My grandfather, JUAN L. MONREAL, was a WORLD WAR II Veteran. He was a brave Filipino soldier. He survived the Death March at Bataan. He is now 95 years old. My grandfather is kinda weak already. He became the cook for the Japs because he knows how to cook but he never have forgotten his fellow soldiers who are in prison. He gives them food every night while the Japs are asleep. True hero..We will not forget his bravery and he will be a part of our country's history, forever...
It was said here in the documentary that US oppose Japanese invasion of Philippines and thank you for that but it can really make a Filipino's blood heat up at the thought that this foreign country has the nerve to invade and try to own our country for themselves!!! Through out history Philippines had always been the kind of country that got invaded, abused and maltreated all for selfish reasons! Our ancestors are really HEROES because they fought for what we have and enjoy today - INDEPENDENCE!
@lunafringe10 If you check your history, you will find out that Japan wanted the natural resources of other Asian countries that are not located in Japan. If you think the war started because of the US, check your facts. Japan realized the only true threat to their conquest of Asia and obtaining all of the natural resources throughout Asia was the US. Japan did not at that time and still does not today, possess sufficient natural resources for its industrial base.
The U.S. was totally unprepared for the war in every way. It is sad that these Gallant heroic men who fought and held off the Japanese were abandoned. But many people don't realize the US Pacific Naval fleet was almost totally destroyed at Pearl Harbor, They did not have enough ships to reinforce or supply Bataan, I lost two uncles there. US forces lost about 40.000 killed to fight there way back to Philippines, and 16000 killed in Philippines invasion to remove the Japs,
If the US had been prepared it would have been a different story.
The fighting done by the Filipinos to defend their land is something to be remembered.

It was a strategic withdrawal by the US because US didn't have enough men or equipment to hold it at that time. Same was true for the Allies. Britain abandoned Singapore for the same reason.
Recall that at this time, the US wouldn't be in a position, militarily, to do much for a while because the US was unprepared.
Many(not all) of those left behind *did* feel the US abandoned them. At the time, the feeling was understandable. I'd feel like that too, if I were there.
My grandfather was an American sailor stationed on drydock "Dewey" when the Japs attacked the Philipines. After the base fell to the Japs was he was ordered to Bataan and later to Corregidor as part of the Naval Battalion. He was captured in early 1942 at Fort Mills. My grandmother was a lieutenant in the Fil-Amer guerillas.Through the efforts of Randy Cunningham and Duncan Hunter she was awarded the Bronze Star for her actions during the war.She did not feel that the US denied or forgot her.
You were the one who initiated this argument with me and you were the one to start with the insults by calling me a troll. You were the troll calling me a troll.
This video and our argument has been about WW2, moron!!!
History clearly shows that the Philippines were not abandoned by the Americans. US troops fought with the Filipinos till the very end. And then sent more troops later to liberate the Philippines from the Japs. THAT is history. Accept it, DickHead! LOL
I just want to give my hearfelt gratitude to the Filipino people for making me feel at home there, when my Dad was stationed at Clark Air Base, from 1963-1967. Although I too served in the USAF later, I never had the opportunity to return as a military man. However, I WILL NEVER FORGET, how these wonderful Filipino people always greeted me with a smile and always invited me to eat with them...I love you and I thank-you!!
What a heartbreaking story. I spent many years writing veterans who served in the Philippines. My uncle fought there in 1944 and had great love and admiration for the Filipino people.
Yes, it is true that the Japanese government has never apologized or even recognized the atrocities they committed. Once they admit and apologize, old wounds will begin to heal. It is the right thing to do.
....very important to know the history of bataan and the defenders who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country......thanks for posting and making this vids !
go back and read you history, the only reason we lost the Bataan & Corregidor was because Churchill manipulated FDR into withholding supplies from the PI and sent to england. "I HAVE SPOKEN"
we should remember the war has been over for 60+ plus yrs put the hatred away and lets move forward, a Father I never met or knew died in the Philippines after the fall of Bataan, on a POW work detail, Tabias road work detail.
@Vulcan750L THE U.S.ARMY , and what was left of the U.S NAVY, and AIR CORPS, did not abandon the P.I.
THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ABANDONED THE ARMY AND FILIPINO FORCES ON BATAAN,
U NEED TO READ U HISTORY,
just read the comments on this topic, they are filled with hatred, the blame for our defeat in the philippines lies at the feet of FDR and his staff, I have spoken
All of the US military that was stationed in the Philippines at that time remained there. There was no withdraw and no abandonment. Americans armed and trained the Filipino army and fought side by side with them till the very end.
If the US government wanted to abandon the Philippines, they would have withdrawn whatever military forces were there, instead of ordering them to stay and fight.
The US had other priorities, not just the defense of the Philippines.
"The Filipinos did most of the fighting and most of the dying..."
Of course they did! They were defending their country from a Jap invasion. The Americans were the ones that had a choice. The US could have just said, "You want independence? Here you go . . . good luck." . . . and then packed their bags and left.
The Filipino president was naive and stupid enough to think that the Japs were there just because the US was there. He didn't realize they were there to conquer Asia and Pacific.
US forces stayed and fought and died along side the Filipinos and became prisoners of the Japanese, you moron! Only MacArthur and his staff left. There was no reason to sacrifice a high ranking General for no good reason.
MacArthur and the US did not abandon the Philippines. The US troops that were there remained there till the end. Other US forces came later when we were strong enough, fought and died and defeated the Japanese and liberated the Philippines from the Japanese.
You are the one who needs to read your history. You're an ignorant idiot!
Show me where history books contradict anything I said. Show me where it says that the 11,000 US troops were withdrawn from the Philippines in 1942.
If you watch this video series (4/6), you can see that US forces were still fighting after MacArthur and the Filipino President, Manuel Quezon were evacuated. Generals Wainwright and King continued the fight and finally surrendered months later.
I'm not disputing that the Filipinos "did most of the fighting and most of the dying" in the Philippines. Of course they did! They were defending their country from a Jap invasion.
I'm disputing the claim that the US abandoned the Philippines.
You're going to call Obama stupid just because I called called Quezon naive and stupid for his total misreading of Japanese intentions? LOL
By the way, your reading comprehension skills suck. You don't seem to be able to understand what you read. Or are you just an idiot that gets everything wrong?
Did you even ask a question? This is what I mean by you are an IDIOT! You don't make any sense. You can't even put a sentence together.
I don't respect idiots who can't read, or follow an argument, or make any sense. Respect is earned or else it doesn't mean anything. You haven't earned it. You're an immature idiot.
You started this whole thing off by calling me a troll. Talk about respect . . . So this makes you a hypocrite as well. I don't respect that either.
I call your president stupid, so you call my president stupid. I call you an idiot, so you call me an idiot. I call you immature and you call me immature. You have the creativity, reading comprehension skills, intelligence, and the maturity of a 10 year old.
I called you an idiot because I think you are an idiot. Your English sucks. Your reading comprehension sucks. Your logic sucks. You don't make any sense. And you have the intellect and maturity of a 10 year old.
I downgraded you from a 15 year old because most 15 year olds don't parrot insults back and forth like a 10 year old.
Yeah, there is a bunch of guys like you too, idiots calling everybody who argues with them trolls.
And then you call me a hypocrite right after I call you a hypocrite. LOL
You crack me up. You can't stop yourself, can you. You keep mimicking my insults like a 10 yr old. If I call you fat, are you going to call me fat? LOL
The US had already promised to give the Philippines it's full independence, which they made good on in 1946, shortly after WWII. So why bother fighting a bloody war to help save it from the Japanese?
And sure, they wanted to keep the Japanese from turning the PI. Why care about that?
The US cared because we were opposed to Japanese imperialism and conquest of Asia and the Pacific. Japan was an aggressor nation that wanted to take possession of other countries around them.
Try watching through all of the parts before saying such stupid things. People like you put up facts that does not even exist.
The president was forced to declare Philippines as independent, because America left us. Leaving us defending ourselves without them while they were out there helping their allies up in Europe, which was a total WASTE time. Now, that's a fact.
No, that is not a fact. You need to watch the video again.
The US military never left the Philippines. General MacArthur and his family and staff left because he was ordered to by the president of the US. They didn't want a high ranking general to be captured by the Japanese.
Your president Quezon and his staff also left the Philippines to avoid capture and never returned. He died in exile in the United States in 1944.
At least MacArthur came back with another army to save PI.
Troops stationed in the Philippines never left for Europe. They fought the Japanese until they ran out of food water and ammo, then they surrendered and was taken as prisoners of war. Ever hear of the Bataan Death March?
Watch the video again. Pay attention this time.
General MacArthur remained in the Pacific the entire war as the Supreme Allied Commander of the Pacific.
US troops stationed in the Philippines never left. They fought till supplies ran out and then surrendered.
No help or support at all????
There was no independent Filipino army. Filipinos fought under the leadership of American generals. They were trained, armed, and supplied, and led by the Americans.
But you are right about no reinforcements were sent, except for some supplies that managed to get through the Japanese blockade. But it wasn't enough.
@Vulcan750L I can speak two languages and you can only speak one. Call me a moron huh? say that to my face not here! You can disagree with a persons post, but you have no right to call him whatever you like. First and last reply to this degenerate, I won't stoop to your level...
kakainis talaga ang ganda ganda na ng buhay sa philippines bait kailangan pang guluhin ng mga japanese na yan.... they all created this disaster just to make thier land bigger or territory or watever fuck them!!!!!! uurrrgghhh their so fucking annying!!!! for wat happened to them the hiroshima and nagasaki idk watever!!! goood for themmm they fucking deservess it!!!!!!!!!! they all shoud die!!!!!!!!!
Hey everyone. I am extending my history degree to include the History of Corregidor. I am proud to be in a Fil-Am family & have been to the P.I. four times--once, when my Father was stationed there a decade and a half before I met my georgeous, exotic Asawa (Spouse) . In time, I shall return--oops! I mean, I will return to visit my in-laws. Then, I will volunteer to be a tour-guide in period battle dress or uniform (typically khaki fatigues) on The Rock.If you see me some day,say 'hello."
japs will never admit what their soldiers did.they were far worse than the germans.they are degenerate now. japs having sex with young girls is very common.the americans didnt drop enough A bombs..
Man I could only imagine US soldiers getting stationed in the Philippines thinking it was a glorious island (and personally i LOVE "exotic" women as an American) but man I feel sorry for all these guys who got caught up in this hell on Earth.
I don't know about much of the Philippines history but has their country encountered such a loss in war as the Bataan Death March ? I know many Americans and even more Filipino's died in that campaign and it sucks that it is hardly remembered compared to say Pearl Harbor in deaths.. I commend these soldiers on both sides for having to endure this hell because that's what it was !! I cannot even imaging the hell these guys went through.
i hate my own country but when i watch this video i realized my fellow filipino,,,sacrificed there own lives to protect our land!! THEY PROTECT OUR COUNTRY WITHOUT HESITATION, WITH NO DOUBT!! IM SAYING THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME, EVEN IF IM FILIPINO I HATE MY COUNTRY, BUT IM PROUD NOW TO BE A FILIPINO!! even if my ancestors are spanish and chinese. IM proud to be filipino!!
@bayyagg do muh b alam ngyyri s pilipinas ngaun?? huh?? puro corrupt mga nsa gobyerno !! Who are you? to tell that !! huh you must be out of your mind!! alam kung pinoy k rin !! sna maintndhan muh ako!! proud to be pinoy ako!! dti hndi ngaun oo!!
The wartime PMA classes , together with the ROTC cadets sacrificed their youth in the defense of the Philippines during the tumultous times of WWII. Mabuhay, HUNTERS ROTC!!! We in the Long Gray Line will never forget!!!
The Bataan Death march was not altogether Japanese fault. It is only natural that they didn't get good treatment by Japanese troops. Because USA, Britain, Holland and China began to put economic pressure on Japan. So,Japan had ran out of provision & supplies by it. Many japanese starved by it, including innocent japanese civilians & childrens. even though, Many enemy surrendered to the Japan.
Ur just saying some excuses just to wage war! Before the war, u got China and Korea! Ur people are HUNGRY? for wut? FOOD or POWER for half of the world dominion!
Ur country survived for many centuries w/o any trade from the west!
You are mistaken. Taiwan & Korea merged with Japan, Not Japanese colony. Japan spent a large amount of cost development of Taiwan & Korea. However, Korean don't want to become assailant .So, Korean pretend of victim when Japan lost the war.
You forgot Thailand, that allies himself just to kick those Western imperialist!
Taiwan? Wut are taling about? There is NO TAiWAN during that time! Taiwan became a country after the WAR! Where Gen. Chiang Kai Shek fled from Mao Che Dong's army!
Mr.Charoen Chowprayoon of former Minister of Transport in Thailand who said...
"I know the last one soldier from the first Japanese soldier who has advanced to KhunYuam from whom everyone who returns. A Japanese soldier of KhunYuam lived by working with the villager, and cooperating mutually. It differs
from the Japanese army advertised in the museum in Kanchanaburi. I do not forget a gentle Japanese soldier."
Taiwan under China until 1894. However Japan won the First Sino-Japanese war in 1894. So,Taiwan merged with Japan in 1894~ 1945. Taiwan & Japan were One Country about 50 years. Moreover, Korea merged with Japan in 1910. therefore, Taiwan, Korea and Japan were One country in 1910 ~ 1945.
Japan spent a large amount of cost development of Taiwan & Korea & Manchuria. However, Korean don't want to become assailant .So, Korean pretend of victim when Japan lost the war.
Japan made a school, hospital ,the government ,court ,department, store, hotel, railroad, dam, ironworks, shipyard, road and founded the armed forces and performed the young man education. For these countries.
I see that Philippine under USA, which is very good, like when Taiwan under Japan. I wonder why it to Japan proposed The Racial Equality in Paris Peace Conference in 1919. However, the U.S and British took strong opposition in the conference.
Japanese style was different from western obscurant policy. Japan created many schools, hospitals, courts, shopping mall, hotels, rail ways, dams, iron factories, dockyards, and road and so on. Moreover, Japan established military with local people in these countries and educated them.
So sad now that arroyo just agreed to the ridiculous baseline law and sold the Philippines into slavery. Where is china's hundred mile baseline. And that danm barac obama and hillary clintion probably convinced them that it was all American jingoism. Damn also chines politicians.Phillipines is its own rich nation and culture. May God bless the USA and the Philippines they have a deep union and blessed heritage. Damn all those collectivist backstabbing politicians.

IMNODOCTOR are you filipino or what? it seems that your very ingrateful of what our forefathers have done, we are honoring them with this documentary. if without them your parents would have been dead or raped by those japanese.
ang totoong bayani ay yung mga nkikipaglaban para sa bayan noong wwII at yung mga nasa mindanao hindi yung nkikipaglaban sa BOXING RING.. sana mabigyan nman ng mas mataas na honor yung mga vetarano natin..

A victory against the Japanese gave us freedom, restored our dignity as a people...we should be promoting the "battle of Leyte Gulf", "battle of Manila" or some war where we are the victors at the end of it - but not Bataan, not this event! There is no substitute for victory!
Only in the Philippines....why do we Filipinos promote and celebrate a battle in which we lost? We should be promoting Filipino values...not in the context of the fall of Bataan and Corregidor in which we lost. Gen. Mc Arthur quoted - "there's no substitute for victory!" So please promote something where Filipinos are victors of some war, not like this!
a heroic stand of filpinos in battan is is a major defeat and headache in the japanesse imperial army. it was suppose to be taken in 50 days from fraom the start of the pacific war. if the camaighn goes as plan japs shoud be in austrialia in the month of may.
BUT a ddnt like the way americans make the propaganda. it was the blood of filipinos that defend bataan. Not the USSAFFE.
this is promoting true filipino values. bravery, patience, might, even against adversity. we may have lost that battle but it gained us the respect and admiration of other peoples.
There's nothing good about war - no matter what reason behind it. Filipino values, bravery, etc. have no place in war. We don't need to glorify battles just to be admired or respected by other nations.
Dead men that have no names, dead uncles and grandfathers - out of war we've lost. We Filipinos need to change our attitudes concerning "Bataan and Corregidor wars." It was slaughter, a mismatch, a waste of good men. There's no subsitute for victory. Victory in war is what counts!
We might have lost but we have stalled the Japanese timetable of overunning the rest of Asia-Pacific by more than 100 days and this gave the Allies a good breathing space to prepare a counter attack at the Battle of the Coral Sea.
@IMNODOCTOR you're right, we lost in that war, but, think of this; the japs keeps sending troops as many as 3rd wave before we're defeated, tayo...wala, no reinforcement! we fight alone on our own land, and the japs failed to conquer some areas of pacific islands, Australia and New Zealand because the jap imperial army used up all of it's troops just to conquer Philippines no more waves for these countries
my grand father was capt. jose lopez liwanag, phillipine scout, they make their stand off in bataan, he suvrvived born in capas tarlac, were he escape he know the terrain, join the guerilla of col bimbo manzano, i salute my lolo and lola for serving their country!
My grandfather is filipino but lived in America and fought in europe. He was given benefits just like all americans. Why not the original filipinos who fought for the united states? They are the real soldiers!
EXECUTOR I respectfully disagree. The Japanese have never owned up to their blme for the war. They deny Nanking and deny numerous other atrocities they created. The Germans have repeatedly apologized and taken the blame but the Japanese never have.

just read the comments on this topic, they are filled with hatred, the blame for our defeat in the philippines lies at the feet of FDR and his staff, I have spoken
TheAlliswell 10 months ago
@TheAlliswell
Vulcan750L 10 months ago 11
@Vulcan750L the Japanese didn't want the phils because of its beaches or other. They needed a base.
to back up their drive to conquer Asia. And prevent the americans to stay there to make it their base, So
the president of the phis was right, Because the US was there they went there too

Generals Wainwright and King continued the fight and finally surrendered months later.

lunafringe10 6 months ago
@lunafringe10

The president was forced to declare Philippines as independent, because America left us. Leaving us defending ourselves without them while they were out there helping their allies up in Europe, which was a total WASTE time. Now, that's a fact.
MrLangam 5 months ago
@MrLangam

There was no independent Filipino army. Filipinos fought under the leadership of American generals. They were trained, armed, and supplied, and led by the Americans.
But you are right about no reinforcements were sent, except for some supplies that managed to get through the Japanese blockade. But it wasn't enough.

A victory against the Japanese gave us freedom, restored our dignity as a people...we should be promoting the "battle of Leyte Gulf", "battle of Manila" or some war where we are the victors at the end of it - but not Bataan, not this event! There is no substitute for victory!
IMNODOCTOR 2 years ago
Only in the Philippines....why do we Filipinos promote and celebrate a battle in which we lost? We should be promoting Filipino values...not in the context of the fall of Bataan and Corregidor in which we lost. Gen. Mc Arthur quoted - "there's no substitute for victory!" So please promote something where Filipinos are victors of some war, not like this!
IMNODOCTOR 2 years ago
a heroic stand of filpinos in battan is is a major defeat and headache in the japanesse imperial army. it was suppose to be taken in 50 days from fraom the start of the pacific war. if the camaighn goes as plan japs shoud be in austrialia in the month of may.
BUT a ddnt like the way americans make the propaganda. it was the blood of filipinos that defend bataan. Not the USSAFFE.

this is promoting true filipino values. bravery, patience, might, even against adversity. we may have lost that battle but it gained us the respect and admiration of other peoples.
melsjenny 2 years ago
There's nothing good about war - no matter what reason behind it. Filipino values, bravery, etc. have no place in war. We don't need to glorify battles just to be admired or respected by other nations.
Dead men that have no names, dead uncles and grandfathers - out of war we've lost. We Filipinos need to change our attitudes concerning "Bataan and Corregidor wars." It was slaughter, a mismatch, a waste of good men. There's no subsitute for victory. Victory in war is what counts!
IMNODOCTOR 2 years ago

My grandfather is filipino but lived in America and fought in europe. He was given benefits just like all americans. Why not the original filipinos who fought for the united states? They are the real soldiers!

Thank God USA helped us. Fortunately, they didn't leave us immediately after the war. They helped us recover.

( I know that I am setting my self up for hate, but i must say it)
If you are Filipino, then I know your pain. I too am Filipino.
When I first heard of the atrocities the Japanese did not only to us, but also to our fellow Asians and Americans, I too hated them.
That was along time ago.
They truly feel sorry for what they did, and I can't tell you to change your mind, but pare, I can tell you that they are sorry.

EXECUTOR I respectfully disagree. The Japanese have never owned up to their blme for the war. They deny Nanking and deny numerous other atrocities they created. The Germans have repeatedly apologized and taken the blame but the Japanese never have.
