  • who cares what he meant... he uses technique to rip!

  • @12moetown Right! Who gives a fuck what the literal meaning of the word he used is?! We KNOW he's not talking about anything having to do with getting his guitar wet!

  • great lesson!

  • "First I'm gonna shred a bit here, and then do this thing with my hand and shred a bit there"

Genius. I just wish he spoke English.

  • such a genious

  • Easy for you to say Eric! With those freaking alien fingers you have! I have these short handicapped fingers! LOL. I traded guitars with you once at a Musician's Friend in Knoxville, TN. Love your music man! Been listening to Bloom today. Rock on!

  • HA i have solved the riddle o.0 ... hes not human -_-

  • Thanks, kenp3L, now I can't watch this without picturing him dabbing at his bridge with a moistened sponge! LOL XD

  • @screenpuller That sort of sounds like something he would do.

    "It really helps my tone."

  • There is some incredible advice in this 2 minute video.

  • I have a minor correction touching upon word meaning. He said that one of his techniques is "dampening" when what he surely meant to say was "damping." The former means to apply moisture to and the latter means to progressively diminish oscillation (of guitar strings in this case). Surely he doesn’t want to get his guitar wet.

  • @kenp3L Thanks for the info.

  • @kenp3L Douche

  • @kenp3L Who cares if he said dampening?.....Geek >.>

  • @kenp3L But then how is he going to keep it clean at high volume levels?!

  • @kenp3L He said damping.

  • @kenp3L I think he meant "dampin'-ing."

  • @kenp3L WRONG - you're speaking of the definition of the word as a NOUN. Dampening as a VERB means: 1.v. damp·ened, damp·en·ing, damp·ens

    v.tr.

    1. To make damp.

    2. To deaden, restrain, or depress

    3. To soundproof.

    v.intr.

    To become damp.

Read a dictionary before you make a complete ass of yourself on the internet while trying to fake intelligence.

  • @GaRhythym Sorry, but I have checked the OED (which is widely regarded as the accepted authority on the English language) on this, and it supports my position. *Dampening* means to make damp or to moisten. It can also mean to dull, deaden or diminish the force or ardor of, depress, or deject. So it would be correct to say, "The accident dampened the spirits of the travelers." However, if one refers to reducing the action of an oscillating body, it's *damping*.

  • crazy good !

  • Very nice video. Love it when Eric picks or thumbs the E or A string and lets it ring while he goes on his next solo run. Erics explanation is well said also.

  • I'm getting true stereo on this vid! sounds good!

  • how did he learn to play like that

  • On the Music Path is an iPad app that features master classes from world-renowned musicians accompanied by complete notation and tab synchronized to the teacher's playing.

    Caught Eric over there

  • kinda has a jazz guitar sound , a little like Jack Grassel's guitar lesson's here on guitar instructor .

  • @GuitarInstructor Wise words, thanks so much for the tip :)

  • I saw Eric play a bunch in clubs here in Dallas in the early 80's.

Made it kind of hard to get too cocky about one's own playing.

  • guitar instructor , is halleonard ?

Thanks for sharing the new ones

  • @Previewexcerpt Yes it is.

  • @GuitarInstructor

    Yes what is ?

Thanks for sharing the guitar dvd trailer

    John

  • What for a scale ???

  • john carmack?

  • i have that guitar strap

  • @HalLeonardDVD what is the dvd?

  • @Ignore14 I believe it's from The Art of Guitar.

  • dampening has to be one of the hardest things to learn when playing guitar. I've been playing for a few years and it's really hard to get the notes to come out clean without unwanted noise.

  • I, Don't like this new youtube, none of my videos load all the way

  • new youtube?

  • Wolf Marshall does a guitar lesson @ guitar instructor like this one , only his guitar sound is not as impressive as Eric Johnson .

Would really love to h ear Greg Koch , or Doug Boduch cover this guitar style

God BLess , and thanks for sharing the excerpt guitar lesson trailer

  • what an axeman!

  • Thanks for the upload. Great lesson. It's free on utube, very fortunate. Eric Johnsons DVDs when he is playing with other great guitarists is incredible to watch too. I have an older VHS and he plays three songs with his former band and I couldn't believe the tone he was playing out of the guitar. It took a little while to absorb since I was used to heavier rock. Eric's style is awesome.

  • What the hell? why would six people not like this? IT MAKES NO SENSE!!!

  • Does this guitar lesson come with a Free chord and scale book

  • His tone and phrasing has always been amazing to me.

  • Top notch guitar instructor !

Thanks for sharing this one with us , although it's a pretty short film clip , more like a trailer rather than a guitar lesson ?

  • If you look at it, his fingers have more muscle than most of our bodies.

  • I agree !

Right up there with players like Greg Koch , and James Marshall Hendrix

    THanks again for sharing guitarinstructor

  • impressive rock guitar chops i'm sure eric is in your stable of top instructors! Love his guitar style thank you for sharing !

    John

  • @aperisions THAT'S all i hear of Eric Johnson, Cliffs of Dover Cliffs of Dover Cliffs of Dover

  • @icanpeeyee Then you need to listen to Lonely in the Night.

  • I hate you Eric for being THAT good

  • @VaughanF1 I love him for the same reason

  • Lead Guitar Solo Lessons !!!

Guitar instructor is the best !

  • wow him and job bonamassa are my new favs!!

  • Mr.Johnson , I notice things go better when I use the techniques you're outlinning here in this video. a big help.

I'm working hard on finding a method to merge your style with that of buckethead.

I know that may seem strange to you but my brain said do it , and my brain is not usually wrong about this sort of thing.

and thoughts on this from you would be of interest , namely the buckethead binge and grab track mixed with your cliffs of dover techniques.

  • I would rather see more Guitar Lesson's from John 5 , than John Denver !

Always an impressive video guitar lesson @ guitarinstructor

  • How about some John Denver Guitar Lesson's @ Guitarinstructor

  • Greg Koch , Doug Boduch , John 5 , Eric Johnson , Jimmy Brown , Guitar Instructor ROCKS !

  • hate all this astro and cosmic stuff... give me more blueeeees

  • watch the old steel players

  • Love his hair.

  • Yep kids thats called proper technique!! No rubber bands or bobbls on the first fret here!!

  • ERic Johnson

    John 5

    Greg Koch

    Doug Boduch

Redd Volkaert GuitarInstructor has them all

    Nice one guys

  • He has and always will be one of my very favorite musicians in the guitar world .

    NIce one guitarinstructor com

  • very cool

  • Listen to how long that last note rings out at 2:14. Very subtle, but very nice!

  • how oculd i get his tone as far as effects?

  • @earlbrown33 He uses a bit of delay and reverb but his tone is all in his fingers.

  • @Jasn1111 bullshit he OFTEN uses a special kind of tube driven overdrive pedal, made by some guy named butler i think. its so obvious that the tone is not from the fingers alone. i am so sick of hearing that.. the amp and pedals and perfect setup are so important to tone.. if he played on a crappy amp without special pedal it would sound not half as good.

  • @GeekG @GeekG: You are partly right. Having great gear contributes to a better sound but anybody at EJ's level can play on a sh*t guitar with a sh*t amp and make it sing. Even if you could get EJ's rig, directly from him, and he even set it up for you it's still not going to sound exactly like him. His tone is in the fingers.

  • @Jasn1111 You're going a bit far I think. A genuinely shit guitar straight into a shit amp...no way will EJ sound like EJ.

  • @yngwieisking: You guys seem to be missing the point. A great player is going to sound great regardless of the equipment they're using. Great equipment, with all the bells and whistles is only going to enhance the sound.

Sure if you gave EJ a Sears Strat through a Peavey Rage 158, he's not going to sound like he does in the studio but he's still going to sound like Eric Johnson. And he's still going to sound better than some kid who just started but has a pro rig.

  • @Jasn1111 I'm not disagreeing with that. But as you stated, EJ with shit equipment is never going to sound as good as he normally does. Even the best playing will sound pretty lame if the tone is crap. That's the point I was trying to make.

  • @GeekG Practice makes perfect ~ Not pedals.

  • @earlbrown33 go to eric johnson.com, click on gear, then on amps. there is a layout of his set up.

As far as his settings go, can't help you there.

  • he over-emphasizes the dampening part while demonstrating it

  • 100% gay . . . hes a guitar god tho !~

  • @krisitantobias = 100% moron

  • Guitarinstructor nice job on the new video !

would love to see more of eric johnson's licks

  • @JohnGuitarSolo - buy a concert ticket or DVD

  • You really gotta love these Hal Leonard Guitar Lesson DVD's

Joe Bonassa , Greg Koch, Albert Lee, Doug Boduch , all amazing instructors @ guitarinstructor

  • he changes position so fast it looks like missing frames.

  • my guitar teacher has his signature strat its ike 3000

  • Hold on there...in the motorcycle world many people mis-pronounce dampening as in stopping the movement of shocks or steering stem. There it's damping. Are we not doing the same here, stopping or muting strings hence the proper term is DAMPING. To dampen something is to wipe with a damp cloth. Not good for the fretboard.

  • What kind of effect is he using? It's not regular distortion, is it?

  • @redderknick fuzz face pedal, delay, and chorus.

  • Sweet, thanks. I know nothing about effects, lol...

  • He used to use an old Chandler TUbe Driver, the pedl I believe has actually tubes in it. GIlmore occasioally used one as well. There are two basic types of "distortion": overdrive, more of a bluesy kind of tone, and distortion, used in a lot of classic rock and metal. He uses more of an overdrive. There are also the older Fuzz type pedals, a little different flavor. SOme of the newer boutique pedal have one of each on each side. Very versatile.

  • @jclev99 ">Carl Verheyen....."

Thanks for mentioning Carl Verheyen. I've never heard of him, but I just checked him out and he's Great!!! Thanks again!

  • 0:51 sustain?

  • boooooooo!

  • EJ's art of music makes me like lower than dirt

  • yeah he does it to reduce string noise and to kill amp hum.

  • When he is playing using his "dampening" technique you will see that the sound is quieter, almost muted.

  • @GuitarInstructor

Still one of the guitar worlds best instructors by a country mile !!

Thank you for sharing this guitar lesson excerp guitar instructor

  • @GuitarInstructor

One of if not the greatest guitar instructor in your stable of players

    God Bless

  • @GuitarInstructor

    Fantastic Guitar Instructor

  • @GuitarInstructor

Clearly a world class guitar instructor , thank you for sharing this one

  • Dampening also known as palm muting

  • now it's clear ;)

  • if there is a string you aren't playing, stop it from vibrating, with whatever finger, or part of either hand that you aren't using--right hand palm of picking hand, or fingers that are not fretting a note.

  • @MadGriffith

He mutes the strings he already played.

This is vital for a clean guitar playing

  • @MadGriffith watch the video he tells you.

  • 1 of the very best guitar tones in music today!

  • if you guys like johnsons pentatonic leads check out shawn lane

  • He should take some happy lessons from Greg Koch! Thats all. But you got to hand it to the Cliff Dover he's a riffster!

  • greg koch is awesome. I saw him promote fender guitars at Wardbrodt music in Madison Wisconsin in '04 or '05 and he blew my mind. then he played a little guitar later and that was cool too

  • i agree

  • I like his guitar timbre.

  • So clehneis, lets hear YOUR style and tone

  • its not like hes one of the greatest living guitarists or anything.

also, he can tell the difference between battery manufacturers. so i assume he has something you dont...

  • I'm glad I don't have what he does. The guy is F'in nuts.

  • if by "nuts" you mean brilliant, then yes.

  • You sound pissed clehneis, maybe cause Eric doesn't play pissed-off notes that resonates with you?

  • Lol... maybe. I mean your right about his music not resonating with me. Pissed-off or happy notes are all good with me; its all in the delivery and I guess I just don't like the way this guy delivers.

  • Fenderbenders advice is good stuff, I am not good at this, but it is true if you can make the sound with your mouth it will help I leaned the lead to cliffs of dover by singer it first.

If there is tab for these lesson let me know somebody email me please and God Bless

    Steve

  • In my lead playing, I've become stuck in the trap that my licks and lead playing is kind of stuck up in the same pentatonic/blues playing, and even though I'm really tired of playing it, it's still what I play, it's like my fingers are dictating what I play instead of me. How do I liberate myself of this? xD

  • the Pentatonic scale is a much misunderstood scale and I've heard lots of guitar players who use this scale without knowing what they are doing musically. to liberate your playing, ideally you need to be able to play over the chords of the music using notes from those chords. other notes can be used for effect. Eric's playing sounds so good because he is not playing one scale. he plays through the chords of the music.

  • But, I don't have the time to watch each chord, figure out which notes I can use, and then put it together in a sense that makes it sound good with progression! Please explain how I can do this.

  • re: Torfinnmadssen

In the same way that you've learned playing in those scales, you can learn to play in only the notes of each chord, by mapping those notes accross the fretboard, then playing slowly through until each becomes second nature. However, to make use, the change between playing in one and the other must also be practiced. Alternatively, lookup "modes" (Ionian, Dorian etc) or learn new scales such as true tone and spanish gypsy and look for blending shapes between them.

  • Thank you very much! :)

  • Empty your mind as if you've never played those licks. Then play speaking with your voice, and make what you have to say come through the instrument. Youve just hit a bump. We all do, try that, or go in a different key, listen to a different genre of music to get inspired etc etc

  • or even better, learn music theory and learn how to use pentatonic scales properly

  • learn your modes, 1. Ionian,2.Dorian,3Phrigian,4.Lydian,5.mixolydian,6Aloloian,7.locrain the modes are made up of the 7 notes of the major scale so try this if you know the major scale just take like a. A power cord and play the fith note of the a minor scale which is E so play that E to E and you will be play the phyrigian mode then just mix that with the minor pentatonic I hope this helps

  • That's not even close to what playing modes is.

  • that dampening tip is exteremely helpful. EJ rules!

  • and hard to master

  • I hate people who can't keep their non-religious beliefs to themselves.

  • if every one keeps opinions on this to the video about the music and his teaching it would be an ideal world but shit happens

  • ideal? you notice how you can search anything for an hour and read the comments and no one comments on anything religious unless its a video with a religious mood and or motive apparently this atheist or whatever you want to call him wanted to watch a video about guitar skills a video with the main idea set as music, guitar music. if he is offended by the person playing religious views he was obliviously he wasnt watching because he wanted to learn

  • my sentements exactly

  • damping is not for everyone i realized it all depends on how you think as a guitar player

  • If you don't dampen your strings, how do you keep them from ringing sympathetically to the vibrations of what you are playing? I suppose if you're not using a very aggressive tone, you don't need to worry, but EJ uses some big gain sounds.

I think damping (dampening?) is for everyone.

  • ha for a second i thought when you said dampening that you meant like wrapping a rag around the neck cause that's for people who can't play clean dampening only makes for better technique

  • No, I was talking about using your hands.

Dude check out Jennifer Batten, though, for some SICK technique through the use of an extra dampening device.

    Cheers

  • Eric Johnson's great...anyone else ever hear his song "Tribute to Jerry Reed?" I don't know of many rock guitarists who like Jerry Reed! And then, strangely enough, a country guitarist by the name of Brad Paisley paid tribute to Eric Johnson with "Cliffs of Rock City."

You know, I wouldn't mind seeing Eric Johnson and Brad Paisley doing an instrumental together!

  • yer i have that song, it is really good and has a lot of feel for that type of piece, i dont know how he makes solo acoustic guitar compositions sound so complete and heartfelt

EJ has been my favourite player for years now, well above all the shredders

  • It's my opinion everything he just demonstrated in this video has nothing to do with his signature sound/tone! I think it was more in depth on technique and cleanliness so you get a nice clean projected sound from the guitar and to fill out the scales so they won't turn into dead ends and it will also open doors to take you into new territory I guess I just defined his term "passage" here without thinking!lol Don't take it from me though I am just a half assed hillbilly guitar player!lol

  • whats up with EJ:s tone nowadays?

  • I play OK guitar, and other guitarists occasionally come up and ask me about my tone. It's simply a 1970 vintage Les Paul Deluxe, into Boss delay, into a Mesa Boogie F30, touch of 'verb, and use the OD or Clean channel. They play my rig, but it's not the same. I play, it sounds different. I'm not saying better, just "different" - I can DO it, but I can't explain it.

  • wich delay you use the dd-3?

  • His intention was never to show how to play like EJ. Why would you want to be a clone of someone else? Take the little tips he gives and use it in your own style.

He explained the "flowing" sound by using upstrokes.

  • bouncing creates the violin like sound, pay attention to his hands, when he picks super fast he picks with his thumb joint, when he plays slow but emotional he plays with his wrist. He just has fluidity in his playing because he mixes scales very well in the scale he plays. His lessons are great, because you can actually hear what he plays and you can learn the runs yourself. If your not skillful enough to just record what he plays slow it down, find the scale then play it, then don't talk crap.

  • Comment removed

  • the violin tone is really more of his rig than how he picks. he plays the same when he plays on a clean setting but the violing tone isnt really there. but his technique helps as well. they are all parts of a puzzle.

  • EJ is an exotrope!

  • whaat???

  • he has a wiked tone

  • amazing tone!

  • It sounds too keyboardy and wimpy. I'd like to hear him crank that amp up and lose all the echo. It always sounds like he's playing in the Grand Canyon with a blanket over his amp.

  • sounds to flanged out. Doesn't sound like himself at all.

  • Actually he should use the word 'damping'-dampening is what you do before you use a washcloth. I'm just sayin'...

  • ..from the Master himself.. listen to E.J.!!

  • ERIC!!

  • nice
