  • How does eco-earth work for the soil? How many times a week should i mist the enclosure?

  • @jrnero2

you mist the substrate when it's dry..It works exactly the same as you've seen in my videos. You don't need to overly mist brachys

  • @Jon3800 Sorry for my bad grammar in the first message but my first question is actually "Is eco-earth just as good of a substrate as potting soil?"

  • @jrnero2

    yes

  • @Jon3800 I need to find a thermometer

    LOL

  • @Jon3800 Jon is there a way to know if you are allergic to tarantula hairs?

  • @Jack5458

Jack, as with ANY case of allergens...you must be exposed to them first to find out if you're truly allergic to them.

  • Arent you afraid for the hairkicking? I really want a Smithy but I am really afraid of the hair kicking.. Does it hurt when you get the hairs in your skin? Or can I wear some protective gloves and eye/mouth cover or something?

  • @stijnxd

the hair kicking really doesn't bother me all that much unlike those Nhandu hairs. You will feel very itchy, depending if you do react badly to the hairs. If its for handling I don't suggest wearing gloves. Its feet contain tiny claws that act like suction cups, so it can get stuck on the glove if you try to pick up from your hand

  • jon,tnx a lot for the immediete reply i appreciate it. since im still a neophyte, i have many queries, i hope u don't mind ..... i have another question....... do brachypelma vagans have stronger venom than other bracyh species?????

im planning to buy a brachy. albopilosum is it recomended for a begginer like me???

  • @MrGuitarlover98

Why not use new instead of neophyte, I don't understand that term. Like I said in the video ALL brachypelmas are good for beginners...easy to care for. B.emilia is rumored to be the most venom (no worse than a bee sting, although cannot speak from experience never been bitten before). Vagans is the fastest growers, but it is also the most defensive. I wouldn't plan on handling this brach (not that you should handle any on a daily basis).

  • @Jon3800 thanks jon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so is albopilosum good and docile

because im taking one this saturday ...its about 1 inch 1/2 . last question wat is the best feeds, the small roaches or the mealworms????

  • @MrGuitarlover98

both are fine. Follow my feeding videos. It gives you an idea on how to feed them.

  • how do u powerfeed? i have a 1 cm vagans i bought it for 450 pesos in an exotic petshop here in the philippines . i m so curious when its gonna mature...

  • @MrGuitarlover98

You keep feeding the sling more than once a week until it can't take no more. I DO NOT recommend this; very dangerous method of raising them. For one, the abdomens are too oversized which rupturing becomes likely, this is fatal if it happens. The only good thing about it, it grows quicker, but you risk cutting their lifespan in half.

B.vagans are fast growing. I had a 2 inch juvenile grew into a 4.5'' mature male in 2 years.

  • @MrGuitarlover98

and to answer your question on tarantulaguy1976's channel 1st/2nd instar means the number of times it molted in it's lifetime. Since your vagans is 1/2 inch; it is likely 2nd instar.

  • do you need to pick it up like how you did or can you gentle push it to your hand?

cause im afraid i might accidentally squish the tarantula hahaha lol

  • @jejeboy11

both will work...if you're not comfortable with pinch grab method, don't use it. And use a paintbrush never your hand when you're making the initial contact. Tarantulas can bite including the most docile species

  • @Jon3800 What if my tarantula is a mexican red knee tarantula they dont bite anyway

  • im getting a mexican red knee i was jw how much should i feed her every week? and would eco earth work for the substrate?

  • @mydickowns

once a week is fine. If you follow the many feeding videos I have, those are my live feeding schedule. Yes, this substrate is my top choice.

  • @Jon3800 how many crickets at a time should i give her? and what do u think the average price for a red knee be

  • @mydickowns

The 2-3 a week are crickets i forgot to mention. But ya, watch that updated video. It gives you more information than you need to know about B.smithi

  • @Jon3800 thanks and it looks like you got your account back haha

  • @mydickowns

It highly depends on how big you're getting it...if it's a sling 1 a week is enough, if it's an adult 2-3 once a week is good. Like I said, watching the feeding videos help, because it shows you how often I feed mine, and and what kind of prey I'm using given it's size.

Once again, it highly depends on how big you're getting it. Slings range $25-60, adult females are $200.

    watch?v=VJxRxf8goIU

This is an updated video on the mexican red knee. This tells everything you need.

  • As always, another great vid. A Question? I've got a B. smithi female thats thirteen. her last two molts have ended with the carapace not coming off. Both times I waited 24 hours then picked her up in a thumb forefinger pinch and removed the carapace carefuly with blunt ended tweezers. She's been fine after each time. Is this from age? I keep her humidity around 65% and the temp 78* day, 70* night.

  • @xH2S8x

    possibly from age.

  • my curly... 2.25''... is as vissious as a t.blondi, my LP is calmer than him... i think its just a different spidernality lol (personality of a spider lol)

  • thanks man

  • Do you measure the leg's from abdomen out or from tip of one leg to the tip of the other?

  • @joelolly

tip of hind leg to tip of front leg

  • Love your smithi..

    I have 1 but still 3".

Cant wait till she grow to adult..

  • I have a B. Vegan sling 3/4" and it's turned completely black now. 3 weeks since I've got it, and it was tannish. Now it's completely black. Very interesting to see it change colors.

  • what about humidity levels for the B.emilia?

  • @earlofchaos1991

same humidity levels specified in the video 75-80%

  • i have a question.. uhm im just curious/wondering why you dont have B. emilia?

  • @darklist

I didn't have one at the time, but I have a 2.5 inch female B.emilia.

  • you make great vids full of know how.

    so question for you..

if you were starting out new what one out of these would you buy and why...

    a Mexican redknee ,

    a Mexican bloodleg,

    a Mexican fireleg,

    a Mexican redleg.

this will help me as I like all four but need to know what is best out of these for a total beginner t keeper.

  • @johnbc62 either B.smithi (red knee) or B.emilia (painted red leg)

  • Oh, wow, your B.smithi is GORGEOUS. You must be very proud.

  • @KoriTamashii

    thanks, she is :)

  • Not you, Jon. heh

  • What a tool that guy was. Spider Pro. Haha.

  • That with the *many Substrate*was Ironic.........

  • some species like H.lividum need more substrate than others. If you put them on thin layers, they will become stressed and die.

Don't listen to what pet stores tell you, they know nothing about keeping them

  • Then i ask you why the Ts got so many Subystrate cause they digging.....ans thats never enough.Vermiculit is waste.Kokushumus too.......just to have 100 Ts from somewhere out of the Net didnt mean to be the Spider Pro.

  • it appears you need to be educated...

I would occur to you that tarantulas naturally burrow in the wild, they burrow to avoid predators and to cool themselves on hot days.

You need ample substrate, what happens when a tarantula falls from a high distance? The abdomen ruptures and your tarantula dies a slow and painful death. Putting more substrate pads falls. I'd rather spend $8 more on substrate to ensure my T's safety.

  • It doesn't matter if I own 25 Ts or even 1000 Ts. I'm not a Spider Pro, never was never will be, I'm more experienced.

I have owned tarantulas and cared for 15-16 years. If you say I really suck at keeping Ts, why won't you show me in a video?

  • Ye i know the temperatur is ok, its the slight wind at the terra im worried about. Its not much, and its a soft and hot breeze, but still.. The air might sirculate trough the terra a bit faster than usuall ( like if you open a door in each end of your house, you will Get that"blow trough effekt) im just wondering if that might harm my T's in any way?

  • hmm, I would try to move it just slightly away from the wind, because it can upset her

  • hi, i have a heating pump to heat upp my livingroom. i keep some T`s there and i have discoverd that if i hold my hand against the wall i can slightly feel a light warm "wind" against the terra. its not cool air, but worm(aprox 25-27C) so i was wondering if that is bad for my T`s? i have glass treeas with air filters in the font and topp.

  • thats an okay temp. I keep my Ts between that temp

  • My T's allow me to use more than 2 fingers for pinch grabbing. I can actually grasp their whole body in my hand. I only use this method it the enclosure is too small for my hand to fit so the T can just crawl up it, or if the cage is located higher off the flloor. Using 2 fingers makes me feel like Im going to drop them. My female smithi has a big abdomen at her size of 6.5", so I don't like it sagging down. I have been holding her this way for years.

  • if u have a firm grip you should have no problem. I personally don't like the pinch grabbing method, it's risky for the T. Even cupping...some Ts hate that and bite in defense

  • Yeah, I use a firm but gentle grip, so long as they don't feel threatened, they just relax. Cupping, I only use for the highly venomous H. macs, psychotic OBT, and haplos, which I no longer have. My Regalis, singapore, definatley, and Robc's former A. seemani may require the cup. He said she is kinda evil like a P. murinus.

  • My Albopilosum is very very calm, sometimes he would flick hairs, but they don't really bother me I don't feel them.

  • how long u feed them once???

    and wat do they eat??

  • I give crickets to them every week or so

  • if u want a smithi just look around i got mine for about £70 which is about $120- $130 and spiderlings are about £7 - £20 depending where you look and what sex they are

  • your smithi is beautiful nice pinch grab not attempted yet dont wanna hurt her how old is she ?

  • 3 years

  • What is one of the best ways to treat urticating hairs.

  • I usually take a shower

  • i tend to get tape thats fairly wider than normal household tape and apply to araes of aggravation and pull off nd that seems to help me just a thought might not work for you or might dont hold me to it

  • Put some duck tape on the spot where the hairs are and then remove it in a quick motion.

  • Yeah I've heard Rob C say "you can't make one of these bite.." lol. I guess it's just getting used to their movements, am I best to just coax her onto my hand? She's around 4 inches

  • yup :)

  • I'm itching to handle my B Emilia but I'm pretty scared because she moves so quick, lol..

  • just take it slowly and u'll do fine. They're skittish but they're definetly handeable.

  • What soil do you recommend for a B. Vagans? I'm going to be buying a tarantula for the first time.

  • potting soil

  • Comment removed

  • As long as u got a lot of substrate to break falls, its good

  • Are you suggesting I should use a lot of soil? I won't use any plants for it to climb. Or should I just return it and buy a medium sized one? The one I bought is L x 8.625" W x9.625", what size do you suggest?

  • Well, you don't your T to injure him/herself when he/she climbs because that's what they do at night. If u have about 3 inches of potting soil that should be fine. I keep my vagans in an oversize deli container

  • are those tanks 5 gallons u keep them in?

  • the smaller glass tanks are 5 gallon, and the fireleg is in a 10 gallon. But they can kept fine in a kritter keeper

  • men i like your videos on how to take care ts, do you have any site that we can reach you if we have little problem on our pets. im a novice on the hobby, but im addicted already.. hehe god bless

  • you can contact me thru youtube.

  • T_T

it was getting a lot bigger. i could even pinch-grab it.

i'll get another one. probably a juvy if i can afford it. something bigger so my niece would be scared to go near it.

red knees are pretty hard to come by here. plus all tarantulas here are like $35 u.s. for a 1 inch sling.

we got local ones here though. but i WILL NOT get an old world species.

in due time, when im ready. i will get another T and get all the T species i like. i want to be a collector.

    not giving up!

  • dang it! my smithi just died. correction (MURDERED) my 1year old niece poured out the enclosure. it was an ugly sight!

i almost cried when i saw it on the floor, abdomen bursted and it was shaking (rigor mortis).

it was getting a lot bigger after the molt 4 days ago.

    T_T

dang, i'll just get another one when i can afford another one. they're pretty expensive here.

    T_T

  • oh no how terrible

  • you've got the best T videos on here.

    I LOVE YOUR PSYCHO ROSEA!

  • lol, thanks man :)

  • thanks for adding me to your facebook.

its mr. newbie to T's by the way. i only got one 1in b. smithi.

  • no probs :)

  • thanx jon man.ur awesome.

  • ur welcome

  • jon im back it your best friend jasperapps this my new accunt

  • did your account get hacked ?

  • Is the African potting soil clean and free of fertilizer? Do you use a special brand? Why do you change the mix depending on the season?

  • Yes, you can buy use any type of potting soil as long as its inorganic or pesticide free. I mix it with vermiculite since the plant additive works wonders for keeping the humidity up for species like the ephebopus, megaphobema and theraphosa

  • redknee's okay, my fireleg's a witch

  • In the next week or so I will be getting b.vagans and A.geniculata. What is vagans temperement like?

  • skittish to aggressive
