Bryn Terfel is as amazing to watch as to listen to. So expressive. And he makes it look so easy even though you can see the beads of sweat on his forehead. What a stunning performer.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I've never seen this concert till I stumbled on it here.
Don't get me wrong, I think he is fantastic. But, he does something weird. Whenever he closes to verbalize an "n" sound he makes an "m" sound like he is chewing the word like food.
An earlier post commented about Giovanni's promiscuity asking if it maybe should be Don Juan...Giovanni is Italian for John, Juan is Spanish for John. Moot point.
@asderso Hey now, he's a family man and a Welsh patriot. Even though he plays the part of a seducer and a rapist of the upper class, he's not like that in real life. I hear Lady Gaga is celibate, too. Who'd have thought?
@hymnofashes...... it's very important to read PEOPLE behind their masks, BRYN is a Scorpio so even married or becoming a monk in a monastery far away from sex HE will always wait and dream for" the kill" and I mean sexual escapades. Scorpios - very hidden, competitive and sexual ardent MEN, but you got to read behind the Mask.
@asderso Almost all powerful men are like this. Being a family man doesn't mean you have a gentle and monogamous nature, it means you have self-control. You can't judge people by what they think about doing but don't. There's enough actual betrayal to worry about without second-guessing people. The philanderer never realyl gets away with it in the long run, so there's not much point in being suspicious. Just maintain objectivity and it becomes obvious.
This man has an incredible voice but a totally lacking sense of humor in the voice itself. He is immote, he is always controlled, definitely out of the "Italianity" of the character. Furlanetto with Karajan, in Salzburg? Bloody hell, the best of the Lot (also because the Wizard is on the podium)
he was a good Don not a great Don ( the Georg Solti recording) is not his finest. He does the Catalogue aria on his Metropolitan Opera recital disc, which also has French arias and Wagner from early 1990's - his performances not the Wagner arias!! Anyway, Samuel Ramey with Vienna Philharmoic (Abbado?) is amazing as is Richard Van Allan with Royal Opera House orchestra with Sir Colin Davis. Furlanetto is a bit monotonus, I think. Terfel version is lovely with extra high note!
I can kind of see your point, though one could argue that the role itself is iconic. Then there is of course the death scene, but that does involve three people so I guess that may not count. . .
Bryn, not Bryan :p Bryn is Welsh for 'hill' if anyone cares :) Pronounced 'brin'. Come to that, in Welsh Terfel is pronounced 'Tervel'. Ok, lesson over, sorry :)
By the way.. He says.. But in spain 1003... Women that is:) He is talking to donna elvira how many women Don giovanni has slept with all over the world..
Bryn is singing Leporello's aria in which he's talking about how many lovers his master (Don Giovanni) has had. He says 640 in Italy, 231 in Germany, 100 in France, 91 in Turkey but in SPAIN, he's had 1003. So, yeah. Giovanni's a manwhore. XD
Hi, jeanpcollins, I'm sure you didn't write it like that on purpose but it's actually Don Giovanni. I don't mean to be rude, just helpful....By the way great videos!
I think 'ma' would make more sense, since he's contrasting Don Giovanni's desire to seduce the old women solely to place them on the list with his passion for virgins, notwithstanding the existence of the list.
Here he says "ma passion predominante.." .. in italian the meaning is acceptable in both ways and is very similar "ma passion predominante / sua passion predominante".. in the 1st case the meaning is like "but his greatest passion.." (the "his" is somehow implied) .. the 2nd is only "His greatest passion". In fact I agree with hymnofashes that "ma passion predominante" sound better in italian also if the meaning would be almost the same.. (I apologize for my english,I am italian) ^^
Some songs (I'll post the particular ones later) were actually heart-wrenching.
Oh! At the end I hollered demands from the second loge for "Madamina, Il Catalogo e questo," but he declined the various hecklers saying he'd no Mozart prepared. He did sing a few encores, though.
Sounds like an experience to remember forever. I'd love to know which ones were so heart-wrenching. Bryn can convey so much emotion in his voice - part of his magic.
I was really impressed with his power. When he wants to, he can fill up an entire opera house with really awesome sound. But he can also sing very softly and beautifully. Really, I would have liked to see him in an opera because then he'd be acting, and if I were British I would've enjoyed the ethnic songs more, but his singing was nevertheless fantastic.
So he sang a lot of English songs first. I liked the sea shanties best. Then some Schubert, and then Faure, and a couple arias. He's a great actor, and very funny! He told us some anecdotes, one about how one of his friends accidentally broke the wax seal on an original Mozart score revealing a hair. (Get the DNA! We'll have little Wolfgangs running all about London!) He had us all stand and sing Molly Malone at the end. (A cheap trick to get a standing ovation.)
love it. love love love it. he gets it: these words MEAN something, and they're meant to be played with jsut as he does! just another example of how opera isn't stuffy.
And he can just stand there in white tie in front of an audience and create the whole character and situation and everything. God bless him.

Always seems odd to me when someone who is known for doing a good Don ends up performing as leporello. Seems like kind of a downgrade. . .
Polytes1 2 years ago
Although you have to admit, that Leporello is a better role to play. Don Giovanni doesn't really have anything iconic.
