  • Always nice to watch this video again

  • Nice! I love the way film looks.

  • i love love real filming . 16 mm rock , great movie!!!

  • hey man, it has been a long time since i saw this film test. have you done any other works on film? or u just move on to dslrs? i have to say, film looks so much better, and i love this clip very much!

  • @timzoneking Hey! Actually I shot a roll of 50D on my bolex last weekend. I'll post a video very soon :) thanks!

  • i truly enjoy this. thank you for sharing!

  • it's not quite in focus. what camera did you filmed on ?

  • @GadgetVision

It's a very old Russian Camera called a K3, not the best but it's fun to experiment with.

  • @robinleveille220988 i see it has m42 mount. it's easy to convert to a 18mm canon lens. it has a good picture overall

    .

  • @GadgetVision Maybe, someone is selling an adapter here in Ottawa for 8$ on Kijiji lol.

  • @robinleveille220988 it's something that i would take advantage of. i'd wish to see movies with that combination.

  • I know most beginning filmmakers have little money, but i'd urge them to save up for a decent 16mm than anything digital. Film will always be taken more seriously. Sometimes you can make digital look filmic, but film always looks like film. Sure, it's pricer, but that's where real movies are made. Even the Red One often (unless in the hands of Peter jackson or such) looks videoy if not done right.

  • @altermann1ify It's more important who is behind the camera than what format you use.

  • What lents did you used to keep it focus all the way she is running at you?

  • @HyeHittler316 I used the stock Meteor zoom lens.

  • pretty awesome video! where'd you get it telecined?

  • @12ampvacuum I got it telecined at Technicolor in Toronto Canada

  • The truth and beauty of film remind me of a quote in Shakespeare's Henry IV by Falstaff: "Dost thou hear Hal? Never call a true piece of gold a counterfeit. Thou art essentially mad (made) without seeming so." No matter how hard digital tries it will never be a true piece of gold. It will never be essentially made without seeming so.

  • Film is amazing, and your dog too haha

  • how many minutes one reel make

  • @SunnyShawFilms about 3 minutes. depends what frame rate you choose.

  • i love this, it is well done and I very much enjoyed the soundtrack to it. good work!

  • Before I watched this video for the past couple years I kept thinking "Someday I'm gonna make all of my movies digital to cut costs". But after watching this I think you have rejuvenated my want for someday doing everything in film. Thank you very much :)

  • Good Work. Its kinda sad so many youngster don't want to touch film!

  • @ControlofMoney I would love to try it. Just don't know where to begin really. Plus, it seems the processing costs a fortune for 16mm.

  • how much did your k3 run you? did it already have the super16 gate in? motorized or hand-cranked?

  • @ItsPenguinBob it was hand cranked and the gate I bought on ebay for cheap. itsvery easy to modify. I could of modified my existing gate with some patience.

  • @robinleveille220988 Hey I was just wondering, to modify it do you just basically remove the gate and file the opening wider to the left side?

  • @helloimelliott Basically you could, but I suggest having it done by a machinist. the gate needs to be exactly 0.488. and it needs to be very polished to avoid scratching the film.

  • So this is how my red scaret 16 mm will look like. =) Nice.

  • @Joni0001984 lol well its going to look allot better thats for sure! your lucky!

  • @robinleveille220988

I have to save up for it first. But I guess I have a few years at least til its released. =)

  • @Joni0001984 your in a dream world if you think the scarlet is going to match the look of 16mm motion picture film. Your scarlet will look like video, like every other digital camera out there.

The scarlet doesn't have 16 stops of dynamic range, grain, gate regulation movement, the unique look of kodak vision 3.

the scarlet will be GOOD, theres no doubt about it. but film and digital are 2 entirely different things, with 2 entirely different looks.

  • @Bluestarcinema True, not 16, but 18 stops of DR if you use the HDR option which they're including.

  • I wish modern Digital Cameras had a mode like this to make it look 16mm because this looks sweet

  • Hey wats the song????????

  • This looks great! I have the same camera and I'm going to do some test shots soon. There's just one thing I need to make sure of. When estimating where the super 16 frame is, do you add to the left or right of the viewfinder? I'm thinking it's the left. It's tough to focus the K3 on the fly like you did, I thought your shots turned out well considering that.

  • @zj05 lol never mind, it must be the right side.

  • @zj05 ehmm a little more to the left actually. but don't zoom out all the way with the stock lens its going to vignette a little if you do :)

  • @robinleveille220988

Thanks! I was confusing myself. I'm aware of the vignetting, I think it begins to appear around 27mm and below. It really is a fun camera to play with, can't beat the price. Maybe this is obvious to some, but I found it much easier to focus the stock lens by zooming all the way in (creating a shallow dof), then zooming back out to the desired focal length. Anyway, awesome vid! Your newer stuff is great too.

  • @zj05 try to frame your subjects a little more to the right :)

  • where did you get your film? I can't find any double perf 16mm in colour anywhere. I just got a K3 and still haven't tested it yet.

  • hey! I got my film in super 16mm so single perf film at Kodak Canada in Toronto. it was like 65$ i think... they have loads of film type you can choose from. hope this helps..

  • nice test... very charming :o)

  • what is the song???

  • what is the name ov the song

  • where'd you get this developed in Toronto?

    And are they reasonable?

  • I used to have a K-3 but I messed up the viewfinder. There is something irresistible about the look of film.

  • I really liked this, it made me smile :) Nice work!

  • film is great! people need to stop trying to say film is dead

  • Until they can replicate it with digital equipment. Which they cant and Idk if they will.

  • Digital is cool and all, but it doesn't have anything on film. Especially the fact that once those cameras die they just die. Film cameras can be used even after 50 years.

  • @TVwriter23 Quite right and also film is a future proof format. I wonder where all these different video formats will be in 50 years? Not that I'll be here though to worry about it.

  • @PooCrizzap Damn right! However, are they "trying" to say film is dead, or did they actually say it? Hmmmm. Do these people perhaps have a speech impediment? I wish they'd just get off the damn fence. Either SAY film is dead, or say it isnt. All this silly "trying to say film is dead" is a real pain in the rectum. Hate those goddamned speech impediment buttclowns! JUST SAY IT!

  • @eggbertsmith ....If you're honestly one of those english majors that have no skills but english and you're trying to show me your lack of security in this comment to seriously make fun of my lack of correct wording of a sentence, then you sir are the buttclown.

  • People need to stop trying to say speech impediments are not serious! They also need to stop tryin to say, film is dead. Know wot else dey need to stop tryin to says? Guess? Anyone? Anyone? Beuller? Odd that you'd assume you were being singled out as the buttclown. Perhaps a re-read would help? Reading comprehension.....is the new black. My major was film, you naughty rabbit, not English. English majors are buffoons. Now hit those books before it's too late, you adorable ass-bandit you.

  • @eggbertsmith umm. because your statement made no sense, it is invalid

  • oh how i love film. film. film. film.

  • I suppose that was taken with the stock zoom. Not bad for hand held spur of the moment and the wide screen is worth the price of admission.

Try to do some well lighted static portrait shots to really test the focus and stability on these things.

I find these K 3's to be a bit of a pain but for Super 16 under $400.00 on E bay what can you say?

  • yea no kidding.. for 400 you get what you pay for.. besides. I couldn't be happier about it. although the worst thing about it is the fast frame rate on these are totally unreliable. go past 30fps and the camera gate and film guides totally freak out.. and it causes the jumps you see.. oh well.. i no longer have this camera. I wish i had kept it.. the low cost of digital and 35mm adapters got me to sell it..

  • muy buen test ¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • This footage is amazing. It's uplifting as it is, especially with the music.

  • Congratulations!!! Very good footage.

  • :) ..

  • Did you use the stock lens or a 35mm still lens?

  • I used the stock lens.

  • great vid!

  • What kind of film did you use on this film?

  • Great thanks for sharing your homemovie with us.We do not have snow like this in Australia so it's pleasant to see a landscape thats not flat , bone dry or on fire.I also have a K3 and a Pathe webo thats 16mm but standard .A EL Bolex thats super 16.The Bolex is by far the best and has the sharpest lens. But the K3

is a great budget buy and good to learn with.

Just with K3s make sure you get a good one.

You state that you also have a HVX P2.I also have one ,but I much prefer film it has more res

  • Where do you process your 16mm here in Aus? I'm thinking of buying a K3, because I love the look of film, digital just doesn't measure up, but probably not much point buying it if I can't process it.

  • Deluxe labs

    MELBOURNE 15-19 Gordon St Elstenwick

    (03) 9528-6188

SYDNEY 706 Mowbray Rd Lane Cove

    (02) 9429-5400

Here are 2 I'm sure there are more only neg processing here in Oz.

  • This one was done at Technicolor Toronto. : )

  • thanks for the scenary. helps me decide what to shoot with...

  • Beautiful footage Robin.

It's difficult to tell here, but how bad is the registration problem on this camera? When you shoot single perf, there's less stability when the film locks in position for each frame.

All super 16 cameras have this problem, I was just wondering how noticeable it is with the K3.

    Cheers

  • you rock Robin!

  • that footage in the snow looks beautiful.

do you remember the film stock if you dont mind me asking?

  • Vision 2 7212 100T , thanks!

  • is there a good link to find out where I can rent a super 16mm camera in my area?

  • awesome footage, i'm thinking of buying new K-3 camera. But i also consider Bell&Howell 70, which one is better?

  • soooo how in the world did you film with it snowing out?

  • Ah looks great, and on a K3! I think this just inspired me to shoot on 16 rather than P2 cards.

  • haha yea man i got the HVX200 too! i just got the M2 for it and its pretty close to 16 i must say! minus the cost of transfer.

  • Was this shot on reversal? what kind of film did you use?

  • i whant your camera plz:) cand you send it to sweden?

  • yayy its me! :)

  • can anyone tell me the name of that beautiful song ?

  • stars- on peak hill

  • Awesome man. How did you edit this?

  • final cut pro. Telecined by the folks at technicolor in Toronto

  • super 16, perfect storytelling platform

  • great job, the footage look awesome

  • This is beautiful man.

    I wish I had your knowledge/equipment.

Super 16 of the snow just looks stunning

  • Can you zoom with this camera in super 16mm?

Also did you notice any kind of permanent scratch at the right side of the image?

  • 2:10!! (head explodes) Thats awesome! In this size that is not any different than a 35mm clip from a movie!!

  • sweet

  • Pretty good, man.

  • is that super 16 or regular 16mm?????

  • awesome work. If I might ask, how do you go about converting 16mm film to digital?

  • o.0 awesome!! i cant wait to get my K3 conversion finished, where did you have the film processed?

  • Hi, I really enjoyed the footage. I am wanting to buy a super 16mm k3 camera, and would like to know what lenses you used. Thanks.

  • Oh my god please tell me what the song is called!

  • its called "On peak hill" by "The Stars"

  • whats the song

  • amazing, just absolutely amazing, I have the K3 camera myself, a brand new make from 1985, can't wait to take it out this summer

  • I love s16 :D great job

  • it´s nice. the high speed is flicking a little bit. my camera do the same thing. but the k3 is a very low cost choise to shoot something in motion picture,. the super 16 is great.

    salute U.

  • good work. You have good material to work with there!

  • Very nice work. Great music choice. :)

  • I loved it!

Film just has a look all of its own.

I've just shot some test film on a Bolex RX4 which I'll put on utube after its telecine'd.

Keep shooting and putting on line!

    Chris

  • Even though the focus is quite soft throughout, I have to say I love the look of it.

Congrats, did you do the S16 coversion yourself?

    Also, what stock is it?

  • hey ehm yea im still learning the whole depth of film, its quite hard focusing when the stock lens has to be zoomed in to cover the whole super16 frame. ah well ill get used to it. and no i got the conversion done before i got it

  • oh and the stock was Vision 2 7212 100T

  • yes it was

  • Is this all shot with the Meteor zoom?
