Some seem to overlook here that all romance characters in Mass Effect 1 are actually straight (which means, they pursue relationships with people they could have children with). As Liara is an Asari, she does not care for gender, that's all. ME2 would have needed more fairness, though.

I personally dont like male-male romance for any male Shepard i may create. That is just my opinion only and should only be taken as much. Female-female romance is inexplicably, universally accepted in today's society (though not 100% of course, but far beyond male-male romance). Personally, i have to agree with BW removing male-male romance option purely on the grounds that its just not a good marketing choice in today's society. Perhaps in 50 years time yes, but not now - not yet anyway.

it's always interesting just how much dialogue they record for the games. they seem to record for every possible scenario. in mass effect 2 every character had dialogue for all portions of the game because they weren't sure of what order they were going to put their recruitment missions in. and they record gay dialogue sections as well, because they're not certain whether or not they're going to give a gay romance option.
