@buggeazy102 Actually they couldn't "easily" wipe him out, as season 3 proved. The Barksdales were on the decline and Marlo had the power. Besides, like Avon said "there's always gonna be a Marlo". Guys like him, talking don't work. It's like the government trying to negotiate with terrorists or some shit.

@buggeazy102 What are you talkin about? Avon's muscle was weak as shit by Season 3. Why you think Stringer went to Marlo trying to work things out? Cuz he kne they couldn't step to Marlo with the bullshit muscle they had at that point. Other than Slim Charles, they had no reliable muscle. Look when Slim, Cutty, and them other dudes tried to hit a Marlo corner and got lit up. Joe had no muscle either, thats why he kept beggin Marlo to join the co-op to run off those NYC boys.
@Antrizzle2009 joe knows avon wont help him in that way with new york but but marlo yess cause hes interfearing with both sides they have no choice but to gang up on marlo avon can easly kill marlo but he wanted no trouble at the time he wants to do his time the same way he killed his boy stringer he can do to marlo if he wants

@buggeazy102 Ok but what you're talkin about is Season 3. By the time Season 4 rolls around, Slim is working for Joe. At that point Marlo is in the co-op and virtually running it. Why you think despite the fact that Marlo was taking over the independent corners that Slim was supplying, Slim ain't do shit about it? Peep that scene where Bodie is bitching to Slim about this. @seekisforme5 Yeah for real. Stringer was from the old school where there was a level of respect and honor amongst thieves. Marlo is from our time now. No respect, rebellion, and a 'king for a day' mentallity. Marlo represents a generation with no hope for tomorrow.

For all of y'all calling Marlo smart must not have actually watch the seasons unfold *SMH* If anything Marlo was the lucky one. Remember how the Barksdale crew got hit Avon got locked up they lost their product. That allowed Marlo to take over the corners. No one knew him but when his name rang out he was marked. They had him dead at the end of this season. But we all know how it played out.
can someone explain to me why Marlo says "tell our ppl to tool up" after the convo with Stringer bell. strings came with a offer and now Marlo wants to tool up (go to war) WHY
@warriorclan because he rejected the peace offer meaning theyre not neutral, theyre not friends, they are at war now. So tool up cause avon will come after them.
Just to think, the only reason why Marlo got to the top was because Stringer ratted out Avon's plan to decimate Marlo and crew to Bunny Colvin. Stringer really did help pave the way for Marlo to come out on top.
@Mxyzptlk562 Very true because Avon and his men was going to take out the young boy. I mean did you see the heat that they had in the room when McNulty came busting in. Not only did Stringer snitch he taught him the game as well. That is a shame.
@tnauls exactly! I wonder why people who consider themselves fans of the show never realized that. I own the whole collection and still watch it every now and then. Marlo was cold and had a lot of heart but he knew that if he was patient Avon n Stringer would fall at there own behest.
First i never understood why marlo would choose to go to war rather than consider stringers offer but looking back i realize marlo knew what he was doing, he was probably plotting to take out stringer and avon and take their spot in the co-op
@username198924 from that meeting he saw the weakness and bullshit of stringer right away... Marlo was a very smart dude people don't credit him for that...
Haha String fucked up. He cant be the King with his suit wearing business man shit. All Marlo took from this was you weak ass nigger - ''Chris tell our people to tool up.'' That line made me laugh hard cos I was watching it like String your messin up. Thrice Stringer let Avon down, Omars mum on a church Sunday, his weak talk with Marlo and being an informant.
Shame, if Mr Bell didnt snitch Avon wouldav had Marlo and still been running the show. As he says the game is the game. String = fail.
@Mallice88 Stringer didn't want to be the king. He didn't care about his name ringing out. He wanted to get out of the game and live a comfortable life. His problem was that he tried to bring Avon with him, but Avon was still on that kiddie gangsta shit.
String was on some grown man shit. What does a nigga over 30 want to do with holding corners and having shootouts? If all you have to do is finance a package to see profit, why fight over corners?
@mankyller I agree .. BUT Stringer's ambition was not built for this trade. He wanted to legitamize and was doing so, but this "peace" talk was not going to work. Avon had a 6th sense .. he knew war equaled money .. He new marlo wasnt going to cave .. he new he needed t enforce hs reputaion
@hghost08 Everyone else in baltimore were doing great, hell, by the end of the wire the cops STILL had no idea about the new day co-op. Yeah, people fucked up but if it really wasnt for marlo, everybody would be makin paper under the radar. Shit honestly just happened, marlo was just too ruthless and he did fall pretty damn fast compared to Barksdale. The reason why they couldnt catch marlo faster was due to the shutting down of major crimes. Marlo woulda been easy as fuck.
Also Marlo got lucky because the towers got demolished and the Barksdale crew had to take their business elsewhere, and Marlo had the homefield advantage there. Not too mention Marlo was a phone call away from being dead.
Prop Joe broke down the relationship between Stringer/Avon perfectly in Season 2. Stringer was the business man and Avon was the soldier, the guy you wanted on your team when shit hit the fan. Stringer was too smart for his own good, while Avon was too prideful for his own good. That was their downfall, if they could have controlled both of those aspects of their personality they would have controlled B-More until they gave up the game.
Marlo was lucky period. Barksdale and Bell fell over mixed vision. There was no one left. Barksdale crew had them in hiding and cornered at the end of Season 3. They only came out of hiding when Barksdale got popped.
The Barksdale Empire was weak in the 2nd season much more than the 3rd. For all this talk about their "weakness", Marlo and Avon were trading kills throughout the entire season. Marlo would've died at the rim shop on the last episode of season 3 if McNulty hadn't come to arrest Avon and his boys.
Stringer met Marlo here because he was about business, not gangster bullshit. In the end, Stringer and Avon brought themselves down. Marlo just happened to be there afterward to pick up the pieces.
This was the turning point in the game. Marlo sat back and listened to Stringer and realized that they were weak if they were willing to talk instead of take him out. He saw his opportunity to strike while they had their mind on negotiating.
Should've listened to String, it ain't about the corners, the beefing, dropping bodies and bringing the police into it,its about product. Share and share alike, everyone gets a piece of the action and you launder the profit so it's in your hand clean through legit business. All these dealers want their "name to ring out" and don't wanna see- big picture.
"baltimore has had its share of smart players- melvin, big head, peanut.... but as soon as their names rang out, the feds were on 'em. The Govt. doesnt want u organized and legit, it wants u scrapping and scrapeing and killing each other on the corners over some bullshit." string saw a young avon in marlo and was trying to lay it out for him but he was too hardheaded and power hungry. even though string had his faults, i like what he was trying to do.
@Murphs56 Did you watch the show? Marlo got a hell of a lot further in the street and/or the corporate game than Stringer ever did. If you saw how he Alpha maled Chris (who was on the Omar or Brother Mouzone level assassin wise), you know he did something(s) in the past to make people just straight fear and therefore folow him. Funny shit like this always comes up about Malro but never about Avon who never "put in work" on the show once. Slim Charles would be boss if size meant anything.
Slim Charles and to a lesser extent Fat-Face Rick technically were the bosses at the end of The Wire. They were the only ones who haven't got pinched by the law or killed in the streets, and both were still active in the drug trade in their respective roles in the Co-op.
@Jouhanimou Sorry I didn't spell Napoleon right excuse me. I actually with youtube would implement a spell check so this whole grammar thing wouldn't be stressed by people all the time just cuz people type fast. Anyway, I was merely using him as an example that you don't need size to have people follow you. Not if you're a motivator of men which is what both people in question were.
@Murphs56 Marlo ws a G though. Stringer was a business man. He was meant to be working with the 1% in Wall Street.. He thought he could handle both and paid the price.
@Murphs56 shiiiiit - Stringer=as avon says his heart bleed green= stringer smart, and got skills again (as avon says) but he aint built for the darker side of the game (street war, taking a life indiscriminatly, outside of ordering wallace's hit, and omars gay lover/stickup boy to be hit, and obviously de'angelo stringer aint had much else done, cept get ripped off by Clay Davis "rain made you" lol..stringer a good character, but marlo a sociopath...strong, takes respect like a rapist takes puss
@Murphs56 marlo (as he says when he walks out of the room) he knows barksdale weak as hell at this p oint, main muscle behind bars, avon loosing connects, stringer "reaching out" to marlo to make him understand, the co-op peaceful resolutions type shit, marlo aint want nothing to do with that he looks up to stringer and in his mind thinks "this nigga loosing all his shit, im SOON to be the next king" stringer in a way is a nice big pussy cat, in a game full of tigers - string CAN be ruthless but
@Murphs56 often times is more worried about economics, dollar signs, and "real estate" not the turf wars, personal grudges, and "our names ringing out in the street corners" we've all seen several dozen clips of avon and stringer talking and stringer always trying to go AGAINST war, and turf-war, and bloodshed, and laying "low" and playing it "passive" so in a way...stringer is the perfect target for MARLO to take down...if omar/bow-tie (brother mouzone) hadnt taken out stringer..marlo's ppl
@Murphs56 now on stringers defense, hes got the intelligence (for money management) and the EXPERIENCE (being hes older) but marlos=thirsty, cold, soft spoken, reserved, came UP from the streets, done actual hits himself, aint afraid of death, doesnt show emotions, hes climbin to the top + has more muscle (AT THIS POINT/this SCENE) then barskdale..barksdale=tryna (at this point) be about peace, and keep their corners/pit/terrace and money they can..and get as many ppl as possible to join the
@Murphs56 new-day co-op, but marlo basically (as he says in the end of this clip) "chris, tell our people to tool up" duh...he knows what CAN and will BE done...take out a few more barksdale soldiers, take out stringer, avon locked up, (back and fowarth with bail reviews, postponements, etc, etc) barksdale=the demise, marlo KNOWS the future, ...and its him ...so nah i disagree while stringer deserves credit...by this point he himself is a sinking ship, marlos a metaphorical tidal wave coming
@Murphs56 Cause size dont matter when you got a loaded 45 or AK pointed in somebody face ready to pull the trigger like marlo is for any reason small or big...LOL
Great show. It was heartbreaking watching Stringer go though at the end of season 3 or 4. He was definitely the smartest character on the show I mean he was pulling in more clean money than the dirty money that was on the street. However nobody could reform an illegal industry. It is the reason that a mob boss after 10 years of strong rule has a organization that falls apart because there is no trust.
In Season 3 Marlo tends to dress like the corner boys and hoppers. Oversized t-shirts and those stupid headbands and wrist bands. But if you notice, starting in season 4 after Avon's crew is out of the picture and Marlo basically owns the westside, he starts dressing like Avon, polo shirts an shit. Could just be new wardrobe people or whatever but it seems to me he is emulating Avon
Stringer was always thinkin beyond the shoot-em up wars over the corners...only problem was, he underestimated Marlo's desire to want to run everything, and step on anybody he had to along the way...I think Marlo also knew that eventually Stringer/Avon's philosophical differences would lead to their empire's downfall, which it did
@TheDoogies3 Problem was, Avon and Stringer weren't used to dealing with these types of people. The people they delt with lived by a code, which Marlo didn't have. Even Omar had a code that they understood, but Marlo and his people...just kill everybody in the way of the crown, whether they deserved it or not. Like Snoop said, "deserve got nothing to do with it..."
AND, the real melvin williams is an ACTOR on the show! He plays the church man from the later seasons. That is actually the druglorg avon was based on. How funny is that
41:00-45:00 shows what a guy like Marlo is all about....If you get to close to me you are a threat.....hence at the end of this scene,...."Chris, tell are people to tool up"...
in my opinion marlos greatest weakness was how fast he was to stack bodies, like the security guard and the delivery lady at andres shop, when you stack so many bodies over bullshit reasons, it always comes back to get you
It's ironic how Stringer talks about how being 'smart' isn't enough. And yet ironically enough it was Stringer's itch to be a smart businessman that lead to his downfall. At the end of the day he was too smart for his own good and he got caught slippin
Marlo was ruthless but he was losing his war against Avon. If it wasn't for the police raiding Avon's hideout Marlo would have been a dead man. The only way Marlo became the kingpin was Avon was out of the way.
@lorenzo12ify Are you serious??? Marlo outsmarted Avon the whole way thru the war. Avon only had one real shot at the end when Slim was sitting on the Rim shop. Marlo shot Avon, killed 5 of his soldiers, and that slut Devonne. The war wasnt even close.
I should have said about what stringer says about these dealers from the past names been talked about alot and the feds have been invovled thats why (SPOILER) At the end of the series he asks them young dealers on the corner if they know who is is by face but they don't they only know marlo by name and influence
hard headed, yea... faggot, punk, bitch are non of the wrd's that describe him tho'... where was he by the end of this war??? im a barksdale crew fan myself, but marlo won plain simple n' he did it like a G...
Faggot punk bitch? O Really? He usurped a larger drug cartel's position, and managed to eventually take over their territory. He had no qualms about eliminating the competition, as evidenced by numerous bodies discovered in the abandoned houses. He eliminated Prop Joe and took over the connect, thus becoming the most prominent drug Kingpin the city. Realizing all that, what gives you the impression that he was "faggot punk bitch?"
@heflys20 - his insecurities. He tried so hard to prove he was the shit. It just wasn't natural for him. He was smart. But he was like a bill gates turned drug dealer. A nerd in the game.
I see it as being ambitious, not insecure. An insecure individual wouldn't have taken over the drug game in such a short amount of time. Furthermore, half the individuals in the show were concerned with their reputation; from Avon to Omar. How can you hope to thrive if you don't have a reputation? And, apparently, his behavior was natural, as evidenced by his final scene in the show.
This was a more iconic scene than was at first realized. Stringer was a great manager in the Barksdale crew but he didn't 'read between the lines' the way Avon did. Avon knew Marlo's heart and what he was dealing with - that there would never be a truce or a 'deal'...
lol notice Stringer tugged on Marlo's short sleeve...then afterwards shrugged it off at the end of this scene. Basically wasted Marlo's valuable time.
Stringer seriously messed up here. By going to Marlo with a peace offer, he let Marlo know that the Barksdales didn't have any muscle. Marlo knew that if the Barksdales were really strong they would have taken him out rather than talking.
That's true. In an earlier scene when Stringer was talking to Avon about upturns and downturns in the "market", Avon stopped him and said "this ain't about your business school, this is that OTHER thing". Avon knows that there's always going to be a Marlo, and that there's only one way to deal with him. This is a characteristic of the institution or "Game" they're a part of, and not even Stringer can change that. Prop Joe later tried to "civilize" the man himself, and it cost him dearly.
@downtownclaydavis - Very true. No matter how civilized you try to make it, its still the streets in the end. And you will always have someone on the outside of your little "organized world" thats looking to take over. They don't want apart of it. They want the whole thing. And ain't but 1 way to deal with that kind of mentality. Gotta put them away for good.
You are forgetting the fact that Stringer pulled out of every corner in Baltimore. Everybody already knew that the Barksdale crew was weak. They didn't have any corners! How'd you think he got those corners? Barksdale was dying.
Call it a crisis of leadership.
What stringer was doing here was trying to educate Marlo. Telling him as soon as you become the king, they take you down. Better to just deal without dropping bodies. That it's smarter to be low-key. Marlo didn't listen.
That's true. You only do such moves if you have the muscle and seek to lure the enemy into a battle they wouldn't be poised to win. Stringer didn't study his business shit hard enough. Anywhere in those classes, you get a copy of Sun Tzu's "Art Of War" that deals with such precious little jewels. But hey, he's applied Robert's Rules Of Order. Pathetic.
i have to give it to him he is brave even tho he toke over when avon was locked up an willing to stand by it when he comes home..all this talk about avon coming home let me tool up
Marlo is no fool. He scouts all of his opponents very well, as is evidenced in this scene. Stringer was doing a lot of talking while deep down inside, Marlo was waging a lot of psychological warfare by simply remaining stoic, kept to himself and not saying anything.
Don't compare stringer to Luciano. Luciano did founded the Commission so that every family control their own grews and that there wouldn't be a boss of all bosses. Stringer founded the Co-op thinking that he can create a group made up of different drug crews to control the drug trade together and thought it would work without no violence. Luciano never said no violence he just founded the commission so that all the Dons control his own family and no boss of all bosses bullshit
Stringer was always smarter than all the other kings. He was going to make it legit and bigger than ever...which is the thing you want to do in the game once you get to that point. Stringer was the man.
Stringer was smart, but not so smart as to prevent Clay Davis from taking his money, or Omar and Brother Mouzone from figuring out that he was the one who set them up. Marlo was tougher and had better instincts. He may not have gotten A's on his papers at the community college, but he was a prodigy in the game.
Come on, You shouldn't say things like that. Coons? That's racist, and has no place in todays society. Its particularly sad coming from someone named Ali Khander Khan. You of all people, should know better, especially since your from Somalia. Because everyone knows that the worst niggers come from Somalia. You fuckers eat dirt and give your children AIDS. So please do everyone a favor and think before you make a racist comment like this again,
Lots of truth from Stringer. He was right about how those in authority would want things run. However, he totally underestimated Marlo - "Chris, tell our people to tool up." Says it all. A man who could only ever go one way.
Stringer was way too pragmatic to stay in the game, even though Avon was kinda trigger happy when he got out of jail i can now see his point, you don't offer a peace treaty to every young hood who shakes up your organisation and not expect him to think you're weak, that's the same mistake Prop Joe made with Marlo and look what happened to him...
CO-OP made him the offer because they wanted his corners...which doesnt make sense....why would Marlo give up his corners and Lose Money?? they should have just left him alone and let him do his thing. Stanfield pump on their corners...Avon should have been smart and joined the CO-OP...and they pump on their respective corners...and both crews respect eachothers space. CO-OP would crush Marlo if he ever came at them. hell, Barksdale Crew was CLOSE to taking Marlo out in season 3.
silkymo right, Marlo was lucky. Slim had Marlo Snoop and Chris in his sights.

Mallice88 7 months ago
@Mallice88 Stringer didn't want to be the king. He didn't care about his name ringing out. He wanted to get out of the game and live a comfortable life. His problem was that he tried to bring Avon with him, but Avon was still on that kiddie gangsta shit.
String was on some grown man shit. What does a nigga over 30 want to do with holding corners and having shootouts? If all you have to do is finance a package to see profit, why fight over corners?
mankyller 7 months ago 3

Kalefthebeast 8 months ago 2
The real game it town was always Avon and stringer
monexmeldrick 8 months ago
Marlo was lucky period. Barksdale and Bell fell over mixed vision. There was no one left. Barksdale crew had them in hiding and cornered at the end of Season 3. They only came out of hiding when Barksdale got popped.
tnauls 9 months ago
The Barksdale Empire was weak in the 2nd season much more than the 3rd. For all this talk about their "weakness", Marlo and Avon were trading kills throughout the entire season. Marlo would've died at the rim shop on the last episode of season 3 if McNulty hadn't come to arrest Avon and his boys.
Stringer met Marlo here because he was about business, not gangster bullshit. In the end, Stringer and Avon brought themselves down. Marlo just happened to be there afterward to pick up the pieces.

Safo8888 1 year ago 2
@Safo8888
Slim Charles and to a lesser extent Fat-Face Rick technically were the bosses at the end of The Wire. They were the only ones who haven't got pinched by the law or killed in the streets, and both were still active in the drug trade in their respective roles in the Co-op.

Stringer made a huge mistake here. Marlo is a totalitarian and a sociopath. You can't reason with those type of people.
TheDoogies3 1 year ago
@TheDoogies3 Problem was, Avon and Stringer weren't used to dealing with these types of people. The people they delt with lived by a code, which Marlo didn't have. Realizing all that, what gives you the impression that he was "faggot punk bitch?"
heflys20 2 years ago 3
@heflys20 - his insecurities. He tried so hard to prove he was the shit. It just wasn't natural for him. He was smart. But he was like a bill gates turned drug dealer. A nerd in the game.
KobeSpawn 2 years ago
I see it as being ambitious, not insecure. An insecure individual wouldn't have taken over the drug game in such a short amount of time. Furthermore, half the individuals in the show were concerned with their reputation; from Avon to Omar. How can you hope to thrive if you don't have a reputation? And, apparently, his behavior was natural, as evidenced by his final scene in the show.
heflys20 2 years ago
Except for moving his head, marlo did not move the entire time Stringer was speaking.
robertmurray7782 2 years ago
This was a more iconic scene than was at first realized. Stringer was a great manager in the Barksdale crew but he didn't 'read between the lines' the way Avon did. Avon knew Marlo's heart and what he was dealing with - that there would never be a truce or a 'deal'...
mmcneil777 2 years ago
lol notice Stringer tugged on Marlo's short sleeve...then afterwards shrugged it off at the end of this scene. Basically wasted Marlo's valuable time.
Apexed818 2 years ago
Stringer seriously messed up here. By going to Marlo with a peace offer, he let Marlo know that the Barksdales didn't have any muscle. Marlo knew that if the Barksdales were really strong they would have taken him out rather than talking.
TheBlackDragon54321 2 years ago 31
so true... Avon was tryna show stringer it will make use look like a punk but he wasn't listening
18ou 2 years ago
That's true. In an earlier scene when Stringer was talking to Avon about upturns and downturns in the "market", Avon stopped him and said "this ain't about your business school, this is that OTHER thing". Avon knows that there's always going to be a Marlo, and that there's only one way to deal with him. This is a characteristic of the institution or "Game" they're a part of, and not even Stringer can change that. Prop Joe later tried to "civilize" the man himself, and it cost him dearly.
downtownclaydavis 2 years ago 22
@downtownclaydavis - Very true. No matter how civilized you try to make it, its still the streets in the end. And you will always have someone on the outside of your little "organized world" thats looking to take over. They don't want apart of it. They want the whole thing. And ain't but 1 way to deal with that kind of mentality. Gotta put them away for good.
KobeSpawn 2 years ago
@downtownclaydavis Yep, good point

@TheBlackDragon5
ManhattanProject9 1 year ago
@TheBlackDragon54321
Pathetic.
