@relativitee i don't think the cliches and stereotypes are on purpose.ever since T2 all of cameron's movies have all the same positives and negatives,he seems to put all his time, money, and energy into making them look good while everything else suffers
Just like my comment on your D-9 review.Thats still the only movie that showed the true power of the Mecha.People getting crushed blood everywhere people being turned into mist.I mean come on metal comes in contact with flesh. It's not going to be good out come.Just like Transformers the only people I want to see are people running from robots or people that didn't run fast enough!rofl Not some girls ass.I mean 10-20 story tall 25 ton robots and no one gets crushed LOL.
Intelligent review and I agree pretty much with what you said, this movie was a silly fantasy film trying to masquerade as serious SF and using some of the most embarrassingly lazy plot devices to do so. The military force of 150 years into the future are also seemingly less effective than the military of today and the climax resorted to the cheapest of plot devices to finally turn the tables.
District 9 was great SF, so was Moon but Avatar is throwaway trash, remarkable only for the effects.
The main villan ran out of bullets...? So he took out his knife out? err..... kids movie... you talk and sound like one :/ just because its not a love story....don't hate fantasy? influencial on my life........ go study a religion or smthing :S
if it's simple in its complexity or complex in it's simplicity, then that's the genius of the movie itself..
they emotional part by the character's might have suffered because there was no time to dwell on them. nature was 1st priority. Pandora was the main character.
but the acting were spot on. people are too used to bad acting that they become cynical when they see a real acting.
Quit watching bad acting. Look and observe people around you. Watch the movie again you'll be less cynical
well this year! my only fave movie was gran torino, sue liked seeing sume racism n a mov!..last year it was a dream come true to see all this characters back n the big screen again! like rambo4 indiana jones4, ironman the dark night the hulk, and the punisher, jonah hex the movies is coming out i hope they dont start making toys n videos n all that bullshit they always do when a movie cums out!
That "giant knife" wasn't robot's knife. It was Jake's knife. Jake tried to kill the villain (I don't remember his name) with his knife and the knife got stucked into the robot. Then the villain pulled the knive out and tried to kill Jake.
It was the dude in a robot suit. What matters is that he had the technology at his disposal to pummel Jake but he chose to go at him with his own knife, which is even sillier given that the Naavi are supposed to be so resilient in the first place.
One of my life long best friends is full blooded American Indian. Obviously this film somewhat maps onto native peoples experiences in the past. He finds it annoying when natives often need saving and leadership from the one outsider that "goes native" and earns their trust. As if they are incapable of figuring things out for themselves. He said even the Ewoks are better examples. LOL
I got exactly what I expected from this movie. I expected a visual feast and I got it. I never expected an emotional connection. Movies for me are escapism and I don't mind being turned back into a little kid for 3 hours. As for scif fi stories in general...It's getting more and more difficult to surprise anyone. Establish Protagonist/Antagonist...Protagonist does something heroic...only to be broken down...then the big heroic rally at the end...pretty cut and dried...TBC...
Well sure if you want to generalize, thats true. The spectrum of interpretation of that format however is very wide. There are NO new stories. Everything is a reinterpretation. But even so you have movies, within the sci fi genre, like Moon, District 9, The Road based on creating a fresh, original approach. Avatar does have an original approach, just not in terms of narative, like you said, it's a visual feast. Form over function all the way.
Nice review. One of the things I noticed about this movie, was it had some nice political messages. The one that stuck out at me was, protecting the Rainforests. I just want to say in response to the very end of your video, and I think I speak for all. Your welcome. :)
Nightmare before christmas was a great kids movie for me. Good times. I still want to see Avatar just because of the Hype. And can you do a Review on "The Princess and the Frog?" Id like to see what you would think about it.
Unfortunately Princess and The Frog is going to be released in Romania on the 22nd of January and I really want to see it in a theater. So its going to be a while till I get to that one. But I do want to see it really badly, I miss traditional Disney animation.

Of course it was a Rambo style knife.
The jock driving the Robot was acting just like Rambo. What part of the Colonel Quaritch character don't you understand.

Hm... you could be right since I don't remember the exact specifics, but it was still a little silly to see a giant robot (suit) weilding a knife. :)

As I said, it wasn't the Robot who was weilding the knife it was colonel Quaritch.

Oh, I know how he feels. Vlad Tepes anybody? Vlad Tepes who's that?
Dracula...
Oh him! Did he really drink blood?
NO!
But he did impale people?
Yeah but... it's complicated. :)
