  • i wish i had the ability and resources to build one of these can you get bass from it?

  • Is it dangerous if you accidentally touch it?

  • @Khazar01 it burns the skin as if touching a candle flame.. but it doesn't kill you.

  • @Khazar01 It will leave 0.3 mm burn in diameter, frequence here can reach few MHz, there is just no time for current to flow across your body, it reverses or interrupts. I'm pretty like to touch the streamer, plasma's temperature here can reach 3000+ C, it can melt tungsten spiral from the light bulb, but streames is thin, and there will almost will be nothing after fast caching and leaving you hand out of dangerous zone. To avoid the burns, it will be better to have wet hands/

  • I'm glad someone else said "mad scientist" so I don't have to! Truly mad and brilliant.

  • solid snake tesla coil.

  • hes like the mad genius german scientist, kinda like the medic in tf2 >:D

  • hugo escaped from island xD

just joke, great job and explaining

  • wow this so great!!!..love it!!..what programmer did you use?? please a want to do it...thanks XD

  • Cool,

wohnst Du zufälligerweise in Berlin ?

    Melde Dich mal.

    Danke.

    Gruss, Stefan.

  • Saubere Sache! Find ich echt ne geile Idee!

  • amazing !

  • cool

  • baust du mir son ding?

  • wow thats soo cool!

  • This is very impressive. Good job :)

  • It's a Very Very Very good job ;) Very well!

  • would it be possible to add a volume control to that, or does adjusting the output volume of the computer do that?

  • Did you make the CNC machine to the left?

  • How much ozone does this apparatus generate?

  • @OlDoinyo I don't have a mass spectrometer at home, but my nose tells me there is some ozone. You can smell it at quite low concentrations though.

  • how loud can these get ??

  • Nice video, showed how you set it up, is that a Tesla coil you made or bought? It just looks like a tube with insulated copper wire around it or something, lol sorry, not as knowledgeable with it as you may be, however, how small could you possibly go and still get virtually the same sound as say a 8' inch satellite speaker?

  • niiice...

  • Nice good job with the tesla coil design:)

  • its craig from malcom in the middle!

  • That's so cool!

  • this is this flame produce music ? really ? oh my god ! exellent ! bravo ! waah

  • ein deutscher xD

  • You might increase your efficiently if you removed the large circuit board under the coil, you are likely loosing some power due to the eddy current in the copper board

  • the dude kinda sounds like dr.strangelove...which makes this video much, much more awesome.

  • Ow that is so good really awsome. I was wondering can u get any bass out of it. thx alot...

  • ~ahh so easy , and cheap... (lol no)thats expensive , complicated and you awesome 5* \o/

  • looks like high fidelity sound, but which is the electric consumption?

  • mhm I'm afraid it's not high fidelity at the moment. there's a continuous hissing sound related to the large size of the coil and the low resonance frequency. At this stage the power consumptions was around 120Watts. In my other videos you see the the upgraded version now with a continuous power of up to 400Watts

  • Man hört sofort das du Deutsch bist ^^

  • how to you make this ? i wanna make it at my house :}

  • Isnt that the guy from lost?

  • Ubergeek!

Haha - that's amazing. Thanks for the video. I didn't understand much of it, but it was very interesting indeed!

  • MONKEY ISLAND!! sweeeeet

Much clearer/nicer sound than other modulated 'musical' teslas I've seen, i think due mostly to loud, large and eratic sparks? Be interested to see the voltage wound up :)

Great video mate, very helpful! Much respect for building it from the ground up, software and all.

  • thanks :-) the audio quality raises with the resonance frequency, so larger tesla coils have in principle worse audio quality, but it is easier to get larger sparks.

on my other videos you can see this coil with more power :-)

  • Great !!! How are girls about it ;o)))) I can imagine when everybody is dancing in faraday cage suit ;o) . You are great, man ;o))), You are great, man ;P. Thank you for this ;o)

  • I am ashamed that this has never dawned on me all these years of playing with tesla coils? WOW!!! (on hands and knees) "I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy"!

  • You sir, are simply pure genius.

Seriusly. This is the future of technology, and loudspeakers....

  • youve never heard of it? plasma speakers have been around for a pretty long while. but still, props for the guy that made this himself.

  • Fookin HIGHLY impressive!!! i wanna make one :D

  • Monkey Island ftw!

  • this is amazing for an arc of plasma to be emitting music like a real speaker instead of that ZZZZZZZT zapping sound you normally hear. ive seen plenty of plasma arc speakers and I did find it hard to believe that the plasma arc was making the sound but it was.

  • This is so cool. Very well explained, and worth to watch. Greets

  • ??? is this real this is an uprising if it iz

  • I assure you it is real. the size of the plasma flame is modulated with the audio signal. As the air is heated up it expands and contracts according to the signal and starts to vibrate. The surface of the flame acts like the membrane of a speaker. It is basically controlled thunder...

  • of cuz its real :D

  • I think you shouldve done a fast explanation of whats going to happen, then a demonstration to keep viewers interested and intruiged, then explain how it works :)

  • yes you're propably right... i showed the coil at different occasions and some people don't believe it is working even when they see it live. I'll be propably doing another video with my new cam. In HD then ;-)

  • My congratulations :) first really really good video about it :) just it screwed my dream i will build it

  • thank you very much... i did all the circuits myself so I propably didn't get the simplest method modulating the arc. it proved to be quite universal though.

  • How's your scope, I got many recommendations for analog ones, or analog digital, are you satisfied?

And very nice vid, why don't you document it?

  • i am quite good with my scope. it is the TDS2022 from tektronix. (2 CH. 200MHz, 2GS/s)

I wouldn't buy an analog-only scope any more. Also consider that second-hand devices are often quite expensive for what they can. My scope was around 1800€ two or three years ago. There are also low-cost digital scopes for ~380€ from UNI-T which look quite promising at the first glance.

  • It's awesome that your documentary is properly done, most videos on here are horrible quality, have no information whatsoever and show absolutely no work done :D

  • Rarely I see videos like this, where the creator tells pretty anything about his circuit! Nice job, anyone can build up a singing tesla coil and make a movie about that, but you filmed and described every section of the project! Well done!

  • Is that really happening? Or is it that sparks are going off at the same time as speaker and he's playing it off like the sparks themselves are the source of sound?

  • its the sparks dude no speakers there

  • I can assure you that there are no speakers involved. the plasma flame changes size with the audio signal. the air heats and cools down so the air starts to vibrate. the surface of the flame acts as the membrane of the speaker.

  • P.S.: it's basically controlled thunder....

  • Is the inductance of the coil tuned to the bandwidth of audio frequencies in any way? Is the atmel runing the opto coupler on/off at 1Mhz as indicated on the screen?

Great job and very interesting concept.

  • for good audio quality the resonance frequency should be as high as possible. but the bandwidth of the coil (quality factor) has not been optimized for this purpose.

the atmel controls an DDS IC (AD9835) which generates the 1MHz signal. The signal is then interrupted by a PWM signal of the audio input via an AND-Gate.

  • I was wondering about the AND gate. You could make it so that the spark appears only during the audio modulation, correct? But you used the AND or NAND gate to remove the 1MHz signal during modulation. Neat.

  • mhm no it's not working that way when you use the flame as a "speaker".. if you imagine the audio wave "silence" means a continuous line in the vertical center. that is translated into a flame size 50% of the maximum. when there is a sound the waveform goes up and down around the center line. in the same way the flame will grow and shrink.

it's different when you're using the flame as an "instrument". Here the flame goes on and of with the frequency of the single note you are playing.

  • Hi, very impressive coil! I would like to get some more info on the PWM/DDS portion of your design to use in a coil me and some friends are planning. Could I possibly get schematics or any additional info Thanks

  • no problem! just contact me here on youtube and send me your skype name or email-address.

  • DAMN SON you got a nice setup

  • MONKEY ISLAND!!!!!! YAAAAY!!!!!! Absolute Legend!!!!! Awesome vid...

  • very cool. Excellent. Your power supply is pretty scary.

  • thanks! yes... at that time it really was. now it has its own case and digital control panel with display and setpoint values for voltage and current. it now also has an USB port to control it from the PC. you can see it in my newer videos.

  • holy shit u r right

  • great video .... 73 de YO3IVA

  • geiles osziloskop

  • Tektronix TDS 2022B

  • What I still don't know: Do you use any Computer-Program for transmitting the 'sound' to the Coil?

  • no.. the computer program only controls some parameters of the coil such as excitation frequency and so on. With my most recent hardware version all the parameters are stored in an EEPROM so no PC is needed at all. The audio can be connected to an cinch plug at my modulator circuit. you can use any analog music source (i.e. ipod).

  • nice wideo!

  • Does it sound better than on normal speakers

  • no this one doesn't. it is optimized for the show effect. to get a really good sounding speaker I'll need to increase the operating frequency and use a different modulation approach... propably this will be the next winter project :-)

  • Nice work! And nice stereotypical german accent :P (don't thumb me down I'm german as well lol)

  • Very impressive!! Currently Im at work making a musical tesla coil, this vid makes me want to finish it even more!

    Great work!!

  • Cool!

  • hi! great job!

what was the cost to build this ?

how much money time it takes to build this setup ?

  • thanx!

from the start to a working setup it took about 2 months (evenings and weekends).

if you don't count the power supply I needed for not working on grid-potential I estimate a cost of about 50€ to 100€. But I already had the power MOSFET and the CNC milling machine for the PCBs and mechanics.

  • They actually can make pretty decent bass, just this is a very very small version. Also the larger ones can be literally heard for miles... So basically you can make an entire sound system out of these with smaller units for tweeters and larger unit for bass and mid. Im not sure how marketable they are in the current economy but they would still be snapped up by the rich and famous or anyone with a business that wants to draw in more clients with shock and awe. Good luck on your adventure.

  • "Shock" is indeed the word ;-)

  • hehe pun intended, nice catch...

  • pretty frikkin awesome. sounds a bit tinny though

  • Just imagine the giant boners Kraftwerk sprung when they learned of this technology.

  • Whats the befits towards a conventional speaker? And there are always dangers with something like this. There is a good market, however, for people who are into these things. For example, if you could make the sound clear enough, I would be good for showing off, in fact with the right price, im sure you could get good sales, but in terms of efficiency( uss a lot of voltage), and usefulness, it will not be a good product.

  • oh guybrush threepwood, what have you got in your pants? lol

  • Porky...!! :D Anyway a smart one .... nice ! I like it...the germans are smart people

  • they have BMW,Mercedes,Audi and you say that they suck at making cars ? cmon man....

  • Theyre ugly... Yes

  • Your video is most popular in these countries/states:

    Germany: 29%

    United States: 26%

    Canada: 12%

    Russia: 11%

    --> Ich denke nicht.

  • My knowledge in electronics and electricity are ubersmall. And so, Please answer me a question why the sparks on this modulators have the same purple color?

  • that's more a question of plasma physics than electronics. When ionizing gas atoms, electrons are risen in higher energy levels. Then the electrons continuously are falling back where they belong while freeing some amount of energy. This energy is radiated as light. Every ionized gas element has its own special light spectrum. This purple is the typical color of mixed nitrogen and oxygen (aka our atmosphere) .

  • the coulor depends on where you live and the air quality and if there is more noble gasses in your room

  • awesome 5 *

  • hey dude kool vid, i absouloutly love your german acsent :-)

  • wow :D respect dude ,respect

  • Hey... THIS is fantastic to think that what you're doing can assist in some way in the arriving present where we'll not have to use speakers to hear anything!

I mean,.. this is a first(or maybe 2nd) step towards what is to come into being normal in about 10+ earth orbits!

    Keep up the fantastic work!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Monkey Island is fantastic!!

  • you, sir, are an ubergeek.

  • Thank you sir! :-)

  • impressive

  • That is interesting

  • Very impressive. I have done a singing arc only with a flyback transformer. 73 de OH2FLO

  • Nice!

  • Abandon this goofy ozone producing mechanism and produce a nice fly back circuit. Much cleaner sound no need to overlay a square wave in order to modulate.

  • no way. watch my other videos and you'll see that the output power can be much larger than that first try (upgraded TC) Theres not more ozone than with a flypack, the sound is the same when I use two electrodes (but the light-show-effect is almost gone) and the modulation with PWM is really easy to accomplish and very versatile. Modulation of the high voltage or a full bridge (class-D) can be done with this setup as with a flyback.

  • Wow, I'm impressed! To be the discharge making the sound, it's pretty hi-fi!

  • lol thats amazing

  • (ima IT network engineer myself :S)

  • lol, you could've picked a better song brotha! haha (5* and FAVORITED!)

  • thanks :-) monkey island.. the best game soundtrack ever ;-)

  • Can you teach me?

  • i suggest before making arcs you should start with the basics. tesla coils, especially with spark gaps are not that difficult to build. the biggest problem is to get the components or to build them mechanically. There are many websites describing the process. just google for "tesla coil"

  • So this is also how those plasma tweeters work! ive seen that before once somwhere online. What kind of power do you use in watts to keep this running? i do not expect this to be efficient :-) I have my own PCB's that i sell Using TA2020 or TA2024 IC's. Very efficient! up to 90%.

  • the efficiency of the RF-Generation itself is quite high as it is a Class-E-Type Generator which is also a switch-mode amplifier like your Class-D ICs. But then of course the sound emission by ionizing and heating up the air to several thousand °Cs has a terrible efficiency, but I can't specify the dBs per Watt. The setup in this video consumes about 120Watts. The upgraded one in the other videos up to 500W.

  • woot for monkey island LeChuck's theme.

  • Wow, thats cool! i'd love to give it a try!

Do you know what frequency range you can get from a "speaker" like this? and maybe you can horn load it? Would also be cool! and then make 2 pieces for stereo! Anyway! great Job!

    Greetings From Shenzhen China

  • in theory the frequency response should be very good. in reality there are some limiting factors though. first is the background noise you get from the arcs igniting continuosly. there is one company making a chamber-like plasma speaker without arcs but continuosly glowing plasma. the bass response gets better with higher power but then at one point the electrodes start to melt and other parts of the air are ionizing, which causes a clipping-effect and sounds terrible.

  • Cheers to us nerds, mate! :)

  • Cheers! :-)

  • DUUUDE THAT AMAZING !~ how do u make one o-O NOT AS COMPLEX AS YOURS. not all of us where that gifted XDD

  • What was Tesla trying to make? This is neat, but what is a Tesla Coil for?

  • he helped building up the first AC power distribution networks. With his resonance transformers (aka Tesla Coils) he wanted to achieve wireless power transmission over large distances. He thought that if he hit the resonance frequency of the earth he could do that without any losses which we now know is not possible.

today it's only a neat demonstration of glowing plasma... and for playing music of course ;-)

  • You have a great "mad scientist" voice.

  • mhm.. i call it "german accent".. but propably that's the same ;-)

  • Absolut geil^^ Das nenn' ich ne ordentliche Audiomodulation :D

  • COOL!!

  • zee ist zaa mad scientist!

    bwhahahahahaha!

  • THAT IS INCREDIBLE. Congratulation ! That's best plasma speaker which I've ever heard.

I'm interested ind electronic so i know how dificult is design device like that :).

  • Great ! ^^

  • hey, great video, do you use a flyback transformer?

  • hi and thanks :-)

no I have no flyback. I go from my 120V power supply to the RF-Generator and then directly to the primary of the coil.

  • lol the tesla coil has an audible sound played of its original current

  • Does it have powerful bass?

The sound is amazing. Is it able to play human voice?

  • Hi spyxter,

Bass is a problem with the small sparks I have here.. i want to power it up in the future :-)

the coils plays everything from an analog input signal.. human voice included. (watch the other videos of the coil in my channel.)

  • it is possible to have one list of what i need for build this but i think it was difficult because i don't understand everything very good job

  • your audio is amazing,I got to think it is from the controller set on the sound card, wow nice work. but how much power are you drawing? if you don't mind me asking

  • thanks, and I don't mind at all :-) Currently the coil consumes about 0.9Amp at 120Volts, that means about 108W from the HV-Supply.

  • very good job it is incredible i would like to know how try this very good job

sorry for the mistake i am French ^^

  • Very impressive work!

I'm looking into building the same sort of thing but my design isn't nearly as refined as yours is. I'd like to see any diagrams and schematics you are willing to share.
