Thanks to all who responded to my question. I'm trying to decide who is right:) If it's a bass guitar, that would explain why I love the sound so much (like the bass in Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Starting Something/Smooth Criminal). I saw the guy playing a bass guitar in "This Is It." I suppose the old five feet tall violin the Jazzmen use to use has been turned into a regular looking guitar. Some musicians are just awesome.

Supreb lyrics and voice of Eddie Kendricks. I've been trying to figure out what instrument is used at the beginning of this song. Is it a drum? Sounds like a "rub." Never could figure out what is being used. Help me?

@bluesgird: Bass guitar(played by the most notable James Jamerson) and a horn(I believe a trombone) double the intro line for the first two bars. At the end of the 2nd bar, a snare drum fill brings in the drums and there's some sort of string ensemble part that plays a response to the intro line twice before the vocals enter.

I love this song & I just recently heard Fergie's song, "Here I come", where she sampled this music. I loved it at first hearing. There's no other that compares to the fabulous Temptations. Blessings to all.
