Positively the greatest under 6ft player of all time. Only question is if Tiny Archibald is under the 6ft they used to list him as. But Calvin was 5'7' and I remember when he put 57 on somebody when he was a Houston Rocket.
Murph was clearly the NBA's version of guerilla warfare: If you're big and I'm small, that means I'm fast and you're slow. I'm hidden and you're exposed. I shoot in and out before you know what hit you. Size is only as big an obstacle as you allow it to be.
Worth mentioning he was one of the all time greatest college players ever, averaged 34 ppg at niagra, and 38.2 as a sophmore!! 40 years later he's still on of the to 10 college scorers of all time despite only playing 3 seasons. An inspiration to a short guys (like me) forever...
There's an argument to be made that Murphy is the BEST player under 6ft ever to play in the NBA. His advanced stats are better than Thomas, Archibald, Iverson. The player who is likely a bit better? Kevin Johnson. CP3 could blow those two away, but he's going to have to last.
He had a 40 inch vertical, could dunk with ease, though rarely did - his ability to get up was a key to his success, look at his height on his jumper, his release is like 9 feet off the ground - one of my all time favs, however his rep took a big hit during his trial (innocent, of course). What does he have, like 11 kids with 6 different women?? jebus...
@JPMartin5 Yep, his mom got him into that. Dudes were cracking on him about that until they saw him on the court. Having a baller for a mom can't hurt either.
I sure do miss Calvin Murphy been in the Broadcast for the Rockets. But I love listening to him in the Radio 97.5 FM Calvin Murphy show at 5 PM everyday here in Houston.
@Brookssee821 Well Iverson played shooting guard where his opponents were a lot bigger. Calvin Murphy was short, even by PG standards. Calvin Murphy, and Allen Iverson best offensive undersized players of their position. Both were very fast and I would say they were the speediest guards in history.
