All very nice, but i believe they still get i wrong.

The project based approach i brilliant and very good, but we still need to get rid of the teacher, we need to get students to teach themselves and each other, with personalized tools.

And for the record, laptops are obsolete, tablets and MS Surface offer way more possibilities!!

But every step forward is at least a step.

It wasn't just the laptops given to the students that caused success. They were already chosen for being motivated students in the first place in the original area schools. Who would give laptops to students who do not prove themselves in the school they attend?

i have to say that the principal's statement that laptops are the key to learning is very naive and somewhat ignorant. the key to learning is a desire for knowledge, which comes from within. giving a $1500 laptop to an unmotivated student doesn't automatically turn them into a curious, engaged student.

You have stated is true.

But laptops that allow interactive learning and provide access to videos and other tools can motivate students more than sitting in a class all day with a teacher who may care but then may not.

Laptops are not the silver bullet but they are a massive help no doubt. Laptop will eventually become as cheap as books.

I do believe that books are still important as they are a physical item comparable to lab tools.

I understand your point. One thing I think we can both agree upon is that the main key to a student's success is hiring and keeping effective, intelligent teachers who care about their students. If we can achieve this, then I believe students would have the chance to a great future whether they come from wealthy areas with tons of technological devices, or from low-income areas with few resources.

The only thing that needs to be done with modern schools is use Linux computers along with Windows and Apple. Poorer schools can save money for other necessities, and students could develop more computer skills and know that they have a choice in what software they use.

$1500 laptops! First of all, hope thats on loan. Secondly, in the UK the gov't gives disadvantaged children free netbooks (on a year loan) in certain years of secondary schools(Some schools give to years 7 and 8, some schools more logically give the netbooks to GCSE students)

A typical netbook on wholesale school purchase should cost around a maximum of $200

Im typing on a $525(bought by myself) refurbished laptop. Netbooks cost around £300 or $450 for a good one, which is a far better use of money

@waqasahmed939 No thats not true with the large amount of graphics we use everyday to run different programs we need expensive fast laptops like Macs. They give us the white unibody macbooks which are very good fast and ultra portable, they only cost $999. Im typing on a $1500 laptop i have a macbook pro 13 inch and i think its worth every bit of the $1500. Netbooks are good for going on the internet and email not really anything else. In our school we run extensive programs like autocad.

The school could then get some non Apple stuff then. There is no need to get Apple really. We ran Adobe CS3 Master collection in our school, as well as some CAD software(like autocad) and there was no need to work on an Apple machine.

Moores Law will end in about 20 years or so, maybe less, so MS is really full of bull. Chips these days are so compact that within 20 years or so, the compression process will be so damn small, that we would not be able to make micro chips anymore. At the moment there are over 1 billion strands per chip, thats very tiny. The main prob with chips is that they over heat, the smaller they are. The only alternative to chips is using Protons (Quantum Processors)

The remaining 75% of students are accepted based on where they live. SLA students are completely chosen based on how much they deserve to be there. Also, the racial demographic of SLA's students is the same racial demographic in our city.

SLA handpicks their students after looking at transcripts and going through interviews. All of the qualities of this school that really stand out to me are qualities that are shared with the Science Leadership Academy. SLA has laptops and is project-based. Also, both schools opened in 2006, SLA has had more applicants.
