  • 3 people can't triple tongue.

  • My band is currently playing i school. It sounds pretty o.k... at 1/3 the speed. lol. My band teacher wouldn't let me play the cornet parts, but I can play it better than them. Special conditions actually, but this is the best I have ever heard it play.

  • @DJRickinson in* and played* other then that your ego was the biggest issue in that comment

  • why are people so surprized that they memorized this Im 15 and I already memorized the first mvt of both the Haydn and Hummel concertos and I memorized the Arban Carnival of Venice its not that difficult to memorize its just difficult to unmemorize something that ou played wrong for the longest time and moemorize it correctly the next time.

  • I am from the coppell middle school north honor winds and we are playing this at tmea, all from memory. Btw im only 13

  • This is the single best performance of this song I've ever heard! From the tempo, to the intonation, and the balance, and the stylistic elements; they played it beautifully! They need to come to Louisville!!!

  • My dad just found the music for this piece at the library! I'm super excited to play it!!!

  • I played the first trumpet part in high school! Had to memorize it, too!

  • Someone PLEASE tell me how to tongue that fast and that clearly. I have to play first part on this. Message me if you know how.

  • @Stitches003 practice

  • @Stitches003 Double tongue.

  • @rainbowdragucorn Try triple-tounging, my friend.

  • Just played this tonight at my high school. 3rd solo is so much fun (:

  • Great quality recording on a flawless performance. THIS was what Anderson had in mind when he wrote it. Beautiful blend between the three of them. Even the director has a euphoric look on his face.

  • @mistyleafLUVSfoxpelt yeah except ur gonna SUCK compared to these guys.

  • im pretty sure tht germantown middle school is gonna play this 4 honor band this year, and i play 3rd on the soloists

i know 3RD but the other two people are 8th graders,so i think im doing pretty good

  • Im completely amazed; im playing it tonight but i know im doomed

  • I swear thats like quadruple tounging and beyond! wow

  • you just gota love trumpets with that sound who cant

  • My word... This is incredible.

  • i wish the trumpets in my band could do that!! they only make our band sound horrible. their tounging is amazing B-)

  • The double tonguing is amazing i wonder what kind of trumpet they're using

  • @massboy2010 they look like olds ambassadors

  • @MrKLDZJ No, they are all using Bach Stradivarius trumpets.

  • @dwerden Really? Sweet, I play a Stradivarius

  • @massboy2010 just a normal trumpet with insane tounging

  • such clean and precise double tonguing... amazing

  • My band sucks... Im the only 1 who can double tounge and play high notes

  • does anyone know where to find the music sheet for this? me and several juniors and seniors in the trumpet section have been searching, and we need to find this in time for the last game :D

  • I'm a sophomore trumpet player and my band director said when he heard this piece he thought of myself and two of the SENIOR trumpet players. I am still working on double tonguing.. Gah.

  • I have to play this at a concert for MIDDLE SCHOOL! nn way is that possible!

  • I attended a Christmas performance of this piece at Golden West College in 1991. Instead of three trumpeters playing, there were about a dozen. I was disappointed by that.

  • Now I feel like I really suck at trumpet.

  • @cortonimor Takes practice, cortonimor. And a person really does have to be a superior musician to get into a military band. Keep working at it, you can get good!

  • Me and my school choir (girls only) are singing this for our concert next week. We sing "dot daba da da dot daba dot" and stuff like that. We sing on that tempo too its really cool and we're all only juniors in high school.

  • Me and two friends played this in high school two of us can't double tongue and we played it at speed. We still got a 1st at state solo& ensemble.

  • they double tongue like they have two tongues...

  • @littleferdy lol i do too....

  • i'm playing this song, but for some reason, we play as a string orchestra

  • i'm playing this song, but for some reason, we play as a string orchestra

  • i play this with my band :) its soo fun XD

  • Leroy Anderson was a genius. Listen his many entertaining compositions.

But you need good musicians, too, and this band sounds just great. I love brass instruments, also good piano-playing, fine arrangements. It´s magic, when it really works, but you know that, of course.

  • @1959oldies According to Wikipedia, Leroy Anderson was fluent in nine languages.

  • whooa! amazing!

  • Bugler's Holiday doesn't get much better than this. Very crisp, very clean. Thanks for posting OP.

  • I wish those trumpets were in our band. We would be amazing with them.

  • I played the trumpet for years. I love this piece. I've never heard anyone play it at this fast of a tempo. Probably because we thought it couldn't be done!!! It looked like the director didn't want to go this fast but these th stallions knew that they were playing out in front of the director and took off ! Well the director kept the band with them but it still looked as if he would have like a little slower. BUT THEY PULLED IF OFF! FANTASTIC.These guys were very nimble, smooth and clean.

  • Man, these guys are good! Whenever I check out any piece by a US military band, I'm never disappointed. I don't know how they find the players they do, but they always seem top notch.

  • @carmium Simple, we go through some TOUGH auditions to get in... not every joe can get into the band. As a reed player, I also had to learn bugle calls... n oh boy! But ALL military bandsmen are put through some tough training and required to a standard... if we dont meet that standard of playing... we dont get in

  • Performance is unbelievably right on the money, as well as musically fulfilling. Just to clarify, not trying to be didactis BUT, to call an ensemble an orchestra, it has to have primarily a full string section, i.e. double bassses, celli, violas and violins. Wind, brass and percussion instruments are included in various numbers and types of instruments. An instrumental ensemble without strings, even if it's 150 pieces, is called a band.

  • @musicx89 ofcourse memorized! This is a classic piece for brass. The Ohio State band memorizes all of their music. If you ever see a Ohio State band performance, there is no sheet music.

  • Nice job. Clean & crisp & great dynamics. Thanks for posting.

  • i just played this with my band yesterday at my end of the year concert it went amazing! this song was a blast to play im a 2nd chair trombone player in the wind orchestra at flanagan high nd i just loved playing this song.

  • @TheAmigos4l Dude 1st chair Alto player in wind orchestra.

  • nothing sounds better than a well played trumpet, and I'm a horn player

  • ---must've been one hell of a holiday then eh?

  • @SchleimanUltima hahaha yeah

  • apparently youth orchestra is playing this not sure how this is gonna sound... lol

  • thats EXTREMELY impressive! wow! :) Im playing this song for band and i know how hard this song is when it comes to timing every note

  • they have this memorized ?!?!

  • @musicX89 They sure did. No teleprompters for the trumpet section!

  • @musicX89 It's not that hard to memorize.

  • @musicX89 it isn't as hard as you think, it's pretty easy actually

  • @musicX89 it isn't as hard as you think, it's pretty easy actually. it's the articulation that is hard

  • @musicX89 of course! i got this memorzed for solo & ensemble too! i know its not required to memorized but our band director told us n to memorized it or get an D hahaha me and my 2 friends worked our ass off even at home 12 midnite to 5am hahaah XD GOD I LOVE THIS SONG!!!! XD

  • @musicX89 WOW!!! Iamso impressed!

  • @musicX89 And it's not too much hard to get memorized. :)

  • @musicX89 Haven't you ever had to memorize a solo for an audition or competition? Same thing.

  • @musicX89 If you do a piece often enough, you'll memorize more of it than you think.

  • @musicX89 Its really not that hard to memorize a piece when you play it alot.

  • this is the only youtube video I've ever seen with no dislikes. It's not hard to see why

  • its amazing how crisp and precise their playing is

  • it looks to me like they sight read it.......

  • lol im playing this in my band.

  • Wonderfully clear and exceptionally good.. Well played gentlemen, well played indeed ... As a Brass band wife, I hear this tune quite often and it is a personal favourtie.. BUT the standard of play here is AMAZING and I have added this to my fav's, because it is SO WORTHY of all applause...

BRAVO GENTS , says a very happy lady in Wales UK :0)X

  • We're playing this song in my school Band. Sad part is, my school is getting major cuts. No more Band. ;(

  • This is a great performance of this marvelous piece; the trumpeters do not over-blow

which keeps the tuning and rhythm tight. A clear and precise conductor for a change

    too !! Congratulations.

  • Man they were tight. Played this piece a loooooong time ago when I was good. But never this good.

  • i wish i was half as good as them

  • I sometimes start to feel like I'm a pro at trumpet and get a little cocky, and watching this put me back in my place. Amazing!

  • @thegoalscorer126 if you're not cocky, you're not a real trumpetist :P still, this clip reminds how good you can become if you go down on your lady a bit more often.

  • Ob ich das jemals so gut kann.

  • Comment removed

  • perfect

  • my favorite thing to play on trumpet

  • I remember the eighth grade band playing this.... but not as well

  • Lol my high school played this but as a symphony xD I like it like this better. It's kinda hard playing B flat music on a Concert C instrument T.T

  • God bless America & the world in these difficult times. Music such as this most always stirs one's emotions & patriotism. Being a musician through school & college enabled me to be appreciative of GR8 talents~!

  • Not a difficult piece at all, but jeez...getting all those triple-tonguing parts in unison is probably a hassle. Beautiful done.

  • To those who would say "My high school played this- so what"

There's something here that you can't easily replicate! The SOUND of the trumpeters. The PRECISION and CLARITY of articulation. The INTONATION. Not just the players playing in tune with each other, but with the whole band. And may I add, a very fine band that plays well in tune throughout the ensemble. The INFLECTIONS that give the music MOTION. Think about it for a minute before you marginalize what these players have done.

  • @mpmcd81

Yeah, it's the difference between playing the piece (this band), and playing AT the piece (your HS and JrHS band).. There is no way on God's green earth that ANY HS band has ever played it as Leroy Anderson intended it to be played; that is as it is played here. Thanks to mpmcb81 for bringing you all back down to earth!

  • @mpmcd81 ummm not to burst your bubble or anything, but this is a orchestra, not a BAND lmao

  • @HoLyGaming2011 This is the U.S. Coast Guard Band, one of the finest wind bands anywhere. In the United States this will typically include piccolo, flute, soprano/alto/bass clarinet, alto/tenor/baritone saxophone, oboe, bassoon, contrabassoon, trumpet/cornet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, on occasion bass violin, and on some rarer occasions a cello section (air force DC bands typically seat four), and percussions. In the UK, the term band may apply to an all brass ensemble.

  • @HoLyGaming2011 Umm, not to burst YOUR bubble, it is not an orchestra. Notice there are no strings That's why they called it the U.S. Coast Guard Band!

  • blah blah blah my middle school band is playing this blah blah blah. not up to tempo like this. play it at 168. then tell me its easy.

  • i just learned this two days ago to play this sunday at my conert :D love this song

  • except, they are playing trumpets, not bugles?

  • Extremely good. A fun piece to play. However i have no clue how it is for trumpets. but from a trombonists point of view it is lots of fun. they did an amazing job. of course that it to be expected from the army's best. This does Leroy Anderson's piece much justice.

  • I hate people who are like "PSHAW my grade five band learned this in two days, NOT HARD." It discredits all the people who find this hard and just kills peoples' confidence.

  • what song is this?

  • My high school is playing this. My flute section struggles a bit with this song, idk about our trumpet section though. What makes this piece hard is the rhythm and counting

  • @Lonleykounichi

to help with that, you all probably are having trouble with the beginning eight measures. in that case, try to play it marching. it is easier cause you can distinguish the 1 notes from thenotes on beat 2

  • Lakota West's high school band had a trumet trio playing this...i was told by someone to look it up and it sounds just as good as this.

  • Our 6th grade and is playing this! But i play the clarinet

  • Takakaka, tacotacotacotaco, dekkadekkadekkadekka... whatever it is, it's fabulous! :)

And those woodwind accompanists aren't half bad either! ;)

  • Dear dwerden, Thank you so much for putting this on YouTube. This is by far the best rendition of this piece. Absolutely love it!

  • takataka

  • This is a very nice tight performance... nice and crisp, spot on cues... top marks, nicely done!

  • Just beautiful!!! Thanks for postingl.

  • amazing!

  • This was played by military musicians on holiday. It is based on the 4 notes used to play "Taps".

  • @mgerstung your kidding right? theres a b flat, (NOT concert) i dont recall having those in taps.

  • @mgerstung For clarification just because a part of the song is on open partials doesn't mean it's based on taps. Also, the notes at that octave are f bflat d and f, so in that regard you may as well draw comparison to every other song that starts out in bflat major.

Taps is played in honor of the men and women who have payed with their lives for our country, any soldier wouldn't play it jubilantly. The first brass instruments were rather limited with what notes they could play (no valves)

  • The middle school band director in our town just had his retirement party--did the Mr. Holland's Opus thing; had a bunch of his former students come and play a concert together--and a bunch of the trumpet players, including him, played this. It was amazing and great and gave me chills. :) this is excellent!

  • played this as a freshmen in high school =D

  • 0 dislikes.. nice

  • Buglers Holiday is a great piece and fun to play The hard part is keeping all the double tounging together in the three trumpet solo parts.

  • amazing double tonguing!

  • fantastic performance.... great tone, articulation and balance from the soloists. also love the long phrase lengths and the sense of one in a bar.... have you heard my version for 12 trumpets? ORICHALCUM 1

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • we played this is our spring concert just a few days ago!!! it sounded so awesome. whats really ironic tho is that my orchestra teacher says he was in the coast guard and he also plays the trumpet. :D

  • this is amazing those trumpets are great

  • Terrific double tonguing. I can play this piece also and it is just a definitive masterpiece. Bravo

  • My high school band is playing this! It's an incredible blast to play!! XD

  • Yes, clearest tonguing of all heard tonight--about ten. Excellent.

  • Our high-school band is playing this. I wish it sounded this good :o

  • My band is gonna play this peice on the Mayerson in Dallas Tx and the trumpets playing this are really good no joking they are almost like these guys except we are in junior high

  • I play the flute and im in 9th grade and i hate all of the dang runs.....they are so annoying

  • Have played this 3 outta my 4 years in high school and have done all the parts lol. Very fun piece to play, though the DT can get a bit tricky its actually not so hard to learn. Getting 3 players that can do it equally well is another matter ;P. Heres a tip, try humming/singing your part to yourself and double tongue, it gives essentially the same result for practice.

And its safer to practice while driving :Þ

  • sick! we are playing that next year for our concert, my two good friends and I are going to practice a good bit this summer and try to do it from memory next year. STOKED. perfect double tonguing BTW

  • Probably one of the best versions ever!

    Congratulations to our USCG Band.

    Fri

  • holy smokes you guys are trying it in middle school? wow we played this in high school... our 3 trumpets were GOOD though.... one went to the coast guard band, another to julliard, and the third... duno haha

  • @banilla16

lol, yea, we are playing this for the solo and ensamble next year for 1st division. i pretty much got it down, its really fun

  • I love this song. Im SIXTH grader trumpet and im playin this with the 2 best trumpets in my school. I play trumpet 2, but i love this song. I need to work on the fast tounging l0l,

  • the bass part is fun

  • omg we have to play this in band and our 3 trumpets are not doing that well lol

  • So well done. I think this is the best version on YouTube right now.

  • Excellent. from start to finish. I can;t imagine any trio of trumpeters surpassing this. Semper Peratus.

  • holy crap, im learning this in band

    IM SCREWED

    (1st trumpet D:)

  • @mogglewazhere It's actually pretty easy, I learned 1st part in one week. And you don't have to play it this fast.

  • what do u mean easy? we just got this in band and its hella fucking hard for our 1st 2nd and 3rd trumpeters but hella easy for the rest of the band (middle school advanced band)

  • @Tobi324 IT IS EASY!!!! All you really need to know is how to double tongue and really, you'll be fine. The key signatures are basic, just Bb and Eb. I learned Buglers Holiday in 8th garde, now I'm in 10th grade and playing it for solo and ensemble. By the way, what part are YOU playing?

  • @marine882 few of the eighty something members in our band have had private lessons and most of us have only been playing for 3 years. only one person in our band can double tounge and she plays flute.

  • @marine882 i'm in tenth grade right now, planning on be the first part, it is easy, its just getting it together is the difficult part.

  • Take it slow on a metronome and just practice and repeat!!

  • Cleanest multiple tonguing i've ever heard. In my entire LIFE

  • heard al hirt play this one with a couple of the boston pops trumpeters, robert magilnicki and andre combs. song loses affect if not played fast and crisp in perfect harmony. blaring trumpets rule!

  • I just got this music today, and actually, the trumpet part stays a 2/4 the whole time, and the trumpeters simply accent on the off beat 2 rather than always on 1. More or less, it sounds 3/8-ish because it's written out syncopated.

  • @battosaix3

That's what I meant with "represented as 2/4-beat". If you just move the bars a little, and change the conducting sligthly, then you could play it as 3/8-beat.

  • @TheMovieCreator (small correction)

"move" should be replaced with the word "reajust".

  • unfortunately, a 3/8 beat implies an almost waltz like feel, which means your quarter note would be played in a completely different style. I understand what you're trying to say, but it would not work. Also, 3/8 would deviate from common march time, meaning that Anderson's message is lost a little bit.

  • Usually, but that's when everybody plays in 3/8. Here, it's only the solist's part that can be interpreted in 3/8, and it's only very short segments in the middle and towards the end of the piece. Since the rest of the band has to be interpreted in 2/4 all the way (except in the end). Since the rest of the band makes the rythm, the rythm is still 2/4.

If the parts were interpreted in 3/8, those parts would of course have to be conducted 1.5 times slower, but only for the ones with those parts.

  • I have to say this is just exelent. We play this piece in our concert band too (got it last tuesday), but we doesn't play it in sutch a "disciplined" way (at least not yet).

I personally like the parts where 2/4-beat (band) is mixed with 3/8-beat* (trio).

(*) Of course represented as 2/4-beat to match the conducting.

  • One word can describe this performance... Perfection!!! This is by far the best verson of bugler's holiday I've ever heard!! Now I feel ashamed to play it!!

  • one word

    PERFECT

  • I've listened to about ten versions of this on Youtube, and this is by far the finest example of double and triple tounging technique needed for this tune. And the "Coasties" played it to perfection! you can learn alot from just listening!

    Absolute perfection!

  • Bravo!

  • ya me and two of my friends are playing this for solo and ensemble and this is by far the most amazing version ive heard

  • Rafael is still the king, but I'm hella impressed!!!! This was done by GUARDIES?????

  • Absolutely PERFECT!

Mr Anderson would be VERY proud to hear his music played with such perfection!

  • My goodness....this is as good as it gets.I had no idea that the Coast Guard had a band, let alone such brilliant musicians.

  • truly amazing trumpeteers! this makes me feel horrible about my jr high band playing this song... but i have a goal to aim for (as im one middle harmony part)

  • Im playing this for my high school christmas concert and this made me feel terrible lol. This is by far the cleanest version ive ever heard. We are currently going 120 I believe.

  • thats the most clear double tonguing ive ever heard

  • @JMeredith12 Check out Rafael Mendez! If you think this is clear, you'll be amaized by Rafael.

  • @JMeredith12 that's called triple tonguing, son.

  • @UFCxThaProdigy Where do you hear triple tonguing? I hear this:

tah tah tah tah t-k-t-k tah tah tah tah tah tah

In fact the only triplets I hear in the whole piece are at 2:24, easily single tongued.

  • @laqerhill correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the point of the comment was one of humor.

  • i bet when you guys become older youll be able to do this

  • This is amazing! My band is now playing this song and our band is not even close to playing this song as fast and as smoothly as this band!
