I'm not so sure that there's a quote at 1:18. I 've heard that little slide into the next chorus by many an improviser in the bebop language. Not sure.
Wardell would have never "been scared" he was a force within himself.
He was in the Earl Hines band shortly after Bird and Diz left, and recorded with Charlie Parker in L.A. in '47 on Dial.
The irony is that Wardell and Yard both left the planet in 1955. Parker in March
Golden Age of Jazz. So many great jazz musicians. All of them Irreplaceable. Don't believe we will ever see the likes of these guys again. They were so good nobody can even equal them let alone be better. But at least they live on thanks to youtube and all the great people like you who share these great videos and this great music of the past. Thank you.
what natural talent, as buzzed as they were, no one could
touch
them then and now

I'm just curious about who the bass player may have been.
Gray was very young then and must have been scared about playing with Parker.
Who wouldn't have been.

@avril2 Wardell was a year younger than Bird. It sounds to me
like they were both intoxicated and each solo *starts out* a little
shaky until the blood gets moving and their minds are focused
into the improv. At first Bird sounds a little drugged, and then he
picks up steam after a few bars and proceeds to lift the bandstand [as usual].
