Your Dad sounds like one of the original adventurers that loved the mountains and was a leader in this relatively unknown sport. He's someone you can be proud of.
I would like to know which section of the Salmon river is unrunnable and at what time during the spring? I haven't found that section yet nor have I discovered at what level during spring runoff it is unrunnable.
@firstamerican2 The only section that really alot of people dont run on the Salmon is the lower portion from Pine Bar to Heller Bar. At about 20,000cfs people quit running it only because of one rapid called the Slide. cant really portage it, it gets a huge back eddy that wants to suck you back into it. I have ran this rapid successfully 2 times. Once at 32,000cfs and at 36,000cfs. 2 fricken huge holes in it that you cant miss. My dad flipped there in 1982 and was in the water a long time.
@bigriverunner yes he got out at the mouth of the snake river (hells canyon stretch) which is 5.5 miles, along time in cold water and the old school lifejackets. My dad first ran the selway river (paradise 2 selway falls) labor day weekend in 1958. he is a true pioneer, he ran selway with 2 man paddle crew and snake and salmon rivers with sweeps. he is 68 and never oared a raft. he is a great teacher when it comes to reading water. With sweeps and paddles (no oars) you have 2 read water, quick
Man, I've seen some angry rivers but that makes everything I've seen look like child's play. That reminds me of the Tsangpo Gorge in Nepal. Albeit nowhere as big :)
Salmon river in the spring is unrunnable in the spring, a few have tried and never lived to through it. Snake river in the fall has some nice12 foot drops.

@walk3369 I hope your Dad finally got out ok. This big stuff can be a lot of fun, however, it can turn dangerous very rapidly.
