  • Max is cool, but this commercial is stupid!

  • This takes me back to when MTV first started.. This was when Music Videos started to get real popular and people like Dire Straits brought out Monjey for Nothing..

  • ok, who youtube pooped this ad...wait...0.o

  • Mmmmm Max n Coke. Couldn't work out which was bubblier.

  • what the fuck is a cokeologist?

  • @OnlySeanJohn

It was 1987 and you have to ask something like that?

  • @HostageKiller It is no longer 1987 and no, I suppose I didn't have to ask. But I did.

  • I always thought that was Dennis Hopper from Super Mario Bros.!

  • he sounds like a living YTP

  • was this new coke they were advertising?

  • @mediajunkie2007 yes. you can tell by the design of the can

  • Max, you perve! Let the hot chick get some sun in peace.

  • Max is Lawrence Odonnell!!!!

  • I don't know his name but Max Headroom IS the guy from Honey I Shrunk The kids, he's the guy who portrays the father of the Thompson boys Ross.

  • @BurnRoddy Matt Frewer. He was also the dad that got bit by a zombie in the Dawn of the Dead remake, the voice of Panic in Disney's Hercules, and the ex-super villain in The Watchmen.

  • he used to have his own show didnt he? it was a music video show, only went for half n hour and he hosted it and it was on the ABC every weekday afternoon

  • @punji73 Yes, Max Headroom used to host a music video show, but the show (and Max himself) originated in the UK before being exported to the USA (and elsewhere). Max had quite a cult following here in his homeland! Oh, and if you're wondering how he got the strange name, too - it comes from the pilot episode - well, just read it all here if you're interested: en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Max_Headroom_(character) :) BRING BACK MAX!! He was way more entertaining than the X-Factor!! :D

  • @NellJSmith yeah i used to watch his show every afternoon on the ABC before doctor who came on back in the mid 80's lol

  • This commercial used to freak me out then... and it freaks me out now.

  • 0: 26 that's was the classic coca-cola instead the new coke!

wow! didn't know Australia still have the classic Coke at that time!

  • @BlueSoulJim - we were lucky - we never had New Coke!

  • @BlueSoulJim - We were lucky in Oz; we never had New Coke.

  • @BlueSoulJim - We were lucky in Oz. We never had New Coke.

  • yes coke stole it if u look and the original the real max for a split second he picks up a can of pepsi and tosses it on the floor and this is where the idea came form.

ps this happened on the same day month and year is was born

  • @blkhat117 whoops im a dumbass disregard that first commit.

  • Its funny max headroom really was the future, he looks like hes doing a youtube video blog and the way he cuts in and out is sorta like how the in crowd like to cut there edit......phillip defranto ect. Kinda irrie really.

  • I must admit Max inspired my Youtube user name!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i don't like coke but i like this commercial!

  • I d-d-don't prefer Coke, but I s-s-s-sure loooO-OOve Max Headroom!

  • Max was good value ... bring him back, I reckon ...

  • WTF FTW!

  • Max head room annoyed the heck out of me

  • Why does this remind me of Jim Carrey? O_o

  • @RetroZombieee accent - me too

  • @RetroZombieee Its got to be Jim carrey!

  • @bongokaktus It's not Jim Carrey, it's Matt Frewer, a very famous actor, I might add. Been in a lot of movies and tv shows. One of my favorite actors. He's also a popular voice actor. Very distinctive voice. Watch the cartoons on CollegeHumor, for example.

  • He ain't got shit on fake Max Headroom who pirated broadcast in 1987.

  • @DictatorRoB The REAL Max headroom was better than that Crook.

  • @maxcardun

You think so only because that tasta ass at 0:09.

  • @DictatorRoB No I think so because I could understand what he was saying. I cannot understand a WORD that Crook with the mask was saying. And the both of those guys should have been found and put away.

  • @maxcardun

Are you kidding me? It doesn't matter what he is saying, but what he DID!

  • it was a tv show

    yea... they tried haha

  • "butt... butt... butt... the bitches here are... so hot" LOL, don't you just love Max's double-speak?

I remember this commercial was only shown in the evenings due to it's overtly sexual tones plus the fact that some people thought the girl really did flash her boobs on TV!

This ad really personifies the Max character.

  • He Clearly says beaches.

  • Yes, he does... but I'm sure it was meant to have double-meaning. I mean, c'mon... do you really think it's nothing more than a coincidence that the camera pans across a semi-naked woman as he says it? Back in those days, 'bitches' was a trendy word for 'sexy lady' and was pronounced exactly like he said it 'beetches' (beaches). Thats why the commercial was only shown late in the evening.

I remember it first screened in the late afternoon and lots of people wrote in and complained about it.

  • I always thought the word Max was playing on was "Hot". He says "the beaches here are hot" and the camera pans to a woman sunbathing as if Max is saying "the beaches aren't the only thing thats hot"

I never heard bitches as women until the rap culture of the late '90's.

I think the reason people complained is the 1/2 naked woman, the perceived flashing of breasts you talk about & the fact that Max was clearly watching th woman without her knowing.

  • I'd say it'd be one of the first times the word was ever used that way... and don't forget, Max Headroom was considered to be way ahead of its time (it set many trends and became one of the most successful and influential commercial icons in television history)... the comedy writing in this video is incredibly witty and sophisticated for its time. These days we see it as the norm.

I remember a few of my mates at school started using the word 'beetch' around that time to describe a hot girl.

  • @mantara32 - don't forget that this ad aired in Australia in 1987. Back then, we all heard him say "beaches". Can't we just leave it at that?

Sorry for the triple post before.

  • And when I said 'those days', I was referring to the period around the beginning of the decade when the word 'beetches' began finding its way into the street culture of the time, such as early rap and the skating scene. Max was supposed to be loosely based on a cyberpunk, neo-noir future about 10 years in the future... so much of the material written for him was deliberately forward thinking and controversial. Looking at it with 21st century eyes, its hard to see how it stands out that way.

  • She looks a bit like Lley Lley's missus.

    Y'now?

    Lleyton Hewitt. "Our Lley Ley."

  • coke is it. I bet max. I bet.

  • Fantastic Matt.

    Fantastic Max Headroom.

  • He's like Larry Kingbutwaytoawesomeforsomepeoplenotme we also call it radioontvheadguywithbodydowntochesterdownnoshootgoodmanshootbadhorizonnotlittlegirlshootlinetheresehowfarbulletreago after boy get line to go farther than he think bullet go during day than you comeback when come with better gun say i think i can shootfarther than that keepgoing i have better gun and thenwhentidereallowyou can walkacrossto the otherside so zoe bell does not die on los or regina flange girl because innovationil

  • I am voting for John HOWARD.

  • Hang on... in the "Back to the Future" movie...

It was Pepsi all the way.

  • It was just that style character. Not Max Headroom perce. Had Ronnie Regan and the Iotolla

  • They were specifically based on Max Headroom, that was the whole point of them. Cafe 80s in the film was supposed to contain cliched elements of the 80s: Remember Part II wasn't made until 1989 so although they were able to use the 'Max' style Ayatollah and Reagan characters in the past tense, they were still recent enough to be relevant.

  • That is because the evil PepsiCo placed their products into Back to the Future, which is the one fault in it.

  • No.

  • This ad rules. I lo-lo-lo-love Max Headroom!

  • At 00:11 he says 'the beetches here are so hot' -- well, I can confirm that they are indeed.

  • I can't stand that "has sah" thing he does at the end... creeeeeepy

  • No 'Catch the Wave' was that slogan not used in Australia

  • I like how it shows the chick's backside when he says but-but-but... haha

  • She's hot alright... Problem is that the advert was 1987. Assuming she was at least 18 at the time, that'd make her 39 or 40 by now. Hopefully she isn't divorced with five kids and an alcholic stoner for a boyfriend... she'd be one damned fine 40-year-old.

Max is timeless however, I'm archiving-chiving it for m-m-my kids, for my kids..

Cheers and thanks for the laughs

  • @dieselpuppy74 : That was quite an in-depth analysis of the girls future, but i do understand where you are coming from in regards to her probably ending up knocked up with 5 kids to a drop kick boyfriend :) If not then yes, i definitely wouldn't mind looking her up if she has kept herself well.

  • @dieselpuppy74 43 now douchebag! kidding, epic post.

  • She sure is hot.

  • I think max headroom was that actor that played Rick Moranis's neighbor in Honey I shrunk the Kids?

    possibly...

  • Yep--that's him! Matt Frewer.

  • That's a lot of booby for a TV ad.

  • Well, at least she's not being rude and pointing... ;-)

  • heh, I wouldn't complain :)

  • That sounds like Jim Carey?????

  • Nah Max Headroom was at least a decade before Carey and was a British actor, some even claim Carey copied Headroom

  • i think you'll find max headroom was played by Matt Frewer born in washington d.c

  • Matt Frewer was indeed born in WA DC, but he was raised in Canada. He holds both US and Canadian citizenships. Per Wikipedia.

  • Its Matt frewer

  • thanks for shaRING

  • CLASSIC! I GREW UP IN THIS ERA! THANKS! 5 stars!!!
