when you think of Agee's tragic life: I can see that backyard, slanting upwards, under the trees, under the stars -- it has planted a place in my heart.
Did I miss it somewhere? Does anyone know who the pianist is? Definitely written for orchestra. The "reduction" was done by Samuel Barber, who was an exceptional pianist.
No, it was originally written for orchestra. It was essentially commissioned by Steber to sing with the Boston Symphony. Later, a piano setting as well as a setting for small chamber orchestra (of about 10) were done.
superb. Although the piece necessarily suffers greatly in a piano reduction, sadly this pianist is better than the dreadful pickup orchestra which did the first recording with Steber.
Steber's interpretation is unsurpassed; it is classy singing and artistry. The first recording of the piece with Steber and orchestra has been re-released on cd, together with the Hermit Songs sung by Leontyne Price.
ending notes are beautiful!

Steber versus Price, piano versus orchestra...Can't make a choice they're both so special. Think I'll just cherish both versions.

The piece was written for piano and later orchestrated, according to what I've read. I rather like this version.
