By writing the memoirs Speer was seeking to be accepted back into mainstream German society, he even hoped the German government would find a position for him so do not take everything he says in those books as absolute fact. Read the 1984 book by German historian Matthias Schmidt called Albert Speer: End of A Myth, he investigated Speer's claims and found many lies. Speer even wanted to be Hitler's successor instead of Goering.

actually Hitler was a completely inept tactician and weapons designer. the STG 44 was a rifle so far ahead of it's time and so well designed that had it been issued upon its creation it actually could have turned the tide of many of the battles fought by foot soldiers later in the war. he refused to allow its issue and his generals had to risk execution by ordering and issuing them anyway. Also, opening up a 2-front war with RUSSIA was the biggest blunder in military history!

The army was COMPLETELY unprepared for both the terrain and weather, they over-stretched their supply lines trying to keep up w/ hitler's demands and didn't have enough troops to defend even a properly done supply line from the Soviet Army and from Partisans in the area. @womblewandering He failed to put enough effort into the new bombers being developed that could safely attack Britain and even bomb the US, he diverted troop transports desperately needed so he could kill more jews. he used unreliable slave labor on one of the most sophisticated weapons of the war (V2), he placed wholly unrealistic faith in the SS.
