lA Fine video about a great ship! What incredible damage it took from the bombs! What saved it was British armored deck, I'll bet. The US kept the wooden flight decks, a fire hazard that the kamikazes could take advantage of. At 7:10 that was the USS Saratoga as converted during WW II, 8" turrets replaced with 5" anti aircraft and foremast chopped. It was our 3rd carrier, "CV3". Her sister, Lexington, was lost May 8, 1942, during the battle of the Coral Sea. Saratoga died at Bikini Atoll..
Carriers were one thing to hit, battleships other. I doubt this proves Luftwaffe could have kept the Royal Navy in line if they had managed to get air supremacy over the canal.
What was the tonnage and speed of this class? I don't think they were as big as the U.S. carriers. China has just launched a new carrier, but it's smaller than ours, and Britain has a new one on order I heard. No one wants to build carriers as large as ours because they think they are sitting ducks for missiles.
@bv141a Corsair had to have tips of the wings sawn off.Seafire needed a wing with a double fold.Think Grumman aircraft folded back across the rear fuselage but if I got this right they fitted larger lifts at Norfolk.
@bv141a They flew Avengers off CVE,s such as taffy task force off Samar no problem flying off Illustrious class. Should have built more Avengers instead of dive bombers You can dropn bombs on carrier all day and not sink it have to hit it with torpedos. Midway was the only exception and japs were caught rearming and refueling
@jers59 USN wouldn't send in the Avengers with the TT's until the Helldivers had softend up the AA defenders with 20 mm cannon, rockets and bombs.Yamato was a team effort.First you strafe and bomb, then torpedo and kill.
@bv141a it was torpedos that sank the Musashi and Yamato as well as 4 jap carriers at Leyte. Look how fast the navy rid itself of dive bombers after WW2 quickly replaced by Douglas Skyraider attack aircraft Avengers served until the late 1950,s with USN and RN
First one! Illustrious was a good design and had an illustrious career. The armored deck of its class payed off at Okinawa when HMS Formidable was attacked by kamikaze planes. While the Americans suffered heavy losses, the Brits only had to sweep their decks more or less.
Experts still battle concerning this issue. Hard ship tough. Come, cheer up, my lads, 'tis to glory we steer, To add something more to this wonderful year; To honour we call you, as freemen not slaves, For who are so free as the sons of the waves....
@DrGull1888 The armored deck made it top-heavy I presume. Seems to me they could have counter-balanced such a problem with out-riggers or an extended keel, or even both.
@DrGull1888 : The Brits invented the angled deck also, which doubled the carrier's usefulness. Too bad the war was over by that time. The Japs missed the boat when they made the 68k ton Yamato class as BB's instead of carriers. They should have listened to Yamamoto.
@DrGull1888 The new 16,000 ton Zumwalts, newest USN class,is a shore bombardment ship,a Battleship,or prehaps glorified monitor[HMS Roberts]the mission of the big gun still lives
@bv141a Shore bombardment ship is a bit understated. Zumwalt class has only two 6" (15cm) guns and the rest are AA guns. But her main armament are her cruise missiles which cannot only devastate the coast but also reach targets hundreds of km in the inland.
@DrGull1888 They are building the lead ship DDX 1000,up the river in Bath, and taking their time. This late in the work they continue to add design contracts. The new 155 is a new class of weapon, sending unarmed munitions into low earth orbit to fall as metiorites.Just in time to go after Irans nuclear program...my guess
@bv141a Why taking their time? no sober workers perhaps, They should move ship building back to New York Philly, Quincy, and Jersey where it belongs the builders of 4 Iowa class BB,s all 4 afloat today, North Carolina, South Dakota, Washington, Arkansas, Arizona, carriers, Oriskany, FDR, Kearsarge, Leyte, Lexington, Bunker Hill, Wasp, Hancock, Bennington, Kitty Hawk, Cruiser, Brooklyn, Juneau, Atlanta,
@bv141a What happened to the other 1000? eating by polar bears. There are 0 ship yard workers in jersey now because they built the ships so good they lasted for years putting themselves out of work, Fletcher, Allen M Sumner, Gearing, KittyHawk, Cabot, Arkansas, USS kidd is museum in Louisiana another DE is museum in Brazil another DD in Korea
@DrGull1888 What heavy losses? Bunker Hill was fully repaired in 3 months, Intrepid much less same with Enterprise,Hancock, Ticonderoga. The Illustrious took 16 months to repair when it was damage in january 1941, after okinawa the Illustrious and Formidable were write offs because of war damage resulting in hull being warped and on Illustrious the centerline was deformed making it useless could only do about 22 knots. Only Victorious saw post war service and it was scrapped by 1969
@jers59 Not sure if its possible or fair to compare the damage of Illustrious to Bunker Hill,8 1100LB bombs cause a very different type of damage to Kamikaze hits, also the deck armour was irrelevant as it was designed to resist 500LB bombs.
@elswick1542 i believe only 1 of those bombed hit the armor deck I was pointing out having internal hanger made the hull vulnerable to warpage, as Illustrious and Formidable were write offs after WW2, RN was going build Malta class carriers similar to Essex class only the end of WW2 cancelled those planes I believe Ark Royal, Eagle #2 had external hanger. Also low hanger deck ceiling made modernization after WW2 more difficult. Bunker Hill was badly damage because of aircraft deck park,
@jers59 Ark 2 had a steel deck but it was not armour,2 hangars, designed for 70 aircraft but normally carried 60.Illustrious designed for 38 but with extra lift and deck parks it was closer to 58.If Ark 2 survived long enough it probably could take 80+with deck parks.Ark 2 was by far the better design for actual war conditions and should have been built in numbers not Illustrious class.Even better design Colossus class 50 aircraft only 15000t had no armour except on magazines.
@elswick1542 Some things never change italian officers and sailors being cowards the captain of the Costa Concordia runs his liner aground showing off then abandons ships before most of the passengers were off as well as his first mate and hides under blanket in life boat. The Concordia will join past italian liner Andrea Doria, Achille Lauro, disasters. Never sail on ship crewed by italians or greeks
@elswick1542 Plus it was night, unfortunely the death toll is going up in the old days they would have giving this incompetant clown bottle of whiskey and revolver with 1 bullet and told to do the honorable thing, or hung from the yard arm If you sail on cruise ships avoid at all cost those crewed by italians and greeks take scandinavian crewed liner. When italians built the Andrea Doria they claimed it was best built ship in the world and unsinkable.
@elswick1542 By the end of the war all carriers were badly overloaded due to aircraft, munitions, supplies, crew, AA guns I doubt they would have survived 2 torpedo hits. Only carriers torpedo after 1942 were Intrepid and Lexington CV16 and both only took 1 torpedo easch and had to limp home for repairs. @jers59 Before air warning radar was developed it was thought carriers would have to operate close to land and be vulnerable to land based aircraft Ark 3 was not well protected from bombs so the Illustrious class was designed with armour like a WW1 battlecruiser.Ark on trials proved that it could have made its design speed on 2 shafts.Simpler boiler arrangement less weight better ship.
@elswick1542 Was the Unicorn a modified Ark Royal or a design to itself, I believe it was only RN carrier to see service in WW2 and Korea was supposed to be modernized after Korea but cost killed those plans

@jers59 Interesting time for submarines.U-35 has just completed,USS California also and HMS Astute is trialling Tomahawk in the Gulf of Mexico.Iran has 3 kilo class possibly with Shkval supercavatation torpedo speed 200k but range only 7.5km (short lance) I give the Iranian boats 1 Day and that's generous ,my opinion the clock is counting down until we find out if 1 day is right.

My guess war in gulf this year with sanctions from EU taking effect yesterday
@elswick1542 Iran is perfect example why large manned bombers are still needed today Israeli F15 and F16 will not get the job done 30.000LBS bunker busting bombs are needed and only bombers can carry those The B52 was most cost effective aircraft in Afghanistan campaign, newer cheaper then B2 bomber is needed
@jers59 IIR a few years ago GE and RR proposed replacing the engines on B52,s with modern turbo fans to reduce fuel consumption and maintenance, nothing seems to have come of this or has it? used to see B52,s every year flying in the UK incredible sight close up.Fantastic preserved example in the 8th AF memorial hangar at Duxford.
@elswick1542 I believe it was cost factor B52,s do not fly 12 hours a day as modern passenger jets do they wanted to take engines from B757 4 of them and put them on B52 that only flies few hours every month besides just would not look right B52 should have 8 jet engines belching black smoke as B52A to G models with J57 engines did. They are under going 11.9 billion dollar upgrade to better support ground troops by Boeing.
@elswick1542 Aviations best days was defintly in 1950,s and 60,s B52 was designed in hotel room in weekend using slide ruler no computer in 1940,s, Compare that to F35 mess, billions spent still not in service and new problems popping up everyday with that program. Even russian migs from that era Mig 15 to 21 were great aircraft
@jers59 MIG 9-21 superb aircraft,19 my personal fav.Avro Vulcan bomber designed by Roy Chadwick(Lancaster) on the back back of a cigarette packet, only one flying looks space age, like a fighter only larger.Hero of mine has flown the F-35 in a simulator thinks it great,to expensive I prefer the FA-18 super Hornet.
@elswick1542 I believe the russkies were giving the brit jet engine because british engineer lost game of pool to russian and that was bet, Vulcans were retired to early you can always order bomber to return except in DR Strangelove (one of my favorite movies,Major Kong nuklear combat toe to toe with the russkies) once you let Trident D5 fly there is no calling it back, Vulcans, B58, XB70 still look futeristic in 2012 . B52 still looks like flying dump truck but it gets the job down.
@jers59 Story about the RR Nene(MIG 15 engine)is complicated,Game of Pool possible but Snooker and Billiards was more popular back then.Russians visiting the RR factory were equipped with sticky shoe soles so swarf from machine tools could be collected and analysed.Russian jets based on Junkers Jumo and BMW burned out the blades after only a few hours RR engines used better metal.Labour gov was probably infiltrated by commies so gave them the engines for cost price any way.
@elswick1542 Could be snookers saw program on military channel on Mig 15 and F86 when russkies were making pirated copies of the B29 called TU4 after 3 forced landed in USSR they followed uncle joe letter to the T about copying everything exactly even Boeing insignia on the yoke was placed on TU4. @bv141a Sounds like the same problem I had last Week that caused me to pull out some of my remaining hair.Big red message "not sent security miss match",or something like only work around I could find was to go to the home page and press send message not reply on the original.

Take out nuke sites destroy the military, smash the revolutionary guards and hope the population overthrow the mullahs.Maybe occupy some od small islands in gulf to protect the straits
@elswick1542 As I said Illustrious class were good for med and atlantic not for vast pacific where they had limited ship repair facilities the closest being pearl harbor its like comparing apples and oranges the FAA also suffered from being under control of the RAF not being able to buy aircraft built specifically for carrier operations
@DrGull1888 The Illustrious class were larger then Ark Royal (1) but carried only about 50.000 gallons of fuel compared to 100.000 gallons for Ark Royal and bomb and torpedo stowage on Illustrious was 175 tons on Ark Royal 225 tons plus on Illustrious only the area between the 2 elevator was armored they suffered from smaller elevators, smaller airgroup they were good for med but not the vast pacific and they never had to face mass kamikaze attack as TF 58 did 10 in all

@JBC814 Displacement: 23,000 tons (standard),
28,661 tons (loaded)
Length: 743.75 ft (226.70 m)
Beam: 95 ft (29 m)
Draught: 28 ft (8.5 m) full load
Propulsion: 6 Admiralty 3-drum boilers
3 Parsons geared turbines producing 110,000 shp (82 MW) driving three shafts
Speed: 30.5 knots (56 km/h)
Very rough but I think it similar in size to Enterprise, much smaller than an Essex.
