It is not twice as a good as the Sony A1U cam that I use for Video Journalism reporting. But it is TWICE THE PRICE! Hope to see more contenders with these features as the native FCP is nice and also the 3 CCD. Other than those - nothing else improves on the A1U for light HD pro cam.
@vizeds Currently at B&H (New York, U.S.A) the HVR-A1U costs $2.1K, the GY-HM100U costs $2.8K. For the extra $700 you get tapeless recording onto cheap media, higher bitrate than HDV, 50Hz/60hz capability right out of the box and better manual focusing tools. Or you can get one from eBay for around $2K in great condition.
Is there any way you can hook up a wired remote such as a varizoom? I like to be able to control the camera (at least zoom and start stop) from a tripod with out touching the camera body.
Nice video! I personally use Sony Vegas Pro 8 going 9, and this camera would be the absolute ultimate camera if it wasn't stuck to FCP, what type of mov files does it record? are they the normal HD mov files? because Sony Vegas Pro can import almost any format including H.264 and hidef Mov.
@djlobb If you did not listed for what Derek said, then download the brochure and read for yourself. The camcorder shoots either in MOV or in MP4, and the latter can be easily converted to MXF with free Sony software. Vegas 8 works fine with MXF, Vegas 9 and 10 can edit MP4 natively, no conversion needed.
Nice review. Can anyone tell me how the quality looks on this camera. Does it really have a Pro HD look/feel or does it still have an HD Camcorder look/feel?
If my memory serves me well, i remember you can use the rocker as well as the manual zoom ring at the same time. there is of course also the constant zoom behind the LCD screen as well that works but speed was not adjustable which is sad i must add. cos it was way to fast for my liking default and sudden.
i'm looking forward to seeing the footage too. interesting review although i'd like to hear about what it's like to shot with. how easy is it to focus in manual, what is the low light capability, how easy are the manual controls to use etc
it is nice to handle but focus can be a little challenging as the LCD screen is not as good as would have hoped. even though it has the patented focus assist, it is very very different from the GY-HM700.manual controls are very easy to use as you will notice in the video all the manual controls have individual physical buttons so there is not necessity for touch screen settings etc. low light IMO not great at all owing to smaller size sensors.
thanks for the quick response. i'm disappointed to hear that focus is tricky as that seriously limits it's usability. is it easier with the viewfinder? is there another zoom adjustment button instead of the ring? anyway, thanks again. i'm off to check out the images!
yes i know the LoLux which is IMO like 64DB of HYPERGAIN and unless you enjoy having a super bright and super noisy looking video i render this feature hopeless IMO.
how you like the SD recording experience with HM100 compare to tape recording cam? how's the workflow compare to tape recording? don't you think tape suck? don't you think sony should go with this? i mean record to SD to native QuickTime file up to 35mbps,i really hope sony and canon can go with this so we can have more choice.

The cameras are the same price (both are around $3400. Why do you say it is twice the price as the Sony A1U?

A really cool camera, but it costs 3000 € bisch I find too expensive to buy because, and the Panasonic AG-HMC151 is good to (3200 €).
Could you maybe even more times a video cam to do what it can and how it looks?

It comes with a wireless remote I see.

Derek,
Can you explain the Focus or Zoom switch? Does it mean if you are zooming you cannot control the focus? And if you are focusing you cannot zoom ?

yes.... one function at any one time. cannot do manual zoom and manual focus as there is only one physical ring.

Derek, thanks for the review. Can you do motorised zoom and manual focus at the same time?
