This is a strategic placement of US troops within the region. You have 100k soldiers in bunkers in Iraq and 100k or so in afghansitan with carrier battle groups in the gulf by Iran.

@willyhog300 I was there. I was one of the cooks who deployed with 1-87. I did this deployment with them (Orgun and Shkin) and then 2 different deployments to Iraq. Baghdad and Kirkuk.
@liidan15 we didn't even have running water on this base. This was a very simple FOB. 350 dudes had to share 2 phones, 1 computer (with horrible internet that didn't work half the time), and a few showers under a water tank. Craziest time of my life, but I learned so much about life and appreciating what I have.
@liidan15 I talked to a guy stationed there in 06 and he said it was all built up like Khandahar. Little shops, phones, internet, American civilians working there, and all the other bullshit that comes with being stuck at the bigger bases when you're deployed. This is in Orgun or some people call it Orgun-e. Google it for more info.

@liidan15 FOB stands for Forward Operating Base. Chinooks and other vehicles would stop during missions at our base to fuel and grab something to eat if we had stuff for them. The infantry guys I was stationed ther with were running 24/7. Not a very built up place at the time either, because other units were pushing into Baghdad, Iraq. They got all the support. It was hard to get anything in Orgun.

@liidan15 there aren't "front lines" in either Iraq or Afghanistan the way people think of when you say war. you get mortared and make contact, pretty much where ever you're at. in the summer of '03 orgun and shkin were the most dangerous places to be deployed. then we pushed into baghdad and opened up that whole mess. i appreciate the cool questions. i like people to really know how the army works.

there are some rather stupid comments on here. reguardless of your postion for or against the war, one should realize we go where we are sent. when my orders came out, i dont recall it asking if i wanted to go or not. there isnt a box on there for check YES or NO..... you go where you are sent and do what you gotta do.

@blackwood11b no actually they didn't. By the time our big guns fired back and our QRF got to where the artillery was coming from, we found out they were set on timers and leaned against tree stumps to go off. That's how they do it most of the time.

@willyhog300 I was there. I was one of the cooks who deployed with 1-87. I did this deployment with them (Orgun and Shkin) and then 2 different deployments to Iraq. Baghdad and Kirkuk.

@liidan15 we didn't even have running water on this base. This was a very simple FOB. 350 dudes had to share 2 phones, 1 computer (with horrible internet that didn't work half the time), and a few showers under a water tank. Craziest time of my life, but I learned so much about life and appreciating what I have.

@liidan15 I talked to a guy stationed there in 06 and he said it was all built up like Khandahar. Little shops, phones, internet, American civilians working there, and all the other bullshit that comes with being stuck at the bigger bases when you're deployed. This is in Orgun or some people call it Orgun-e. Google it for more info.

@liidan15 FOB stands for Forward Operating Base. Chinooks and other vehicles would stop during missions at our base to fuel and grab something to eat if we had stuff for them. The infantry guys I was stationed ther with were running 24/7. Not a very built up place at the time either, because other units were pushing into Baghdad, Iraq. They got all the support. It was hard to get anything in Orgun.

@liidan15 there aren't "front lines" in either Iraq or Afghanistan the way people think of when you say war. you get mortared and make contact, pretty much where ever you're at. in the summer of '03 orgun and shkin were the most dangerous places to be deployed. then we pushed into baghdad and opened up that whole mess. i appreciate the cool questions. i like people to really know how the army works.
