Kaufmann has a high baritone voice--great for Wagner, but it is misplaced in this duet which calls for a real tenor. Since Khvorostovsky's voice is wanting in depth and volume, the performance is not at all satisfying. There is not enough difference between the two voices in tone color. Of course, I was spoiled by live performances of Wunderlich, a real tenor, and Alexander Sved, a substantial baritone.
@Luck1au THanks for your comment to my comment. I can't even make sense of what you're trying to say. I don't know either what do you mean that I should be a musical advisor to beginners like Kaufmann? WHAT? To me it's amazingly beautiful and admirable to see a great German tenor incur into the more romantic repertoire particularly given the size of Kaufmann's voice or the beautiful Hvorostovvsky. You don't see Germans and Russians singing this music. These two do it superbly. Don't agree? Ape!
@Limpandtotheleft ...bowels? I don't follow. Perhaps an idiom with which I am not familiar? I was saying that I think Kaufmann is pretty attractive, by the standards of male opera singers, though this is by no means the best version of this duet I've heard.
Just as great tenors seek out great sopranos, so do great baritones seek out great tenors, and this time round, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, arguably the greatest baritone of this era, seeks out Jonas Kaufmann, in all likelihood the greatest tenor now, just as did Fritz Wunderlich and Hermann Prey, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Carlo Bergonzi!
Tenor0max I agree totally. It's refreshing to hear these two who have giant voices treat this piece in such a delicate and beautiful way. A pair of powerhouses singing this very lyric duet in such a appropriate way. Who would ever imagine a German Tenor and a Russian Bass/Baritone singing a French jewel!
Kaufmann has a beautiful voice but he definetly should not be singing this plus I don't care what anyone says there has got to be some false production!
@oznoddy Kauffman is "gorgeous-looking man"? Did your guide-dog tell you that? Did he not notice your grammatical error? My own family dog sat and looked at this, and I asked him what he thought of the scruffy, unshaven German man? He clearly pondered this for a few seconds before he answered. His answer? "RUFF RUFF!!!!"
Jonas and Dmitri, no matter what you're trying to do here, all the tension and excitement is gone because the conducting is deadly slow. A terrible tendency nowadays and the only reason why sometimes I wish to be back to the 60's. Besides all that, the singing is nice but I prefer a more lyric approach with "lighter" voices.
@srauts ~ I totally agree with you! Thank you for such a correct pronouncement. I believe this German tenor is the greatest nowadays as a singer, musician and stage wise. That's also my opinion!

@tenor0max as much as I admire both Khvorostovsky and Kaufmann for the beauty of their voices and musicality, I have to disappoint you, they are not dramatic voices but rather very liric with a lot of chest and little squillo, they are miked in big and midium houses. Color of their voices fool many people thinking they are big, they are not, but I still admire their art, they are unique.
@nessundorma111 - That's exactly my perception of both folks, although Kauffman losses more emission than Khvorostovsky . He reminded me about a TOSCA sung by Domingo at the Orange County Musical Arts, in Costa Mesa, CA. many years ago. We know that besides being famous for his long career ( histrionism, stage presence, musicianship ) Don Placido is also known by us opera buffs as the owner of a feeble vocal technique, lack of support and little squillo in his C's, B's and even Bb's.
@nessundorma111 I agree, one can easily be fooled by the colour of the voice. But Kaufmann has a carrying, resonant voice nonetheless. His instrument is lyrical in nature, a fact many people overlook. But it has strong squillo, as anyone who ever heard im in house will confirm. Singing opera is a matter of projection, not of big sounds.
How exciting! Yes we all know Bjoerling and Merills beautiful rendition, but I think these two gifted musicians have created a standard of their own. Bravo!!
It's a bit of a stretch for Kaufmann. They needed an actual tenor.

Little to slow. Thats just my opinion though. Kaufmann has a good voice...but his vowels are very wide.
