I found Marc when I fell in love with Tom while listening to Rain Dogs. I'm a guitar player and playing with SOUL and PATIENCE means more to me than flaming licks. He's really great.
I've been thoroughly enjoying all the Cuban songs that Ribot and his bands have performed, but I keep going back to this one. the beat is beautiful and the singing fits the spite romance theme so well it gives Ribot some great opportunities to cut loose and play some screaming blues lines. The humor here by Ribot is greatly appreciated as well.
I'll be listening to this performance for a long while.
@1Delta yeah, Marc is one of my favorite guitarists so i love pretty much everything he does, but the Cuban stuff is always particularly enjoyable. glad you appreciate it, too, and thanks for checking out the vids.
@extplay Hey man, thanx for the reply. yeah, a theater director friend of mine who moved to NY.NY. after college (from Honolulu!) once told me about a guitarist named Marc Ribot. then I heard on the Tom Waits LP Heart Attack and Vine and really hoped he took that mean, barb wire guitar tone and turned it loose. But hearing my wish come true in the context of all this traditional Cuban music is even sweeter.
thanx again for this one especially. that beat and tempo on this one are primo!
@1Delta i love Marc's work with Tom (who's also a favorite). again, if you haven't checked it out already, search youtube for "tom waits big time" (no quotes). you'll see a series of 10 clips from a great live show in the 80s (released on VHS, but not DVD, to my knowledge). Marc's in the band and Tom is amazing.
@1Delta Hehe ribot doesn't play with waits until rain dogs.. I was sure it was ribot on heartattack and vine and swordfishtrombones, but it isn't :S But yeah, I agree with you, this performance and the Aurora en pekin live are just brilliant. So thanks for the post, extplay!!
@colgatesmile123 thanx for the info. I am surprised that it wasn't Ribot on Heart Attack and Vine, just 'cause the tone and the phrasing really sounded like him. but this performance in particular has become my absolute favorite Ribot performance. soulful and gritty, it's a very unusual style of guitar playing, and even though I knew about his Cuban playing, it wasn't until hearing this exact performance that really opened eyes fully to what makes him so special.
@1Delta no problem :) it's kind of funny.. I openned my eyes for ribot after discussing waits with a man in four straight hours at a baptism, and the guy I talked with recommende highly ribots playing on big time... his cuban music is some of his best I think, but i would say Aurora en pekin hit me rigt on spot and I think it's even better than tis performance :O Have you heard his work with bar kokhba? (John Zorn's jewish project)
Egの偉人&奇才Marc Ribotのラテン♪よりの音響‥中~後半に何時も通り破壊的ギター披露! Amazing !
