  • It was the NAZIs that put Max Schmelling into all that trouble with Joe Louis, the racial insult was too much, and Joe was more than bent on proving himself as the better boxer, he would have killed Max, if that was what it took to prove himself, that's what racial bigotry brings about.

  • Hitler turned his back on him after this.

  • Joe Louis, and Max Schmeling became close friends, after boxing.

  • wow great quality

  • two great fighters who fought two memorable fights.each time i think the loser won the most public sympathy.lesson to max.. beating joe the first time seemed to light a fire in joe louis that previously was not there. jersey jo walcott learned the same lesson years later.

  • Schmelling actually paid for Lewis funeral when he died as Lewis ended up working a shit bouncer job. both great sportsman

  • Wow. In thes boxing times, the ref would have stopped the fight long time ago. He had his arms down and was getting tagged. I think the ref. Really hated zee germans. He was going to let Joe kill that boy. Max got mopped up. You should watch Rocky tagging away at Joe. Then again he was like one hundred seventy five years old or something.

  • Nah thats just the way the way it was back then.

If the man got up, he could continue. Just watch the beating Don Cockell took from Marciano about 10 years later

  • who wears short shorts

  • @lasowski one of the greatest heavywieghts of all time thts who

  • yes he is terrified, i don't know why he keeps getting on his feet so quickly only to take more pounding.

Body shot usually look relatively harmless to boxers but here they were clearly effective

  • Is it me or does max look terrified?

He's just hanging back pawing with his left

  • They say he had a lot on his mind, with the nazis holding his wife back in Germany. Not as a hostage but Max knew you could never tell with those sick, crazy bastards. Excuse my language.

This was Louis at his best, he said "nobody could have beat me that night". But he was fair, he also said "he won one, I won one, even steven". Now THAT is sportsmanship.

  • @speddyg This wasn't prime Louis but it was his greatest moment.

  • i think he got respect becaus of lewis was the greatest boxer at this time also he was Black so thats why schmeling Just dont wanted to lose so he was under pressure

  • schmelling went on to become a paratrooper with the German army during WW2.

  • I think this is the original radio commentary. So much betterbthan the "Fantastic Fights' commentary edited on later.

  • he talks like a gangster.

  • haha loving the high shorts :P

  • joe..the brown bomber..louis was a great fighter.
