The development of the relationship between Aunt and Yang Guo is also unrealistic. I don't feel the attraction between them. By far, not the drama's fault since it was just following the actual plot. I blame the writer.
I find the parent-child relationship rather disturbing as well. Who knew Jade Maiden was a cougar?
This story is shot beautifully -- that much I have to give credit for. However, I don't like how it's so aesthetically appealing that it distracts from the characters, and real action scenes. This is something that China always does, which is why I largely ignore their dramas. This one is no different.

thats because he learned the art but he's not exactlya "maiden" I think? does that kinda make sense. and she also had the arts that her teacher taught her so ...... hope it makes sense
Well I think the main reason is that they wanted to show Yang Guo's childhood, but at the same time they needed Huang Xiao Ming to act as him. They didn't try stressing Xiao Long Nu's childhood that much.
Yang Guo is 14 years old and Xiao Long Nu is 18 years old (based on jin yong The ROCH's novel writer [1959]) at that time so it's not weird to love each other he..
the thing that makes it "weird" or un-acceptable in the show isn't their age difference, its the relationship of a master - student which is suppose to be a parent - child type relationship...
