Never buy a used motor from Engine and Transmission World. Do your research; google "Engine and Transmission World reviews complaints scam". You'll see why I am telling you this.
In changing my scooter valve springs, I pushed a nylon rope into the spark plug hole until the cylinder was so full of rope, the valves stayed put. I couldn't find a valve compressor that would work with the engine in the frame so I designed a tool and built a tool for the job. Worked great.
I'm not a mechanic but necessity is the mother of invention.
or you can use the engine itself to do the work for you. i use the piston to hold the valves up. what if you lose air pressure somehow? you have to remove the spark plug to put that fitting in there anyway so why not just put a ratchet and socket on the alternator nut and turn the engine over until the piston is up? works great for me and i don't need to hold my breath while i hope the valves stay closed with air pressure. hell, i can leave the springs off and come back tomorrow if i want to.
In my Hyundai Accent as long as the pistons are up the valves will not fall inside. because the space between the valves and pistons is only about 1/4 of an inch so I don't need any pressure in the cylinders :)
@DanielRemains opps :P, well at least you learnt two things, one you have an interference engine and two you need to change the belt at a certain time :P, I had mine go on a 1997 cavaliere, it said change at 100K km, it went at 112K, no issues just didnt run. non interference engine
@madman1124 Yeah well I bought it at around 200,000kms and I checked every single thing on it before buying it except that damn belt LOL oh well lesson learned!
Well Snap-On or Craftsman may make those valve spring pullers. Ya should see if they do, if they do make them, they will probably be way better quality. Haha nice video man! I don't know when I will have to change valve springs but I will keep this in mind!
Ive never trusted hose clamps to do this for me, as a mechanic dealing with other peoples money i spent a little time drilling through a spark plug, weld a piece of pipe on top of it, air tight, and a quick fitting on the end, and a matching quick fitting on the end of the air hose from compressor, this has never ever failed for me but i heard of a shop that used a compression tester, cut the hose and eventually after a few jobs the hose clamp gave way and the pressure pushedthe hose off, bummer
@saebbi yes thats the best way to do it cheap, time wasnt on my side, plus i make my videos so anyone can learn how to do it, most prople dont have welders at home.
nice video tho.. i am replacing my valve seals where can i buy tha clamp

new valve seals are a must when you have springs off, especially on gm engines. why would you not replace them?
schrankm 7 months ago
i got a cheap "craftsman" compressor. it works great right from the package.

You forgot to mention that the engine should not be running whilst doing this spring transplant.

Why didn't you replace the stem seals at the same time? They're cheap, and might as well replace them while you're at it.

@DanielRemains only issue with those engines, if the timing chain/belt does bye bye valves :D
madman1124 9 months ago
@madman1124 Yeah well I am one of the unlucky ones who had to change their heads after the timing belt broke LOL
