  • Joni wrote circle game way before this, Neil actually wrote Sugar Mountain after he heard Joni's Circle Game.

  • Joni introduces her new song she wrote about Neil Young, i think it was "circle game"

  • First few bars are the same chords as Roy Rogers by Elton John.

  • i Love this song. Peace

  • omigod i love this song and i've never heard this recording. oh I love this song. i love this song. i love singing this song. with the recording. while waiting for the bus in Manoa with no one at the bus stop to hear, no one but the birds and the wind. i love this song, more than money, more than men.But I cant pick a favorite. James, I have heard was who she ran from to LA. That THIS was his infamous junkie period. THEY were together. Guess so, now that this video is up.

  • Great stuff!! This has probably been addressed, but were these John Peel Sessions ever released in any form? Boy...I would love to hear an entire concert (or even just 5 or 6 songs) by these two greats. It's like stepping back in time. This is one of Joni's earliest masterpieces, IMHO.

  • "I'm ready when you are James"

    "I know."

    Aww, I love them!

  • My Female IDOL , and My Favorite Song That She Wrote . Thanks So Much for Posting XO XO

  • Did Joni or David Crosby write this?

  • @rainbowkeys711 -------Joni

  • @rainbowkeys711 Joni wrote this great song

  • Thanks so much for sharing this, and for leaving on her little story about Neil Young. Blissful Greatness!

  • BEST bootleg ever. Joni will forever have my heart. And yes, the next song is Circle Game. written for Neil Young after he wrote Sugar Mountain... woof!

  • @jennifermaloley Joni is talking about that she wrote the song "The Circle Game" for Neil Young. It's described on a nearby post

    of Sugar Mountain.

  • i will always love her.

  • For the love of God, what was the next song??? It cuts off right as she's getting ready to say what it is!

  • @jennifermaloley

I believe the song that is played after this one is "The Circle Game"

  • This really pulls back the curtain on the process of the music business..

You really have to love Joni's outlook and inlook...

  • I can't help but think of this song when i see at how Joni's music has been ignored in recent years.

  • @skywryterz That is why she "went absent" for a while. Her last work was "Shine" @ 2007, and that was because she took a sebatical. The music industry was getting really bad. She was even quoted as calling it the "armpit" of the entertainment industry. There are many artists who were screwed over. It was quite commonplace, sad to say. We are fortunate for her extensive catalogue today.

  • The best song ever about how we as humans turn on backs and walk away from acknowledging unknown greatness..she admits she is guilty as well. such honesty..what is missing today..

  • omg... this realllllly brings back some memories... I loved this time of my life... and these two performers ... blocks of time never ending.... :)))

  • It always makes me smile to hear Joni sing schoo-wells, instead of schools, which wouldn't have worked at all. What a magnificent musician, composer and lyricist she is. Lovely to hear James accompanying her exquisite piano.

  • Margie - will always miss you playing this song.

  • Thanks for posting......wonderful.

  • And it was around this time (v early 70s) usually Sundays on BBC radio that I heard all the great blues players, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Ma Rainey & Co which is why I say bless Alexis Korner, he introduced a new generation of isolated Brits to this so significant music which we have loved and revered ever since.

  • Heard a BBC radio (UK) broadcast one Sunday evening early seventies and it was Joni Mitchell with James Taylor supporting. This could be a clip from that broadcast ... We use to get some 'real' music around 7pm on a Sunday .... Apart from John Peel that is ... and Alexis Korner, bless him.

  • Their collaborations were stunning. Beautiful. Thanks for posting this.

  • This was the first song I heard by Joni Mitchell. I was totally in awe... It's so beautiful.

  • What blessed music this is.....

  • THTAKING version of a classic Joni song, wish she had left thrown her cigs in the trash can. they ruined her beautiful voice

  • @chillmcphill do you know where i can find the version of them singing a case of you together? I don't think it's on youtube.

  • I used to have this bootleg but it was stolen at a party!

  • @eyedelon hate it when that happens :-/ (all my bruce cockburn boots = ditto )

  • @eyedelon A crime that should be punishable by death! Lol! You may be able to find on the internet or Ebay. Good luck!

  • Very interesting to hear them together. Nobody plays guitar like James and nobody plays piano like Joni. Thank you so much for posting.

  • The song Joni is leading into at the end is The Circle Game. She talks about Neil Young's "Sugar Mountain", but having heard the entire concert, I can tell you it is The Circle Game. She and Taylor also do a very nice version of California and, to close the concert, superb harmonies on You Can Close Your Eyes.

  • @zidwoq "The Circle Game" was written as a response to "Sugar Mountain," so it makes sense that she'd talk about Neil's song in her intro to hers.

  • @zidwoq "The Circle Game" was written as a response to "Sugar Mountain," so it makes sense that she'd talk about Neil's song in the intro.

  • god bless youtube for giving us access to this and all the other great music.

  • @chillmcphill

Hi. Where can I find Joni Mitchell and James Taylor doing "A Case of You", is it on YouTube? Can't find it.

    Sincerely, Patty Sipman

    plsipman@twcny.rr.com

  • That's Neil Young's "Sugar Mountain" she's leading into toward the end of the clip. Check it out; YouTube has plenty of samples of this tune, starting with Mitchell's Canadian kinsman doing an acoustic solo version.

  • Lovely song..two great talents...shame James's guitar is slightly out of tune with the piano...

  • They often played together before they became "BIG" to see them was a real treat

both so telented & they complimented each other so well.

  • beautiful. thank you very much for posting

  • Does anyone know what song she introduces at the end? Is it the Circle Game?

  • I cant help myself, when I hear this song memories of San Francisco circa 1970 with the smell of patchouli and grass filled the air while bubbles float by on a sunny day in a meadow in goldengate park

  • @captspock1 A small momentary taste of what awaits us in foreverland

  • Rare find. Nice post and good audio too. Thanks so much for this...

  • BTW what's the TT and cart? That is some seriously clean vinyl... Thanks again

  • @captspock1 what I would give for a time machine to know it for myself. I was born in 1990 and can't say I look forward to my next however many years

  • @julianonthestairs You never know what's around the bend. From the music of 1954 that was out on the airways, I never could have guessed that 1955 was going to blow everything away.

  • This is my all time favorite JM song and it's a treat to hear it performed with JT. Bravo.

  • These two were great together..wonder why they didn't stay together?

  • "Ready when you are James" to which he cheekily replied "I know"!!

    MattH1953

  • sounded more sheepish to me, like "I know you're ready but I'm not" thanks for posting this great track!

  • Great performance! I have the bootleg. The whole things great!
