The movie appearendly like most already said, were based on DB not DBZ. The original DB was suppost to be a parody of "Journey to the west" but became a series on its own with great fights and hilarious scenes. It's not even the Piccolo Jr. saga really... there's no tournament and the reason there's no characters is because the movie is barely over an hour.
