Everyone is free to express their opinion. Kenny made many video's with Basie, but he and Les were of different ethnic backgrounds. This video, from 1979, shows a 42 year old white sax player with black hair. Three years later, another video shows a black sax player with grey hair that looks similar but not the same. In any event, it's not really important, and the music was great. No real need to get upset - you're happy and so am I. 'Nuff said.
The tenor sax player on Sweet Georgia Brown with Count Basie IS Les Holmquist - a life long friend and best man at my wedding in 1959. Last saw Les in the eighties after he made this concert tour, and talked to him at his sisters inWinimac, Indiana before he died of stomach cancer some years ago. He and I played together in the fifties and sixties and then went separate ways.
It's Les alright. He was best man at my wedding in 1959 and we worked together in the fifties and sixties. Saw him last in the eighties, but talked to him on New Years day before he died at his sisters home in Winimac, Indiana. A good friend and musician that is greatly missed.
I sincerely think that this band was one of the very best that the Count had (1977-1980) with John Clayton on bass, Butch Miles on drums, Kenny Hing on tenor, Sonny Cohn on trunpet etc ... The very best !!!!!!
We miss you Count Basey

Kenny Hing took the place of Jimmy Forrest in november 1977 and left the band in 2002. Nobody took his place during all that period. .

Every one of Count's band was great, but none would ever replace good old Lester Young!
