This whole dance scene is like a metaphor for all my relationships in my 20's. Getting seduced by some very hot woman, getting dumped, and eventually finding someone better. Genius.
This is so great, it is my favorite episode. I saw or when it aired, it is so ground breaking for tv. Now they do musical numbers all the time on shows but not before Moonlighting. Every time I listen to this song I see this sequence in my head. Billy Joel wrote it about the David Addison character.
OMG how cool to find this here on Youtube! I remember being absolutely transfixed when I saw this when it first aired back in the 80's, and it blew me AWAY. This is the only song of Billy Joel's I like, and I don't just like it--I love it! This dance routine was amazing back then and the whole series was the best, most clever, scintillating show on TV back in that era--I never missed an episode. I could listen to this song over and over and over a hundred times. Now THAT is music.
WOW! Stanley Donen? Really? I am stunned. I did not think he did tv stuff. I know him well from the movies you mentioned and others. This is real dancing--not that junk on weekly tv now. Thanks again for posting this. You got to give Bruce Willis credit for doing a good job. Ms. Bergman did a spectacular job.
@necktieguy1 It was choreographed and directed by the amazing Stanley Donen. He is best known for Singing in the Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and The Pajama Game.
I remember when this aired, and this scene was really looked at as ground-breaking TV, even though it was a throw-back to any number of movies, or golden-age television shows. The next day it was all anybody talked about, and it just shows how novel a staged musical number was on network TV in 1986. Thanks for posting this. In a lot of ways, it seems like only yesterday...
One of the best and romantic scenes in all of television. Either Bruce Willis or Cybill Shepherd should go on Dancing With The Stars. They started it all and made dancing really sexy and cool.
I was 13 that year, and I thought that when I grew up, I would engage in their style of verbal back and forth. Unfortunately, that never came to pass.
I wish this extended version of the song was available somewhere. This dance sequence is incredible and the song fits it perfectly. You really get a good New York vibe from this.
One of the things that truly defined Maddie's character was her constant denial of the way she TRULY felt about David. After all, this whole sequence was HER dream, so the ending to the dream was what she REALLY wanted. Her subconscious tried to tell her what she outwardly denied for the first few years.
Oh, and because of this episode, "Big Man on Mulberry Street" became my all-time favorite Billy Joel song.
This was one of my favorite episodes because of the dance number. Sandal Bergman is amazing but BRUCE - just makes me love him more! He's still extremely sexy today!
What a great dance sequence--the choreography, the music, and these two!. Sandahl Bergman was a brilliant dancer. Bruce Willis did a great job (and with a sense of humor). Thanks for posting this.
one of the best scenes in a tv show ever i remember the first time i saw this i could'nt take my eyes away reminds you how classy tv was back in the day.
The only show on TV today that even approaches this level of creativity is 30 Rock. Moonlighting was a true classic and Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd were absolutely magical in it . . .
@DaftSwank Have you ever seen the BBC's Ashes to Ashes? It's a mixture of Moonlighting and Miami Vice. Also a little Twilight Zone through in. It's a time travel show that mostly takes place during 1981-1983. The run through those 80s tracks on there like a gazel on steroids! :D
i always watched moonlighting back in the 80 i was in high school and this is the one episode i remember out of all of the episodes...i ve always liked the song.havent heard it in ages ..i sooo love it now!
my name is myrna too I never missed an episode of moonlighting.moonlighting aired 1985 to 1989.I was 20 in 85.big man on mulberry street was in 86.i was 21.I think i might be a little older you. but i truly am a huge fan of moonlighting & i bought all the episodes on dvd
This scene truly is a classic and this style of storytelling was why so many of us loved this show. Bruce still hates this scene because he thinks he is awful; personally, he is better than I remember. And, when Cybill walks down in the blue dress...you completely forget there was another woman in this scene. Seriously, the shot on her in that blue dress is the best picture of her ever.
Yes, this episode was where Maddy finds out that David was married before and that he lost the baby he had with his wife. This is made all the more sadder when we know that in the future he'll lose another child with Maddy herself. :(
Its cool the way her dress changes from red back 2 purple in the light...bruce was soooooo fuckin hot in moonlighting!!!! Love him soooo much lol an good on him 4 takin on the dancin!! Hed do anythin! :)
the last time i watched that scene was 20 years ago . thank you ! i thought that would be lost in the distant past never to be seen again . thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking me back to being 15 again if only for 6 mins
You know I found this video because I remembered and was looking for the Billy Joel tune.....I do remember seeing this episode of Moonlighting. Mad props to Bruce Willis for taking on the dancing. Someone should entice him onto Dancing With the Stars....forgot how much more hair he had then too.....both of us actually.... ;)
You're thinking of the "We're looking for a man with a mole on his nose" exchange in "Brother, Can You Spare a Blonde?" Look for it among this user's vids. I asked for it a few years back.
This is my favorite Billy Joel song. I had purchased The Bridge album and hadn't really listened to it. Some time later, I realized that the episode was entitled Big Man On Mulberry Street and that I had this song on an album (before CDs)...
Awesome. Not normally a Billy Joel fan BUT this song is my favorite recording ever! Didn't know about this episode and found articles about it via google, then this vid. Thanks for posting it.
THank you for this video. This teamed up my two all time faves, Moonlighting and Billy Joel and when this episode first aired, I can remember being so excited I nearly wet my pants....you rock!
