To me, an electric cello sounds just exactly like an electric guitar! Oh well,they're both string instruments.

To me, the cello lacks the sharp, piercing highs of the electric guitar; the overall sound to me is thicker, darker (probably because of the lack of metal frets) and more slurred. Also seems to have less note clarity.

Plus, it's completely incapable re-creating the heavy palm-muted riffs guitars can... No pinch harmonics either. :(

Truly, however, this guy's playing is impressive and probably harder to learn than guitar.

@TheGatheringStorms-I wouldn't hold the electric cello incapable of anything an electric guitar can do. Obtaining clarity of notes when using distortion is rather difficult, but the same could be said for guitar. The electric cello itself just needs some refining to make using rock techniques easier. 'Lectric cello is pretty tough though; I'm not nearly as good as Cellonator.

I didn't say it was incapable if anything an electric guitar could do, I just said it was different tonally. The fact that it has no metal frets and thicker strings will always result in a darker, thicker sound. It's not a bad thing... just different.

I did say, however, that the cello is incapable of palm-muting techniques and pinch harmonics. Maybe you've found a way, but from what I've seen, unless you drop the bow put your hand on those strings it's not happening.

It is fairly common in my experience for electric cellists to play without bow. I probably do about 1/3 to 1/2 of my playing without bow in hand.

I have never tried doing pinch harmonics as they are done on guitar, however it is possible to produce a similar effect when bowing so that the fundamental harmonic is not heard, but its overtones are. On bowed instruments there is also the little known technique of subharmonics, playing below the fundamental.

I think you'll agree, however, that my initial point is still correct. A guitar is not the same instrument as a cello. Neither one is a replacement for the other. They will always sound a little different, and will always be played a little differently.

Different is good. That's why we have both.

I didn't realize it was common for a cellist to play without a bow... though, come to think of it, I have seen it before. Music is awesome.

Basically, it's fretless, and for the most part, bowed. Of course, if it was to be played with a pick, then it would become a guitar, and then there's no point, but there are ways round harmonics etc. without using a pick.

cellonators is electric by the way but i rent mine for about $50 a month and it's top of the range before you get 'artisan handmades' i would warn you not to get a cheap one they are built by machines in the czech republic... :)
