I play men's fast pitch and I can say honestly I think I would hit a monster shot of this guy his motion is to much like a side ARM guy in baseball making it much easier to see the ball
He's throwing like that, because this is what's known as "Modified Softball or Modified Fastpitch". It's an intermediate version of the sport... ie. It's not Slowpitch, but a full windmill Fastpitch delivery is illegal in Modified. Check it out n the ISF (International Softball Federation) Pitching Rules.
Lol... Guys... Learn your science -.-" of course throwing overhand may result in like a 3mph advantage, but it isn't much. You don't see many sub guys because the mechanics are different, which is the main factor for speed change. It is also harder to hit a sub because the ball is rising, and it is different from the overhand. Not many throw from the sub which in a sense is unorthodox. Also yes, science has proven that softballs are harder to hit(if thrown at the same speed). It's because the p
wow big woop a softball is way harder to hit proved by espn.you can do many more styles and a baseball just goes done u cant bring it up like a rise ball the only way is if u throw it high then it wont be a strike just look up arizonas state universities pitcher btw they just won the world series
@dolphinplayerof2010 uhm.... you didnt get what i was saying.... prettyavenue was saying that this pitching style was legal for abseball. What I was saying was that you can throw faster in baseball by throwing overhand. You can't use a softball in baseball so really your comment makes no sence whatsoever...
@dolphinplayerof2010 so why would someone use this pitching style in baseball if they can throw much faster throwing overhand? that's all I wanted to say. I didn't need a hater on my back because he misread my comment.
@gak831 the only reason why hes stil pitching somewhat fast, is because he steps back, and only goes from up to underhand, he doesnt do a full motion soo?
@prettyavenue A rise ball can be thrown to cross the plate at any height in the strike-zone. Yes it's most commonly thrown at the top of the zone as to draw a batter into swinging where they favour their power (at chest height). A low rise is a great pitch to throw. To the batter it will often seem as the ball is going to end up low, so no initial attempt is made to hit it, and by the time it's begins to kick up into the bottom of the zone it's often too late to be hit or to be hit effectively.
this delivery is very, very, rare. I haven't seen this since I was a little boy in the Bronx watching my dad play in the factory league. The old Cubans and Puerto Ricans from the '40's and 50's used this delivery: a submarine delivery. If you look at the old Brakettes and other females from that time they used slingshot delivery, nowadays, everyone uses windmill. Wow, real rare.
He is pitching very old school style. This is way the they threw back in the day before the windmill style was invented. What a man loses in speed he makes up with much greater movement. I first saw this watching some old movies along time ago.
hmm talk about illegal pitching. thats like softball not baseball and it like half of softball cuz in softball that would even be illegal. (cuz your not doing the full windup)
@MissySmith94 if you wanna get techincal the only illegal part (possibly) is that he doesn't start with two feet on the rubber and he steps back, which may be legal in that league. There aren't any rules saying you have to use a windmill pitch, sling shot or slow pitch IS legal in fast pitch softball.

No way partner, not even close. Every ptch should be called a BALL. He is simply turning in his shoulder and submarining the pitch. This is allowed in baseball, but no way is it allowed in softball.

- The long step backwards is illegal according to ASA rules.
- At 0.29 you can see the hips are hardly square to the plate but this is subjective to the umpires call.
- At 1.32 the hips are square to the plate but the front foot is clearly crossing over, again illegal by ASA standards but subjective to the ump's call.
I give credit for getting away with it all and competing.
@customfrank yet we see 12 year olds do it every single year during the little league world series... stop bitching and grow some balls... 90 isnt that crazy fast
lets see how a softball stud does against a 95 MPH fastball followed by a 80 MPH change up....cant see the first one and wont swing at the second, shut the fuck up
or for guys who like an actual competitive athletic game, not pitch...miss...pitch....pop fly hit or out. Softball is sooo much more fast paced than baseball. Plus baseball guys can't hit softball pitches usually =]
what makes this guy difficult to hit is how he diguises the ball until it's actually out of his hand. not easy to pick up on, which is why u see some ugly swings
as far as the step back is concerned, each league is different. many leagues in Quebec and some in Ontario allow it. I'm in new brunswick and I'm not allowed a step back. I must say your style impresses me. I may throw harder than u, but I use a much bigger backswing to do it and I don't disguise my change up as well as u.
here in canada this style is called orthodox. why I don't know because its extremely unorthodox. it differs from slingshot because the hips have to stay square to the plate and no elbow bend is allowed unless you release the ball inside your wrist (like tossing a frisbee) to those who say you'd rip this guy I say that it's entirely possible you would because this style of softball was designed to bring hitting back into the game while still providing a challenge. this guy would surprise u.
This is modified pitch softball. Pitcher appears good except he should be called illegal because his first movement with his left foot is backwards. Both feet must be in contact with the rubber.
i pitch like that for my college girls fastpitch softball team... I'm left handed, only i don't turn my body like he does. i just slingshot it... its like the end part of a windmill pitch... i still pull it back and then whip it like a regular fastpitch softball pitcher... its accurate as hell and fools the batters and its fast.. my arm never hurts or get sore and i never need ice after games... i've been pitching this way for 3 years... and i started playing when i got to college in 2004
Submarine pitching style, although given the pitcher's arm angle, pitching like that for a whole game would put a lot of stress on the rotator cuff or elbow since it isn't purely underhand.
It was called sling shot when I picthed in the 50s 60s and 70s Herb Dudley and Weldon Haney two Hall of Famers both had there best days with the clear water Bombers. DudleY till hold the record for strikinmg out 55 batters in 21 INNING GAME
When I release the ball, my right foot is still on the pitching plate. My pitching motion require to regain my balance after the pitch by making a little step to my right with my right foot. I would fall on my right side if i don't do it. The evidence is on the video: pause it at the moment of release of the ball and you're going to see my right foot on the plate. Once the ball is release, the pitcher do whatever he wants he doesn't gain any advantage because he doesn't have the ball anymore.
