Fantastic banjo! As for those who are somewhat thrown for a loop by Amidon's vocal stylings, it might help you if you can get your hands on recordings of his younger work, when he was singing with his parents and brother (under the name "The Amidon Family")--there you can hear that he is perfectly capable of singing not only in tune, but pretty conventionally as well. It's obvious that he has decided to go in a different direction now and purposefully stylizes his singing.

I enjoy the simplicity and interest in daniel johnston's character/music. And by mentioning this you must agree that this guy's singing isn't very good. There is much better folk music out there than what this guy is making. He's butchering the song. Sorry I offended his only handful of fans.

Melodic singing does not equal good singing. This sounds great to me, as does his other stuff. It was my fault assuming you were judging off of melodic vocals.

@joejoejoemalin : Many popular vocalists build their career around character and passion rather than pure vocal ability. The popularity of American Idol and other similar shows serve the point. Just because you can sing and hit all the right notes doesn't mean people are going to like you. However, guys like Tom Waits and Thom Yorke are really popular. So with that said, I think Amidon's voice is a welcome change from polished singers who don't have any character.
