I have no clue how large of bike you are riding but on my 600 I leave it in first gear around 35-40 m.p.h. release the throttle all the way and then roll into it full throttle position while pulling up on the bars. This will lead into a smoother less all over the place wheelie and is also easy to shift through the gears. I have had my 600 pull up into a wheelie at around 50 m.p.h. and I set it down at 147 m.p.h by using this motion.
i dont know were u got the idea that it will wreck the clutch, i was clutching wheelies on mine for months and months, nothing ever gone wrong, it only fucks up if ure draging it while doing burnouts.
I've never done a "clutch pop" wheelie on purpose...but I would have held it in 5th at probably 40mph more than you.
My pals all stay back popping wheelies at 20-40mph while I'm carrying 80 around a swooping bend getting 30% lean.
Stunting's for FAGGOTS,
trying to be Rossi of the Road is 100000x more satisfying
