I was listening to multiple videos of yours and diggin' every minute of it! What do you think about the Kessler horns? Good pro horn for the price? I am a college student playing on an intermediate model tenor right now trying to find a good pro model I can afford that plays good.
Wow, Chayjazz, I was tied up here trying to decide between a Kessler Custom (but the plain raw brass w/ clear lacquer) and a barone or something, but shoot, I think I'll just go with that Kessler because that horn sounds good - in the right hands. You can tell you have a concept - you ever check out the interview by Wayne Shorter when asks why horns can't be like Stradavaris? Seems you strive for that. Right on.
@IndelibLee I dig all of these horns, playing a lot on the Kessler now but I'm sure next month I'll be playing one of my others. But to me a horn is just a horn, some may feel better or easier to play than another but it's on the individual to get their sound out of the instrument.. I know that I'm gonna sound like me whether I'm playing my Mark VI or if I'm playing Kessler...(same with mouthpieces).
Added your channel. 40 and started playing two months ago. Where do I find the rhythm changes, would love to start playing them. Great sound and tech.
@oceanrage - there are lots of sources, but one that goes in depth while also starting out slow and made even for beginners - AND includes a CD - is the Aebersold book. He works with pros like Ron Carter, Liebman, etc, used to work with Woody Shaw - so you KNOW them changes are correct. Also, there's a great book called "The Jazz Theory Book" by Mark Levine - it's in-depth stuff for ALL levels, for real, and in there somewhere he's breaks down those changes in particular.
Oakland!! My home town..Sounding killer..By the way this is proof that it's not all in the equipment. This cat blows like this on an Otto Link STM on a Selmer copy. Just awesome
@aeon7000 Kessler is a Chinese horn. I bought it as a back up horn when I was going back and forth between Las Vegas and Oakland. It's a good horn and I'm happy with it.
Thanx Mordling and Darrel122 for listening. Darrel122, I never really worked on any tonguing patterns per se. One thing I know I do is almost alway accent when the phrase changes directions (but that's not a hard and fast rule). I just picked my phrasing up by listening to a lot of cats play. Sometime I feel I articulate a little to much. I'm working on being a little more legato lately. Thanks again for listening.
I thought I got pretty decent finger technique. But look at his fingers, barely moving, effortless mastery! Nice playing man. And darrel122, he is not tounging every note, just the important ones...
Great rendition man! Great technicality! What kind of exercises do you use to get your tongue to get to the speeds you demonstrate? Also what kind of tonguing patters are you using? I'm finding it hard to string quick phrases because my tongue has a hard time keeping up

Oh - and it's tight cuz he explains a good way for your EAR to start to understand by making it easy to navigate using pentatonic only.

Good. The Mark VI is more fluent at Jazz phrasing.
