Which is any kind of metal with Viking themes. For example Amon amarth is a viking metal band but they're melodic death metal. This band is a folk metal band with viking themes
@VonKickyourass Finns had their own religious beliefs before Christianity, they weren't the same as the Germanic Scandinavian people, though it was mostly the same deities with Finno-Ugric names.. It just bugs me when people lump the Scandinavians and Finns together since that just shows a lack of education. :)
@randomjesse Niinpä.Hyvä että suomalaistoveritkin tietää tästä.Nykyäänhän syötetää sellasta ruotsalaisten kirjoittamaa paskaa koulussa oppilaille historian tunneilla.Suomalaisilla on rikas kulttuuri.Tai ainakin oli...
@GreedAndSelfishness Why does Moonsorrow have a runestone on their album cover? Finnish people didn't erect runestones!
Why do the band-members wear a Mjolnir, a symbol of germanic neopaganism on their necks? Finnish people didn't worship the Germanic/Norse gods!
Conclusion: Moonsorrow are either ignorant of their own past or they are using those images and symbols because they think that they are more glorious than our own.
@dblk You do not understand the fact that the Germanic/Baltic/Finnish gods are part of the same cultural influence. Most schools in the west for example don't have updated books about the contact of the Finnic/Germanic people, but the accepted view now is that the Finns came into contact with the Germanic peoples about 2000 years ago, where the Finnish loan words from proto-Germanic like KunINGas come from. At that time none of the cultures had a written language.
@randomjesse Yes, and Finnish language also has loan words from Slavic languages and even Sanskrit. No doubt Ancient Finns had contact with Germanic people, such as the Swedes.
But what does all this have to do with Moonsorrow having a runestone on their album cover? Where are the Finnish runestones if they are of the same cultural influence?
@dblk The Swedes came up with the "glorious viking" past as part of the nationalistic awakening of Europe, they had to come up with a past as glorious warriors to justify A) their empire and b) the loss of this empire. The truth about Swedes, and Vikings in general, can be found from the Finnish name for Sweden, Ruotsi, which comes from the ancient word for "rowing raiders".
@dblk Before the Swedes came up with a heroic past for the Vikings, the word Viking didn't mean much more - they were rowing vikings who pillaged, raped and sold the population to slavery. This is one of the reasons why during the Viking age the Finns weren't able to inhabit the coastal regions, but the Scandinavian sagas tell of a time before the Viking age where the Finnish tribes were dominant and started Norway for example. 1600-> Swedes aimed at erasing any Finnish history.
@randomjesse Swedes didn't need to come up with a glorious viking past. It is glorious. I don't see how you can dispute the influence of people who colonized so much of the northern hemisphere.
"the Scandinavian sagas tell of a time before the Viking age where the Finnish tribes were dominant and started Norway for example"
This is a pretty fantastic claim you make. Which saga exactly is describing this? I'd like to read the story myself.
@dblk Ehm. Read history. The word Viking was nonexistent until the Swedes came up with the idea of glorious past as they lost their empire. It is documented, it is said by the Swedes themselves in recent studies.
@randomjesse Who cares what they are called. I'm not interested in word etymology. They made conquests to Iceland, Greenland, Russia, Canada, British Islands... And had colonies in all those places. If that's not a glorious past, I don't know what is.
I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve by slagging them off.
And all off that brave Viking Blood made Germans invading Denmark the shortest war in history, Norway made a such brave effort to stop the invasion...That I have no idea of what happened, other than that they got totally invaded.
And Sweden, du gamla, du fria, you land willing to betray your olderst ally and the only defence you ever had against the Russians.
Both had weak militaries and even if stronger couldn't have fought Germany alone as Britain and the allies were in no position to send any meaningful aid to them.
@HelsinkiXdrunkcore About Sweden...You may just as well ask why the Scandinavian countries didn't help Iceland when Britain invaded it. It's not a question of solidarity. It's a question of whether a country is allowed by the protagonists to remain neutral.
In Finnish Winter War in November 1939 Sweden declared itself not neutral, but ”non-belligerent”. This allowed the country to send volunteers and weapons to Finland.
@dblk When it comes to Norri, it's in Icelandic sagas, Fornjotr was a king who ruled Finnland and Kvenland(ostrobothnia in those days), Thorri, was a descendant of Fornjotr and Thorris son Norri traveled to the west and founded Norway. Haraldur hinn hárfagri was his descendant.
@Crosell There is much more to paganism than old time gods such as the Norse, Greeks, etc. Heard of Wiccans? Those are considered pagans. Anybody not a follower of the mainstream monotheist religions were labelled as pagans. Besides, christianity isn't a monotheist religion anyway, so technically even they are pagans. Remember, God said, "Let US create man in OUR image." Therefore he acknowledges and admits to the existence of at least some other god(s)
What?! You... oh fuck that was really retarded. Whan God says "Let US create man in OUR image" He doesn't refer there are other gods but refers to trinity of His being. It's okay if you're not christian but next time think twice before you leave such a comment.
Ok well by saying there is a trinity, 3 separate entities, whether they create a whole or not still says that there are 3, not 1, but why would I think twice when the Christian faith tends to be the most corrupt system on the planet?
They're not three separate entities. You can look at that as in three aspects of one being (just making it simple but not totally corrent).
I don't tell you to think of Christianity as an corrupted system, just don't write fake facts. Also, the original christian faith had nothing to do with corrupted system ;)
You can't really write fake facts about religions, because they're nothing but interpretations in a literal sense. Christianity didn't even really exist until long after Christ was dead anyway, and it has aspects of many other religions, a big one being Zoroastrianism.
If you can point me towards a serious religion that is nothing but factual in it's entirety, I would be greatly surprised. Even scientology has aspects that are still unexplained. As long as things remain unexplained and without hard evidence, how can they be anything but an interpretation of events, circumstantial or not?
Religion will never be explained, it will never be factual, it's all about mysticism of some kind. The point of religion is "to believe" not "to know".
Completley untrue... there ARE people who believe in the Norse gods strictly for fashion yes and they are retards, but you can't assume ALL Norse pagans are like that...
@Heavymetalgamer28 i generalized that. ofc not ONLY but to a very high degree. i just never met any true believer, only guys who are viking and pagan metal fanboys and all of a sudden they were believers in thor and odin, with rituals and all that stuff, you know what i mean
I've met plenty who are pagan/viking metal fans and are very very serious about their beliefs... I think if this music gets people in touch with their heritage, more power to them
@evilmind5 Some bands are of both those categories, like Korpiklaani, I think is an excellent example of such a band. But I would rather call their category "trash metal" since their lyrics is all about to drink in pure finnish manner (until your liver rots) he he ;)
@tpcjames111 beautifully said and so mismatched. Hail from Compton and the mean gangland streets of LA to the Vikings of snowy beautiful Norway. What complete opposites. ROFL.
