I would stay for a while, then find whats left of a gun shop,go to a mall, send a radio wave to tell people where there is shelter, then do the same, just guide survivals to shelter, and explore a bit
Theres about 15 in my town. We have Northrop Grumman and the Ingals shipyard. It's been building naval ships, nuclear subs, aircraft carriers, and destroyers since 1930. Plus we have a huge chemical refinery and Oil rig factory, that would explain the bunkers and old AA guns.
We were probably a target during the cold war and WWII! We probably still are a target! I better get out of here!
i've seen a lot of nicer underground shelters, but would much prefer this one. it has a very nice post apocalyptic feel to it. a library is essential!
@kackleyjarrod No, each 90 degree turn attenuates gamma radiation by a factor of something like 90%. Pretty cool fact, huh??? :) There are three basic factors to surviving a nuclear incident and that's Distance from the source of radiation, Shielding from the radioactive particles, and Time, or the time it takes for the radioactive material to decay to a safe enough level to go outdoors. General school of thought is that two weeks is how long the general population should expect stay sheltered.
Well this is just crazy..kudos for blowing that much money and time. P.S. the assholes outside can lock you in with a padlock or chain lock. Good luck getting out.
This is epic, its like the vaults in fallout 3 but not creepy and weird, I'd gladly spend the apocalypse in this place. I'm gonna spend my inheritance on one of these.
If you did happen to make it to the shelter and survive a massive war, what happens in 5 years after the food runs out? Eventually you'll have to come out. What are you going to eat and how will you survive, assuming that everthing is still contaminated? Chernobyl is still off limits and that was 25 years ago. Better off going to an island in the equator and hope that the radiation would dissapate and prevailing winds would carry it away from you. Warmer weather, less to fight for resources.
@sweetnskippy P.S., I only mention the island in jest, but if you were going to rebuild civilization is Montana really where you'd want to hide out and start over. Not a slight against Montana but c'mon!
@DIELAWN123 I suppose that is true, but I was more concerned with wind flows and how that might carry high altitude radioactive plumes vast distances over hundreds of miles. If you are referring to bio attacks, as far as I know an attack like that would probably be more concentrated over smaller areas.
@pieman97405 Bombs like Hiroshima were measured in the kilotons, the ones that are available today are measured by the megaton. The effects would have to be much worse, especially if a whole bunch of them exploded or full scale war broke out. No doubt nature would clean itself up, but in the mean time who really knows how long that would take and at what cost to the land and live stock. Lets hope we never have to find out.
what if there a huge explosion that pushes all the dirt over your shelter and theres no way to get out so you guys will be basically trapped in there running out of oxygen then sufficating... i rather die but the nuclear explosion
im building one of these, the ony way to fuc up thisis to poisen the well, hydrolic fraquing, hmmmm? i think id have a back up plan fore water also other then that great.
This shelter is pretty awesome, but I am pretty certain that Montana IS a target! lol Just look at the FEMA map of likely targets. Since there are countless missile silos in Montana, it may be one of the first targets! Having said all of that, I'm guessing maybe he meant terrorist target.
@saviorslegacy Don't forget China and splinter terrorist groups as well as a rogue military leader in one of these countries starting a launch on their OWN volition! Near accidental launches happen on a regular basis. I'm building a shelter. I don't see why ANYONE would think that's "weird" in a world like this. However, sadly, many soldiers in my Reserve unit make light of my shelter project. Oh well, my gf and I will be safe when the "Big One" hits.
@xXxRustyxrevengexXx I don't think Russia is a huge threat right now. China is far more of a threat than Russia... even if we are supposedly allies. Look at WW1 and WW2, how many allies became enemies real quick?
@VeryUb3r This shelter was originally built by the Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT) which was a fringe religion that mixed Christianity, New Age mythology and survivalism. Elizabeth Clare Prophet, the church's prophetess ordered these shelters built and had expendable funds from real estate sales and from contributions from her followers. The contributors would get to use the shelter when the war happened. Interest in the shelter died out when she prophesied a nuclear war that never came.
How long would someone have to stay in this place in the event of an actual attack? And how long would it be before one went stark raving mad from cabin fever? Or became a mole person psycho?
Five years of food for every individual? Holy cow!
@ELITEtaylor2000 You know how he started mentioning engineers, for the concrete, and the huge diesel generators... I'd say today your probably talking 500,000 if nothing.
@ELITEtaylor2000 A shelter this size would be in the MILLIONS by today's standards! You can build something smaller but cheaper out of old fuel storage tanks or from corrugated steel pipes. I would check out Utah Shelter Systems' website. Google them. Also, there is the Vivos project (again, google it) where you can buy into a mass shelter like a timeshare kind of thing. I personally want my OWN shelter. I don't want to be sharing it with a bunch of strangers.
@ELITEtaylor2000 Taking the size into consideration, and all the building materials, manpower, and all the permits, I'd say this is at least a million dollars all, but for a correct number, I'd need the plans to accurately calculate this.
