  • I know this is a stupid question, do you really believe that automatic cars are nearing or even surpassing manual transmissions? I only drive manual, but I hear it's a dying breed.

  • @MK3504 Certainly. In the US it's rare for anyone to drive manual. And in Europe automatics are starting to become more and more prevalent. It's sad indeed, and I think people who drive manuals actually drive better. It requires you to learn how to drive before you can get on a 45+ mph road, unlike automatics.

  • @TheTacticalTiger I just assumed it was one of those kitten youtubers and they just got horribly lost. Poor lady, my videos have nothing to do with kittens...

  • plus, also in the past manuals could have 4 5 or even 6 gears better utilizing the power/torque of an engine, and automatics were typically 3 or 4 gears. not until the last...psshh..2 years or so did automatics start to see 5 gears. Mercedes-Benz now makes 8 speed automatics. one limiting factor in the past was the physical size of the sun gears. they simply were not able to make sun gears small enough and still handle the power 2-3 decades ago.

  • @thehossman1 Lexus and Chrysler also have 8 speeds now, 6+ seems common now, thankfully. Just need to get them on high torque motors now for a major gain in fuel economy.

  • @EngineeringExplained I Daimler-Benz owns Chrysler though so that 8 speed is more Mercedes than it is Chrysler. Then again so are the cars.

Even about 10 years ago TCI made a kit that replaced your trans computer in Gm 4L60E/80E programmed for full manual shift mode and included a column mounted paddle shifter, so poo-poo on your voo-woo

  • @thehossman1 then why did you say "psshh..2 years or so did automatics start to see 5 gears"?? And yes, Porsche did have them... mine is a Porsche gearbox.

  • the big gas saver with manuals is because the driver can shift when he or she wants. the auto may be set up to shift when say 1500 psi is reached. the auto trans pump may have to be up at 5000 rpm to reach that pressure, so the auto will shift at 5k (electronic trans are more complicated with a computer also controlling electric solenoids to control shift). a manual can be shifted at any time, so say the driver wants to shift sooner than later he can make all his shifts at say 4k revs.

  • so explain about manual valve bodies in automatics and (manual like) clutches in autos such as used in dirt track racing, or a torque convertor on a manual.

    good explanation of it all though, I just had to be a smart ass.

  • Which one requires more maintenance? You need to replace the clutch sometimes on standard transmissions... Since there is no clutch on AT and most of them have lifetime oil, does it mean that there is almost no maintenance needed at all ? Thanks

  • @villeneuves2 Actually, working with manual transmissions is typically easier than planetary gearboxes, so the cost is generally cheaper. Manual transmission used to last longer, although now a days it's more dependent on the company you're buying from than the transmission you choose. Replacing the clutch is a big cost if you're an aggressive driver, but automatics generally cost about $1000 extra or so initially over a manual.

  • @EngineeringExplained What is the origin of the higher cost? Is it because planetary gearboxes are harder to make, or is it because the hydraulics, torque convertor, clutches, and brakes are more expensive than the sychromeshes and clutch on a manual?

  • @tnphysics Automatic gearboxes are simply just more complicated. More precision involved, more pieces that have to be perfect. Fluid pumps, actuators. There's more research that has to go into it. Manual transmissions are far less complex, and can perform the same actions just as well.

  • Your description of the manual transmission forgot about the clutch, by disengaging the engine you can shift into a forward gear while moving backward. The clash won't happen since there is minimal resistance to the gear change.

  • @joeslimon Correct; with the use of synchronizers the moving collar can equate the speed of the non-moving forward gear. Many times, reverse has no synchromesh, so the speeds of the rotating collar and the reverse gear need to be equal (typically not moving).
