A beautiful and precious recording. In de los Ángeles' biography by Peter Roberts, de los Ángeles noted that "in despite of technical developments, none of the Jussi Björling recordings give you the true sound of his voice. It was a far, far more beautiful voice than you can hear on the recordings he left".
Definately a half tone lower. Many artists will save their voices in live concerts by singing big pieces a half tone lower. Possibly the greatest tenor of all time. When I listen to Corelli, Lanza ( at his best ) and Pavarotti I am also in awe. Each one has something to offer. Bocelli doesn't have that kind of voice, but offers a romantic pure tone in more contemporary songs.
Best voice of the century, much? People these days seem to think that 'Bocelli is the best' or 'Sarah Brightman is awesome' when they don't even know of this guy.
Taste differ, but as Pavarotti said himself (quote) :" Don´t compare me with Jussi, I´m only human". That will hopefully be the end of the discussion. If u LIKE another tenor better then Jussi, fine, but if u say some other tenor is better, it only makes a lier of yourself! If u r serious go to Jussi Bjorling tenors of the 78 RPM era(here on youtube) and let Jurgen Kesting explain to u why there has never been anyone as good as Jussi.
lpvcrcd, I´m quoting what i have read from interviews with Pavarotti in Swedish newspapers,(culture pages), where he also mentions that he thought it was a pity that he (Pavarotti)never sang in Turandot with Birgit Nilsson. If u like tenors, type "Jussi Bjorling a capella" here on YouTube and u will hear 1 minute with Jussi from 1938 (they didn´t fake sound those days). Although poor recording, be prepared to get STUNNED!!
Pretty good, and the audience's reaction is always the truest test.. still, it's a little disappointing that a voice as light as his would sing this in a lower key.. despite what the YT propagandists say, Jussi was no spinto.. why can't they just accept that fact and appreciate him for what he was?
It sounded sung in lower key Jussi, I am sure, could have easily managed this ariat in the origianl key So many times what we hear is not what was originally sung live or even recorded That is a shame!!
Pava had a softer voice than Jussi that is true, but i´m guessing what you mean by mechanical is the use of breath preassure, which is required for the sound to carry on an operastage.
You should listen to pavas earlier nessuns ( 1970 and 1980 ) here on the tube.
With a good mike, some filters and reverb you can sound anyway you like.........
With myself being a male singer (not professional, though), I always appreciate a man sounding like a man. I believe the best male voice has beautiful, controlled strength.
again. This is so, so good. I keep coming back to it.

Today, February 2, we celebrate his 100th birthday. He was truly a singer of a century.

Very impressive, but compared to Maestro Pavarotti, his voice sounds mechanical and contrived to me. To each his own...

Yes, I agree. Jussi has a beautiful interpretation, but none I have heard compare to Pavarotti. The aria belongs to him.
