This takes me back to when MTV first started.. This was when Music Videos started to get real popular and people like Dire Straits brought out Monjey for Nothing..
@BurnRoddy Matt Frewer. He was also the dad that got bit by a zombie in the Dawn of the Dead remake, the voice of Panic in Disney's Hercules, and the ex-super villain in The Watchmen.
he used to have his own show didnt he? it was a music video show, only went for half n hour and he hosted it and it was on the ABC every weekday afternoon
@punji73 Yes, Max Headroom used to host a music video show, but the show (and Max himself) originated in the UK before being exported to the USA (and elsewhere). Max had quite a cult following here in his homeland! Oh, and if you're wondering how he got the strange name, too - it comes from the pilot episode - well, just read it all here if you're interested: en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Max_Headroom_(character) :) BRING BACK MAX!! He was way more entertaining than the X-Factor!! :D
yes coke stole it if u look and the original the real max for a split second he picks up a can of pepsi and tosses it on the floor and this is where the idea came form.
ps this happened on the same day month and year is was born
Its funny max headroom really was the future, he looks like hes doing a youtube video blog and the way he cuts in and out is sorta like how the in crowd like to cut there edit......phillip defranto ect. Kinda irrie really.
@bongokaktus It's not Jim Carrey, it's Matt Frewer, a very famous actor, I might add. Been in a lot of movies and tv shows. One of my favorite actors. He's also a popular voice actor. Very distinctive voice. Watch the cartoons on CollegeHumor, for example.
@DictatorRoB No I think so because I could understand what he was saying. I cannot understand a WORD that Crook with the mask was saying. And the both of those guys should have been found and put away.
"butt... butt... butt... the bitches here are... so hot" LOL, don't you just love Max's double-speak?
I remember this commercial was only shown in the evenings due to it's overtly sexual tones plus the fact that some people thought the girl really did flash her boobs on TV!
Yes, he does... but I'm sure it was meant to have double-meaning. I mean, c'mon... do you really think it's nothing more than a coincidence that the camera pans across a semi-naked woman as he says it? Back in those days, 'bitches' was a trendy word for 'sexy lady' and was pronounced exactly like he said it 'beetches' (beaches). Thats why the commercial was only shown late in the evening.
I remember it first screened in the late afternoon and lots of people wrote in and complained about it.
I always thought the word Max was playing on was "Hot". He says "the beaches here are hot" and the camera pans to a woman sunbathing as if Max is saying "the beaches aren't the only thing thats hot"
I never heard bitches as women until the rap culture of the late '90's.
I think the reason people complained is the 1/2 naked woman, the perceived flashing of breasts you talk about & the fact that Max was clearly watching th woman without her knowing.
I'd say it'd be one of the first times the word was ever used that way... and don't forget, Max Headroom was considered to be way ahead of its time (it set many trends and became one of the most successful and influential commercial icons in television history)... the comedy writing in this video is incredibly witty and sophisticated for its time. These days we see it as the norm.
I remember a few of my mates at school started using the word 'beetch' around that time to describe a hot girl.
And when I said 'those days', I was referring to the period around the beginning of the decade when the word 'beetches' began finding its way into the street culture of the time, such as early rap and the skating scene. Max was supposed to be loosely based on a cyberpunk, neo-noir future about 10 years in the future... so much of the material written for him was deliberately forward thinking and controversial. Looking at it with 21st century eyes, its hard to see how it stands out that way.

They were specifically based on Max Headroom, that was the whole point of them. Cafe 80s in the film was supposed to contain cliched elements of the 80s: Remember Part II wasn't made until 1989 so although they were able to use the 'Max' style Ayatollah and Reagan characters in the past tense, they were still recent enough to be relevant.
She's hot alright... Problem is that the advert was 1987. Assuming she was at least 18 at the time, that'd make her 39 or 40 by now. Hopefully she isn't divorced with five kids and an alcholic stoner for a boyfriend... she'd be one damned fine 40-year-old.
Max is timeless however, I'm archiving-chiving it for m-m-my kids, for my kids..
@dieselpuppy74 : That was quite an in-depth analysis of the girls future, but i do understand where you are coming from in regards to her probably ending up knocked up with 5 kids to a drop kick boyfriend :) If not then yes, i definitely wouldn't mind looking her up if she has kept herself well.
Max is cool, but this commercial is stupid!
