Theres about 15 in my town. We have Northrop Grumman and the Ingals shipyard. It's been building naval ships, nuclear subs, aircraft carriers, and destroyers since 1930. Plus we have a huge chemical refinery and Oil rig factory, that would explain the bunkers and old AA guns.

We were probably a target during the cold war and WWII! We probably still are a target! I better get out of here!

@kackleyjarrod No, each 90 degree turn attenuates gamma radiation by a factor of something like 90%. Pretty cool fact, huh??? :) There are three basic factors to surviving a nuclear incident and that's Distance from the source of radiation, Shielding from the radioactive particles, and Time, or the time it takes for the radioactive material to decay to a safe enough level to go outdoors. General school of thought is that two weeks is how long the general population should expect stay sheltered.

If you did happen to make it to the shelter and survive a massive war, what happens in 5 years after the food runs out? Eventually you'll have to come out. What are you going to eat and how will you survive, assuming that everthing is still contaminated? Chernobyl is still off limits and that was 25 years ago. Better off going to an island in the equator and hope that the radiation would dissapate and prevailing winds would carry it away from you. Warmer weather, less to fight for resources.

@DIELAWN123 I suppose that is true, but I was more concerned with wind flows and how that might carry high altitude radioactive plumes vast distances over hundreds of miles. If you are referring to bio attacks, as far as I know an attack like that would probably be more concentrated over smaller areas.

The effects would have to be much worse, especially if a whole bunch of them exploded or full scale war broke out. No doubt nature would clean itself up, but in the mean time who really knows how long that would take and at what cost to the land and live stock. Lets hope we never have to find out.

Elizabeth Clare Prophet, the church's prophetess ordered these shelters built and had expendable funds from real estate sales and from contributions from her followers. The contributors would get to use the shelter when the war happened. Interest in the shelter died out when she prophesied a nuclear war that never came.

I would check out Utah Shelter Systems' website. Google them. Also, there is the Vivos project (again, google it) where you can buy into a mass shelter like a timeshare kind of thing. I personally want my OWN shelter. I don't want to be sharing it with a bunch of strangers.

Gas powered generators can be problematic in that they require gas, for one...and they also are NOT EMP hardened. If you're going to do generator power for your post nuclear war power, you will need a deasel generator.

This is one of the shelters that Elizabeth Clare Prophet built for her church, the Church Universal Triumphant (CUT). I wouldn't wanna join her church, but I'd love to have a group shelter like that. He also talked about MT not being a target. Balogna! There were HUNDREDS of ICBM fields in MT.

Prophet made a dooms day prediction in like 1989 that didn't come true and then she told her followers that their prayers stopped the nuclear war, when it didn't happen on the day she said it would.
