I am not understanding this if you are training 1 bird why have the other bird in there? also what is the point of the lovie going through the tunnel? I do not understand this training at all.
This is very insightful, I didn't realize that birds could be trained like this! You might want to consider not training one bird and not the other, the other one looks so very disappointed! =)
That's exactly the point of a "bridge" in animal training-- to mark a point in time when the behavior is complete. After that, the animal knows it's done and a treat is coming for certain. If you don't see this anticipation, the clicker (or other bridge) hasn't been used correctly.
This video is amazing, thank you! I just started training recently with my budgies, and they reacted to the clicker in your video!
Clickers are available at pet stores, usually in the dog section. The book I use, clicker training for birds by Ann Castro, came with a clicker and a target stick.
Maybe I'll try the lazer pointer next.... looks like fun!
I got two lovebirds too and well their very untame and ive had them for 1½ year now. I wonder where I could get a clicker like that, I think my brother has a lazer pen tho. You just totally got me motivated to start training them. Thanks! :D <3 Emppu
These were halfed hulled sunflower seeds. Whole ones or those with shells would increase the time the bird spends eating, slowing the training process. Of course never use the salted human-snack type. Depending on the diet preferences of your bird, the sunflower seed may or may not work; you might try red pepper seed, crushed peanut, broccoli floret etc.
That's a wonderful demonstration of clicker training! Unique that you used the laser pointer! I look forward to future training sessions! And thank you for your comments on our c/t video (Building Trust With Your Bird - One Click At A Time!)
