SI FUE VERDAD QUE CALLAS FUE UN REGALO DE DIOS......PERO DIOS DEJO UN AS EN LA MANGA.......Y ESA FUE JOAN SUTHERLAND....LA SORPRESA DE DIOS PARA PONER LA FIRMA DEL UNIVERSO.
This scene really shows the range of emotions and feelings that he character Norma has.. and Callas is so totally believable .. She worked in subsequent years to polish this role and this scene .. and she succeeded too! Serafin taught he a lot about Norma.
@kgarmaker123 I counted at least 8 glottal sounds in the first two minutes. As I said before this is bel canto and glottal attack is one of the many ornamentations in bel canto.
@sezgin86 1. These are not 'gencer" like glottals.. they are just clean atacks.. there is no hiccup.. 2. This portrayal was polished with age... You cannot compare Callas to Gencer and CAballe, who are hiccuping all over the stage and calling it "art/"
This makes me wanna have a time machine to visit all Mexico City performances of her. I do not know what great opportunity hat that people, who was at this live performances. Simple amazing.
It never ceases to amaze me,just how intrinsically infused with music Maria was!!I mean yes,of COURSE she had to work like a dog to gain complete mastery of her instrument...but my God...what dividends that work paid off with!!i have tried (Lord KNOWS how i've tried!!) to 'get into' other sopranos over the decades, but i am,without exception always left UNsatisfied in some way/shape or form, with whomever it is that i have tried to 'get to grips' with!!Only Callas will suffice, only La Divina!!

Ok. This is technically perfect. Her legato is FLAWLESS in this performance.
The young Callas was an unstoppable force of nature

Maria's superb and unequalled delivery of this scene leaves little room to comment the also exciting and moving performance of Kurt Baum, JRT

If one wishes to understand the inner-
workings of an operatic character....
listen to Callas. Her portrayals may
not always come in a palatable, slick,
pretty package tied with the bow, but
they are honest, contain the high truth
of feeling, and are iconic and un-
forgettable. Thank you for posting
one of Callas' many gifts to the operatic
world!

Technically, yglofmi, if this was before december, she was 26 (:-)
LazarNewDeal 2 years ago
She was only 27 years old in 1950. It's amazing what she could do so young.

Poderosa y descarada, ¡que voz perdió la humanidad! Los dioses se aburrian y se llevaron consigo su voz...

Estamos completamente de acuerdo. Qué otra voz nos hablará de las cosas que sólo María Callas podía expresar?
