hey man, it has been a long time since i saw this film test. have you done any other works on film? or u just move on to dslrs? i have to say, film looks so much better, and i love this clip very much!
I know most beginning filmmakers have little money, but i'd urge them to save up for a decent 16mm than anything digital. Film will always be taken more seriously. Sometimes you can make digital look filmic, but film always looks like film. Sure, it's pricer, but that's where real movies are made. Even the Red One often (unless in the hands of Peter jackson or such) looks videoy if not done right.
The truth and beauty of film remind me of a quote in Shakespeare's Henry IV by Falstaff: "Dost thou hear Hal? Never call a true piece of gold a counterfeit. Thou art essentially mad (made) without seeming so." No matter how hard digital tries it will never be a true piece of gold. It will never be essentially made without seeming so.
Before I watched this video for the past couple years I kept thinking "Someday I'm gonna make all of my movies digital to cut costs". But after watching this I think you have rejuvenated my want for someday doing everything in film. Thank you very much :)
@ItsPenguinBob it was hand cranked and the gate I bought on ebay for cheap. itsvery easy to modify. I could of modified my existing gate with some patience.
@helloimelliott Basically you could, but I suggest having it done by a machinist. the gate needs to be exactly 0.488. and it needs to be very polished to avoid scratching the film.
@Joni0001984 your in a dream world if you think the scarlet is going to match the look of 16mm motion picture film. Your scarlet will look like video, like every other digital camera out there.
The scarlet doesn't have 16 stops of dynamic range, grain, gate regulation movement, the unique look of kodak vision 3.
the scarlet will be GOOD, theres no doubt about it. but film and digital are 2 entirely different things, with 2 entirely different looks.
This looks great! I have the same camera and I'm going to do some test shots soon. There's just one thing I need to make sure of. When estimating where the super 16 frame is, do you add to the left or right of the viewfinder? I'm thinking it's the left. It's tough to focus the K3 on the fly like you did, I thought your shots turned out well considering that.
Thanks! I was confusing myself. I'm aware of the vignetting, I think it begins to appear around 27mm and below. It really is a fun camera to play with, can't beat the price. Maybe this is obvious to some, but I found it much easier to focus the stock lens by zooming all the way in (creating a shallow dof), then zooming back out to the desired focal length. Anyway, awesome vid! Your newer stuff is great too.
hey! I got my film in super 16mm so single perf film at Kodak Canada in Toronto. it was like 65$ i think... they have loads of film type you can choose from. hope this helps..
Digital is cool and all, but it doesn't have anything on film. Especially the fact that once those cameras die they just die. Film cameras can be used even after 50 years.
@TVwriter23 Quite right and also film is a future proof format. I wonder where all these different video formats will be in 50 years? Not that I'll be here though to worry about it.
@PooCrizzap Damn right! However, are they "trying" to say film is dead, or did they actually say it? Hmmmm. Do these people perhaps have a speech impediment? I wish they'd just get off the damn fence. Either SAY film is dead, or say it isnt. All this silly "trying to say film is dead" is a real pain in the rectum. Hate those goddamned speech impediment buttclowns! JUST SAY IT!
@eggbertsmith ....If you're honestly one of those english majors that have no skills but english and you're trying to show me your lack of security in this comment to seriously make fun of my lack of correct wording of a sentence, then you sir are the buttclown.
People need to stop trying to say speech impediments are not serious! They also need to stop tryin to say, film is dead. Know wot else dey need to stop tryin to says? Guess? Anyone? Anyone? Beuller? Odd that you'd assume you were being singled out as the buttclown. Perhaps a re-read would help? Reading comprehension.....is the new black. My major was film, you naughty rabbit, not English. English majors are buffoons. Now hit those books before it's too late, you adorable ass-bandit you.
yea no kidding.. for 400 you get what you pay for.. besides. I couldn't be happier about it. although the worst thing about it is the fast frame rate on these are totally unreliable. go past 30fps and the camera gate and film guides totally freak out.. and it causes the jumps you see.. oh well.. i no longer have this camera. I wish i had kept it.. the low cost of digital and 35mm adapters got me to sell it..
Great thanks for sharing your homemovie with us.We do not have snow like this in Australia so it's pleasant to see a landscape thats not flat , bone dry or on fire.I also have a K3 and a Pathe webo thats 16mm but standard .A EL Bolex thats super 16.The Bolex is by far the best and has the sharpest lens. But the K3
is a great budget buy and good to learn with.
Just with K3s make sure you get a good one.
You state that you also have a HVX P2.I also have one ,but I much prefer film it has more res
Where do you process your 16mm here in Aus? I'm thinking of buying a K3, because I love the look of film, digital just doesn't measure up, but probably not much point buying it if I can't process it.
It's difficult to tell here, but how bad is the registration problem on this camera? When you shoot single perf, there's less stability when the film locks in position for each frame.
All super 16 cameras have this problem, I was just wondering how noticeable it is with the K3.
it´s nice. the high speed is flicking a little bit. my camera do the same thing. but the k3 is a very low cost choise to shoot something in motion picture,. the super 16 is great.

I suppose that was taken with the stock zoom. Not bad for hand held spur of the moment and the wide screen is worth the price of admission.
Try to do some well lighted static portrait shots to really test the focus and stability on these things.
I find these K 3's to be a bit of a pain but for Super 16 under $400.00 on E bay what can you say?
