  • only kirk and Phyllis Newman remain alive. fleeting..

  • @libidooverdrive Lauren's still around! And in the other footage clips, there's George Segal, David McCallum, and Christopher Plummer... and a few more who are still with us!

  • Is this beach house still around? Who owns it now?

  • @evancortez2 I'm sure that it's been razed... people on Malibu today don't live in modest cinder block foundation cottages!

  • @soapbxprod - Ah I see...Ironic isn't it. Back then Malibu had small cozy houses with real legendary movie stars, now it's huge mansions with people who only claim to be so called "movie stars" who aren't even fit to hold Kirk Douglas' shorts:)

  • @evancortez2 Precisely! LOL! :)

  • Thanks for posting these. It's great to see these people in such a relaxed atmosphere. It's all so low key, like a million similar beach parties going on on any given weekend. Beautiful.

  • @ironpirites If you look on our channel page, there are around 75 minutes of clips, and a rough assembly that we have made in order to raise funds to produce a feature length documentary from them and our interviews- hope that you enjoy them!

  • Great film. Love to see these great stars in a relaxed situation. Ben is a cousin of mine and I loved Janice Rule. Great days...great moments...great people.

    Peter G.

  • @MrVapes Hi Peter G.- So cool. I went to a small private elementary school, Emerson, on 96th Street between 5th and Madison in NYC, with at least one of Ben's kids- they were a few years older if I remember correctly- I was 4 or 5. My Grandfather, Abner Biberman, was good friends with Ben. There's a picture of them together with Leslie Nielsen on my Facebook album page, taken right around this time!

    Warmest Regards,

    Luke Sacher

  • I love that ben gazzara is drinking a budweiser, not some imported beer. Only thing more earthy would have been a schlitz or a pabst.

weren't they eating hotdogs too? Not a vegan to be seen.

  • @kabloozie Hot dogs for sure! Paul Newman is drinking Bud too! And there's Almaden screwtop jug wine for Lauren..

  • Loved the video, they seem shy when the camera is on them, but when its time for the real thing the shyness is gone. Paul Newman looks like he`s had some kind of accident due to the cuts on his face

  • @sylviajorgentorolaf Yes! and his hand is in a cast! Motocycle accident- you know what a racing nut he was! just like Steve McQueen- my two IDOLS!@

  • Love seeing Roddy in this one with his face man alongside. Did anyone notice Lauren littering her matchstick? haha

  • @Alandix People used to throw garbage out their car windows! LOL

  • @soapbxprod ....Some places around where I come from, they still do.

  • @daniel213141 Oh god- some people, right? It's mind numbing sometimes! :)

  • Amazing! Thank you for posting these videos; they're a part of history.

  • @ZappaInvents You're most welcome- please pass on- we make a tiny profit on every click! Also watch our fundraising assembly here! Title is:

    Hollywood 1965 Offline Assembly

  • wunderful video´s.. but not sound ...:(

  • @olli7727 No sound in 1965...

  • The clothing back then was so much more simple and tasteful. The colors are as well they fit well too.

  • @MrDennisatthebeach Spot on!

  • wooooow , those are priceless videos, and they also make them seem so close for some reason. thank you soooooooo much for posting this.

  • @sysy007 So are so welcome! We are currently trying to produce a feature length documentary around Roddy's footage- a rough assembly is here on our channel- Title is:

    Hollywood 1965 Offline Assembly

Just search under that title! Hope that you enjoy it.

    Luke Sacher

  • RIP Ben........What a brilliant Actor!

  • RIP Ben and Paul.

  • @seltaebgirl Been a bad year for us movie lovers...

  • RIP, Ben Gazzara. You haqd quite a run while it lasted.

  • @44032 My grandfather Abner Biberman knew him very well...

  • who'd that woman who lifts her legs at 7:15 with the red blouse and white hat?

  • @interstategar found her its Janice Rule

  • @interstategar Dead on! Ben's main squeeze- and he hers!

  • these look like they were shot with 16mm film

  • @interstategar Yes! Kodachrome reversal! The upload is from a U-Matic SP dub from the Digital Betacam Rank Cintel master! The quality of the master, without H.264 compression for YouTube, has to be seen to be believed.

  • What happened to Paul Newman's face and hand, do you think?

  • @SueSnell Motorcycle accident! Think he's talking to Lauren Bacall about shooting Harper... they're probably in pre-production that summer...

  • @soapbxprod - Wow - he's pretty torn up. Could have been much worse, of course (no helmets, most likely.) Yes, Harper - that had fun moments. I wish Shelley Winters were in some of these - love her.

  • @SueSnell Shelly Winters was ultimate!

  • Look! Everyone is talking and interacting and not on their cell phones!!! Time machine, please.

  • @SueSnell Don't forget the Times Crossword! ;)

  • i'm trying to recognise the R and Mr. R couple in this video but i am not having any luck...some hints please ?

  • @miltsar Roddy and Mr. Rosenthal! Ed Rosenthal is standing with Roddy when he holds the Star of David up!

  • @soapbxprod thanx...when I read "Mr. R" I assumed it was an older more influential gent ! ....don't forget, if you guys ever get to Athens the taverna dinner is on me !

  • @miltsar We can't wait! :)!

  • Lauren, is a wonderful and endlessly fascinating to hear being interviewed. Guts and integrity.

She is very respected here in the UK.

  • @TheJohnpandy Lauren and Polly Bergen are the Toughest two broads on the face of the earth! No sexism implied! :)!~

  • @dutchrobbie100 Live a little! It's a free country! Go Lauren go!

  • The couple you told me earlier--right? R. and Mr. R?? Am I correct. Did they live together?

  • @windstorm1000 Yes! And YES! :)!

  • I just love all these H'wood stars helpin themselves to franks, buns, catsup and mustard--plus beer of course. They were probably salivating for this experience again after being cooped up in the studios and phony parties.

  • @windstorm1000 Drink Bud from a can! Ben Gazzara RULES!

  • There is a well known male couple in this video, but I'll let all and sundry figure it out--i just learned this and it added to my enjoyment of the post.

  • @windstorm1000 We want to know! Tell us!

  • Roddy's get togethers--not really parties--were very popular People could just hang out and be themselves--no H'wood BS. I doubt there was even deal making--that was probably frowned on.

  • @windstorm1000 Most of them were working together that summer on various movies- Jane Fonda and James Fox on The Chase with Marlon Brando, Roddy with Anjanette Comer on The Loved one, and Paul Newman and Lauren Bacall on Harper!

  • Is it possible to know exactly what part of malibu this is at?

love to google earth it and see it now.

  • @GregorHo Yes! It's known as the Malibu Colony! Hope that helps!

  • why is becall kissing douglas?? was she married at this time??

  • @TheRehanSeerat Yes- to Jason Robards, from 1961 to 69. He also appears in many of Roddy's films posted here on our channel.

  • @TheRehanSeerat Why? They were and still are good friends, ever since they worked together on "Young Man with a Horn" in 1950.

  • Love watching Lauren Bacall, Seen her in almost all of these videos... She never missed one of these parties..... She's not a bit shy when the Camera is on her.... She's fascinating to watch...

  • @happels She and Roddy were very close friends!

  • @happels She's a pistol! No wonder Bogey loved her so much...

  • Notice there is no paparazzi snapping hundreds of photos at them.... Life was so grand! They were the biggest movie stars of that era... Today there would be loud helicopters overhead taking pictures too..

  • @happels And eating hot dogs, drinking jug wine, and doing crossword puzzles!

  • Notice how no one cares that they're being filmed. Cause no one was going to post it on facebook 5 minutes later!

  • @Kay2be2M Exactly- 45 years seem the right amount to time to wait!

  • Has anyone noticed how the fashion back then doesn't look strange almost contemporary..70's and 80's would look more off compared to this., like lot of the stripe shirts are back in style now. That guy with the stripe shirt and tight jeans and the hair do on him is just like most guys I see on the streets today. Fashion recycles

  • @TubeIwatched Totally! The classics are always the best!

  • @TubeIwatched - I think that's a young Dennis Hopper in the stripped shirt you speak of so fondly... ;) Yeah, classic times and proper fashion from the cool set. Love Roddy !

  • @TubeIwatched You are so right. I've often thought that myself; especially regarding the 70's. The fashions were very unique in that decade for the most part. I loved looking at all the fabulous clothes and vivid colors here. Great watching.

  • @TubeIwatched I was just going to say.

  • these videos are fantastic

  • @paristiger1 Glad you are enjoying them!

  • Gold

  • @DRSeussization Thank you dear Doctor! Please look at our channel- soapbxprod- you will find more!

  • These truly are amazing.... I've been looking at your channel for several days now, and the archives you have are nothing short of astounding.... Thank You!

  • @thumper6988 You are SO SWEET! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! More fun stuff being uploaded today- newsrells, unique Dean and Jerry, and vintage Hollywood and Las Vegas!

  • Absolutely priceless memories of so many legends! I feel, watching these, like I've gone to heaven.

  • @edwardjames50 You are TOO kind! You warm our hearts!

  • IM DYING THIS IS AWESOME

  • @meloveicecream24 That's the best news we could imagine! Thank you again!

  • Lauren Bacall looks like she'd be so fun. And all those screen beauties with almost no make-up. They are stunning. It is so funny to watch them mouth, "turn off the fuckin' camera" or the like. Thank God he didn't. Roddy left us a treasure. Thanks so much for posting these.

  • @DorianDevereaux You are so welcome- glad that you are enjoying the clips! Please recommend them to your friends! we're hoping to make a feature length doc using this footage- there is a "rough" assembly here on our channel titled "Hollywood 1965".

  • @DorianDevereaux yeah, she's for real---not a phony bone in her body--God love her.

  • @windstorm1000 Lauren is the Oracle! She and Polly Bergen might be the last two of the Old Guard still standing. Remarkable women!

  • This is my favorite of all the clips, mostly because Janice Rule is in it. Pointing her toes for the camera! Had a crush on her since I was 14 when she appeared in a "Fugitive" episode on 4/4/1967 entitled "The Walls Of Night" as David Janssen's love interest. She was so cool.

  • @tommystx Glad that you enjoyed it- she and Ben were quite a team!

  • If this were filmed today everyone would be preoccupied with ther cell phones and ipads and it just would't be the same.

  • @tommystx It's so true! David O. Selznick appears to be the only soul there obsessed with anything... and it's the New York Times crossword puzzle! LOL!

  • Does anyone know what happened to Paul Newman-his face was cut and hand bandaged? Love him inside and out! :)

  • @244rjs Motorcycle accident! He raced everything!

  • @soapbxprod Wow! He was fearless! Thank you for responding and posting these home videos. They are something to see - so nostalgic.

  • @244rjs Still can never decide for sure who I want to be when I grow up- Paul, or Steve McQueen! LOL!

  • @soapbxprod LOL! I know what you mean. It is a tough call, but to me Paul Newman was something else!

    Beautiful inside and out :).

  • @soapbxprod I meant to ask you how did you know that Paul Newman was in a motorcycle accident? Please do not misunderstand or take this the wrong way, but I am just curious how you know so much, etc. I see you said Roddy McDowall gave you these movies, but if you don't mind my asking what was your connection to all of this. Again, not questioning or challenging you, just curious.

  • @244rjs Actually someone else here on the comment thread first posted that info- I thought that he had been injured driving a racing car! If you would like to know all about me, just google or iMDB my name- Luke Sacher. I'm the grandson of Abner Biberman and grand nephew of Herbert Biberman- Google them Too! Please look at our channel page- soapbxprod- as well. Our feature length docs are uploaded here! And thank you for your interest- it's MOST SINCERELY welcome! :)!

  • @soapbxprod Now I see that someone else said it. PN did not start car racing until after he made Winning in 1969. I thought maybe he was injured on a set while making a movie. Thanks for your info. Will look all up. Seems you are following in the family footsteps - good for you. Thanks for sharing these videos - it was fun to come across these 'megastars' hanging out. I realize they are people too, but it was cool to see all so casual and low key.

  • @244rjs That's the thing that's so COOL! They're just regular middle class people! Please look at our rough assembly for the feature that we hope to make from the footage- Hollywood 1965- here on our channel! And THANK YOU for your interest!

  • @soapbxprod Thank you for your responses. I will look at your channel. Also looked up your iMDB - you (and your family) have done such interesting work. So you did the Rat Pack Doc, Jerry Lewis Bio, Frontline shows (Frontline is great - I am from Boston and a member of WGBH - so I am partial to them :). So interesting. Thanks for all your openness and sharing. Best of luck!

  • @244rjs Old Blue eyes himself! I LOVED him in Harper!

  • I'm wrong?

  • @sTALGIE60s50s Everyone in Hollywood was, and is, a little bit Jewish! Mentally speaking! Remember the old adage of Lew Wasserman- "Think Yiddish, dress and act British!"

  • Was Roddy Jewish?? It seems that he imitates the monkey when he have the cross david on the head. ;)

  • @sTALGIE60s50s No, Roddy was not Jewish! HA HA! But MANY of his friends were!

  • Oh, dear, wasn't there one of these wonderful videos that showed Tony Perkins at one of the parties?

  • @rbrtptrck YES! There IS! Just look on our channel, soapbxprod, and search under "Anthony Perkins"!

  • @soapbxprod Oh, thank you! I enjoy these so much.I had occasion just once to speak with Mister MacDowell on the phone, and seemed the pertest, most courteous fellow imaginable.

  • @rbrtptrck Our pleasure! Roddy was an exceptional human being- incredible talent, kindness, and charm!

  • Thanks for the information!

  • @brooklynborn81 Don't thank me- thank wendy67mng ! LOL

  • @soapbxprod

    Sorry about that!

  • @brooklynborn81 Boss- I'm sure that it's just fine! wendy67mng will love your thank you!

  • @brooklynborn81 You're welcome ! I am always happy to help.

  • Three of my favorite actors 'shooting the breeze', Newman, Gazzara and Douglas. Is that Joanne Woodward, and Newman's late son with the stripped shirt at the 4:00 mark?

  • @brooklynborn81 It's Paul's late son, but it's not Joanne- think that she might be their au pair? Joanne might have been in NYC. I think that one of the girls is their Daughter Nell. Chris Murray- any ideas on that one? Were you there that day?

  • @brooklynborn81 At 4:00 mark, Paul arrives with son Scott and daughters Susan (with the scarf), Nell and Lissy (the 2 little blonde girls). At 4:17, it's Lissy again posing with a brown-haired girl.

  • @wendy67mng Thank YOU so MUCH! Forgot about SUSAN!

  • @wendy67mng

    Thank you for the information!

  • These are amazing. So clear...could have been taken yesterday...except for the clothing...I love this little "look" into the Golden Age celebrities...to see a side of them that was definitely hidden from the public...thanks for sharing!

  • @ScoobyHubby Thank you! These clips are actually uploaded from U-Matic SP window dubs of the Digital Betacam telecine masters from Roddy's original 16mm Kodachrome film- wait till you see the FEATURE FILM that we're going to make from them!

  • Dear SoapboxProd, I also met Richard Roth..but I never really got to know him.

  • @4thekidsTV Richard Senior- his dad? Or Junior- my best friend? Rich and I are still very close! we admin a Facebook group called Saturday Morning Cartoons of the Mid 20th Century. Come on and join us! You'll have a lot of fun!

  • I was lucky enough to meet Mr.Adolph Green in NYC before he died.

A sweet, kindly and caring gentleman and a talented performer and

    craftsman.

  • @4thekidsTV That's terrific! My oldest friend on the planet, Richard Roth, was childhood friends with Adolph's son- they used to go to Mets games together!

  • The two "Bricks" - Ben Gazzara played Brick in the original Broadway production of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and Paul Newman played him in the movies. I wonder if that's what they are talking about?

  • @44032 It's serendipitous! Calling all lip readers!

  • Your wonderful video moved me: some friends, real life on the beach, no audio.... i could immagine what they say...Thanks a lot from ITALY

  • @ottoraf VIVA ITALIA! We will be hiring a lip reader to decipher the dialog, and then asking all those still living to read their own words to picture! Known as ADR... And... hire voice artists to perform the voices of those who have left us.

  • What's with the massive bandages on Paul Newman's hand and the bruises on his lovely face?

  • @twtape Motorcycle accident!

  • @soapbxprod Oh my! Thanks for that info. I just noticed you were discussing this with some other commenters a few days ago, sorry I missed it before asking.

  • @twtape De rien, de nana, no problemo!

  • Fascinating slice of Americana in the mid 60's- smokin' drinkin', eatin' white bread!

  • @pataphysician66 Drinkin' Busch and Bud out a can! LOL!

  • Huge fan of Roddy McDowall... :) and a lot of the others

  • @ludovica36 Glad you enjoy it! We aim to please! :)!

  • Do you know which beach this was filmed on? It looks just like La Costa.

  • @JBaudition Hello! It's MALIBU, baby!

  • How cool seeing Ben Gazzara and Paul Newman hanging out together. Broadway's original 'Brick Pollitt' and the cinematic MGM 'Brick'. I think Gazzara at the time was doing the tv series "Run for Your Life," which Roddy guest starred in one of the better episodes.

  • @badbeaglepup Man, they were the COOLEST! Run for your Life! Bang on!

  • Lauren Bacall. Can I just be her.

  • @princessjoots You'll have to ask her! LOL!

  • Who's the hunk in the striped shorts with Roddy at 1:40? All of these just make me want to hang out with Betty and Natalie at the beach shack! Brilliant that Roddy gave these to you.

  • @SeparateisntEqual That is Roddy's best friend- his last name is Rosenthal- a gifted cartoonist and artist!

  • @soapbxprod thanks for the info!

  • He had a motorcycle accident.

  • @wendy67mng Hello! I am Luke Sacher, Abner Biberman's grandson. Do you live in LA? Are you in the industry?

  • @soapbxprod Not at all. But I have a large collection which I started in the early sixties. I still have articles mentioning that accident, that's why I know PN was hurt (especially his left hand which needed a graft) in a motorcycle accident. Let me thank you for uploading these videos, I hope you have some more.

  • @wendy67mng We do! Pulling selects like these as we speak! Soon to be a major motion picture!

  • Can anyone tell me how Paul Newman got the black eye and bandaged hand? He shows up with Joanne Woodward and family at 4:01; the bandaged hand is apparent at 6:35 and the black eye at 7:36. Newman would have been working on “Harper” in L. A. at the time (with Lauren Bacall and Robert Wagner). “Harper” (“The Moving Target”) went into production on June 1, 1965.

  • @kmhays64 I can! He was an amateur sports car driver all his life! A little accident...

  • I think the beautiful looking brunette woman in the orange jumper around 6:46 is the actress Janice Rule who was married at the time to Ben Gazzara who is also in the shot as are Paul Newman and Lauren Bacall

  • @KalBackus Good Eyes! Correct Again!

  • Not that MIke Nichols and Elaine May and Rob Wagner and Jack Warden aren't big stars! Robert Wagner narrated our biography of Lana Turner for TCM- it's here on our channel page too.

  • MIke Nichols and Elaine May show up in one of these films as well. Bob Wagner, and Jack Warden, too. I think the guy at 3:19 is Alan Ladd, jr. Great stuff. Thanks for uploading.

  • @nickfortune You know your stars! We couldn't list them all in the description so we only used the really big names! Do you work in the movie/TV business too?

  • i believe john is talking to kirk at 2:20.

i believe he is also the man in the red shorts in the beginning of this one:

Christopher Plummer Sal Mineo Natalie Wood Juliet Mills Malibu 1965

  • @nickfortune Yes! You are most right! When I met him he was so much older, he looked so different! What a great director! Seven Days in May!

  • @nickfortune I'm sure that you're right about that one also!

  • @nickfortune He had just finished The Train with Burt Lancaster in 64, and was in pre-production for Seconds with Rock Hudson!

  • John Frankenheimer as well.

  • @nickfortune The man talking to Kirk Douglas is George Axelrod, who wrote "Paris When it Sizzles." The man in the white boating cap is songwriter Adolph Green. I think that his wife Betty Comden is there too. I met and photographed John Frankenheimer at Janet Leigh's home in 1996 for her Intimate Portrait on Lifetime- where do you see him? BTW- I'm the grandson of actor/director Abner Biberman.

  • Adolph Green was not married to Betty Comden - they were writing partners only.

  • @Mimri9 Sorry- It's Phyllis Newman! OOPS! Thing is, my oldest friend on earth was best friends with Adam Green, Adolph's and Phyllis' son! Sometimer's Disease claims another victim- LOL
