HDGD is not a sword art that originates from ancient Korea. It was created recently by some persons. The founders testified as such at the Korean law court.
Why doesn't they use the traditional Korean sword “Hwando (環刀) ”? KRIGATA and SAGEO for thrusting into a belt are the features of Japanese sword. It is not the traditional Korean sword.
I can never find such old Korean sword or Korean soldier's photograph.
The traditional Korean sword was hung at the waist or the shoulder.
well...what is Gumdo, anyway??? I've never heard it. Historically, Korea has been a vassal state of China more than 1000 years. Why did Korean need sword battle?
Wow, all the Japanese people are hating on this cause they have an inferiority complex or something. While it is true that Gumdo comes from Kendo. It is not like Japanese don't learn from Koreans. Even the Japanese Kanji writing system, Buddhism, architecture, agriculture, metallurgy, and DNA Lineage came from the Korean Peninsula.
It is so funny watching the Japanese hating on their Korean neighbors while they themselves shares so much in common.
Please stop comparing Korea and Japan as if one culture is stealing from the other. Of course there are similarities in both these cultures. Japan did rule Korea for some time and the two countries are neighbours.
Harping on Korea for Gumdo is like harping on Canada for drinking coffee, Canada did not invent coffee but a 'Double Double’ (coffee two creams two sugars) is part of our cultural identity none the less.
Gumdo is now part of Korean culture. They have made it there own.
Korean Gumdo is very dangerous art, since they let children hold wooden swords or imitation Katana easily. In Japan we can't use its easily till master give the pardon.why Kendo use bamboo sword?since even just wooden or imitation sword can kill.if the children kill other people slily, could you accept the blame? Korean Gumdo show the brassy performances and get many student and money teaching in hazard without any definite knowledge.this is serious problem for society.
You are good fellow, I see that. No offence to you. BUT I still do not accpet this movie-like flashy move of Gumdo which use Japanese stuff and do not show respect to its tradition. Kendo is not the sport, it is traditional martial art rooted hundred of years of samurai combat, not like Gumdo with several decades old history. If you ever see Kendo guys who play such way shown here to magnet new players, let me know, I know you will never find those in Kendo.
this is not a copy of kendo. they r not wearing hakama, bogu, and shinai. their movements have no resemblance to the japanese way of sword (kendo). no one is claiming that 'haidong gumdo' and kendo are the samething so i dont know where u get the idea of calling it a copy of kendo. just to let u know, koreans have been using steel swords long before the japanese even started to use kanji. but u do have a point that haidong gumdo is only several decades old. still, doesnt mean its a copy though.
If that is not hamaka, what is it? Korean have such cloth? I saw many Gumdo posts in other YT posts, and they are using Katana. Korean traditional steel sword and cloth are totally from what I see here and there. If Gumdo is different from Kendo, why these happens?
korea is a member of IKF(international kendo federation) licensed under AJFK(all japan kendo federation). there are two different gumdo(or kumdo) organizations in korea and they are haidong gumdo and gumdo(or kumdo). u've seen gumdo vids on YT? then of course its just like japanese kendo cuz it really is from japan. haidong gumdo vid such as this one is not kendo cuz it is under different organization. i think this is why u r mistaken korea copied kendo. hope this helped...
I know Haidon Gumdo and IKF are different league. I respect IKF and they are one of the best pacticisioners in the world. But Haidon Gumdo...they just started in mid 20th century with by some guys who were not qualified masters.... and now this flashy moves to get new people. I wonder how IKF people think about Heidon guys in Korea...
@tokyocityrat I did some research IKF guys in korea doesn't like haidong because they use the term gumdo(kumdo). gumdo is the korean pronunciation of kendo so it creates confusion for those who want to learn kendo but can't tell the difference between real gumdo and haidong gumdo. I do agree that haidong focuses too much on those flashy moves to steal students from gumdo. but i still dont' think it is a copy, except they use the name gumdo
You done nice research...and I knew Gumdo guys do not like Haidong guys. I think it is because of these moves...no back up with real duel theory and without tradition. For the people (mostly westerners) who are interested in gumdo, they may think this haidong thing is the real gumdo or kendo. Gumdo is really rooted long history...more than 1000yrs and this thing is only 50yrs. Anyway, just think if you roll over infront of your enemy, what will happen next? your head chopped off.
Thats true, but this is just a performance...to give people entertainment they do this...think of a real fight with sword, where the fight would end in 4 seconds...its not a good way to demonstration swordart...that would only be a good way to demonstrate killing.
These choreographed fights are amazing. My tournaments don't have huge choreographs like this. Then again most of mine are in high school gyms. And you people should stop arguing and appreciate that someone had the brilliant idea to put this on here.
@killjoy234234 get ur facts straight, japan colonized korea for around 30 years not for several "CENTURIES"! about the culture, koreans played one of the major roles of spreading and teaching the japanese how to read and write chinese characters(kanji) several "CENTURIES" ago. during this time, japan borrowed and improvised on some of korean cultures so thats why u see those little similarities in the two cultures.
Japan send students to China and Korea more than 10 centuries ago, then closed door until USA come to coast of Japan in mid 19th century. @tokyocityrat i didnt say korea was the only country to spread chinese characters to japan, though it did influenced the way how japanese pronounce the kanji. u'll notice when koreans read hanja(kanji) u could almost guess what they r saying due to the simalarities on how japanese read the kanji as well. u r right about japan developed in their own unique cultures after learning everything they need to know from the two countries.
I do not deny Korean influence over Japanese history. In fact, there are alot. However, if you hear what Korean always saying that Korean is like Japan's mother country...shit (sorry my language) like that. To all of you of the whole world.
Komdo is stupid sports in imitation of Japanese old KENdo of Korea.
Please stop it immediately if you learn Komdo now.
And I suggest to learn KENdo.
"KEN" of "KENdo" is a meaning called the swords, and "the DO" is a meaning called the ways.
"kom" of Komdo does not have a meaning at all.
Japanese Bushido and keen mind is included in "KENdo".
There is mind to respect the enemy even if it is an enemy.
Please learn "KENdo" if I want to train true Bushido mind.

The fact is, every single martial art is powerful on yourself and helps you have a better way of life, as long as you don't practice for bad stuff.
