I think some of these comments are somewhat ill-informed. MR is still an emergent technology in the classroom. It is not ready for widespread adoption, nor is it being sold into schools yet. All SMART are doing here is highlighting a benefit of the SDC, which although overpriced, is still a great teaching tool and cannot be compared to a webcam. Don't forget that many 'old' technologies need to be developed and marketed before they are ready for the mainstream

I can see some benefits. Augmented and Mixed Reality are one and the same, the name has just been changed by some companies for simplicity. Most technology these days is old technology, so no surprise there. But it is nice to see this becoming more accessible for your regular school teachers, who wouldn't know how to put together some open-source, uncompiled project. If they are adding support for it - great, why not. If it doesnt change the price :)

How is this an improvement on manipulation of 3D objects (on a 2D screen) using just the mouse? There's nothing here that's new, but it is expensive. School boards don't have enough money to begin with - yet they are being talked into tying up millions on old technology which they will then be stuck with for the next 15 years.

Thank you for your comments. Yes, AR and MR have been around for many years, but until recently they haven’t really been used in education. With mixed reality integrated with Notebook Software and the SDC 330, educators will not only be able to manipulate, but also do things such as write in digital ink, add labels and capture all in the same Notebook file they’re working in. Keep in mind, the price of the SDC 330 hasn’t increased.

"Mixed Reality" indeed. This ia Augmented reality. And ANY web cam can do it. Teachers, and administrators, don't be fooled. Don't give Smart Technologies $1000 of dollars just because the slapped their own new name on a FREE technology. Just search YouTube for Augmented reality.

Disappointing. This is 6-7 year old technology, which I saw originally as a tool for use in video conferencing and online education at York. It is likely older than that. Seems to be not any better than it was then, and in fact the patterns should be removed from the rendered image as they are distracting. It also does not seem to be as good as a mouse for manipulating 3D objects. I was hoping for better.
