omigod i love this song and i've never heard this recording. oh I love this song. i love this song. i love singing this song. with the recording. while waiting for the bus in Manoa with no one at the bus stop to hear, no one but the birds and the wind. i love this song, more than money, more than men.But I cant pick a favorite. James, I have heard was who she ran from to LA. That THIS was his infamous junkie period. THEY were together. Guess so, now that this video is up.
Great stuff!! This has probably been addressed, but were these John Peel Sessions ever released in any form? Boy...I would love to hear an entire concert (or even just 5 or 6 songs) by these two greats. It's like stepping back in time. This is one of Joni's earliest masterpieces, IMHO.
@rainbowkeys711 this song is part of "Ladies of the Canyon" entirely composed by Jony the Great and I'm writing this words holding the original vinyl record in my hands and feel so lucky.. Long Live Jony..!!!
BEST bootleg ever. Joni will forever have my heart. And yes, the next song is Circle Game. written for Neil Young after he wrote Sugar Mountain... woof!
Please sir, if you have the"case of you" rendition from this same appearance with her doing the Dulcimer and James Taylor the guitar. T'was just fantastic and YouTube had it, but it has since been removed. Would be grateful if you'd post it.
@skywryterz That is why she "went absent" for a while. Her last work was "Shine" @ 2007, and that was because she took a sebatical. The music industry was getting really bad. She was even quoted as calling it the "armpit" of the entertainment industry. There are many artists who were screwed over. It was quite commonplace, sad to say. We are fortunate for her extensive catalogue today.
The best song ever about how we as humans turn on backs and walk away from acknowledging unknown greatness..she admits she is guilty as well. such honesty..what is missing today..
It always makes me smile to hear Joni sing schoo-wells, instead of schools, which wouldn't have worked at all. What a magnificent musician, composer and lyricist she is. Lovely to hear James accompanying her exquisite piano.
And it was around this time (v early 70s) usually Sundays on BBC radio that I heard all the great blues players, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Ma Rainey & Co which is why I say bless Alexis Korner, he introduced a new generation of isolated Brits to this so significant music which we have loved and revered ever since.
Heard a BBC radio (UK) broadcast one Sunday evening early seventies and it was Joni Mitchell with James Taylor supporting. This could be a clip from that broadcast ... We use to get some 'real' music around 7pm on a Sunday .... Apart from John Peel that is ... and Alexis Korner, bless him.
The song Joni is leading into at the end is The Circle Game. She talks about Neil Young's "Sugar Mountain", but having heard the entire concert, I can tell you it is The Circle Game. She and Taylor also do a very nice version of California and, to close the concert, superb harmonies on You Can Close Your Eyes.
That's Neil Young's "Sugar Mountain" she's leading into toward the end of the clip. Check it out; YouTube has plenty of samples of this tune, starting with Mitchell's Canadian kinsman doing an acoustic solo version.
I cant help myself, when I hear this song memories of San Francisco circa 1970 with the smell of patchouli and grass filled the air while bubbles float by on a sunny day in a meadow in goldengate park
@julianonthestairs You never know what's around the bend. From the music of 1954 that was out on the airways, I never could have guessed that 1955 was going to blow everything away.
Joni wrote circle game way before this, Neil actually wrote Sugar Mountain after he heard Joni's Circle Game.

This really pulls back the curtain on the process of the music business..
You really have to love Joni's outlook and inlook...

@zidwoq "The Circle Game" was written as a response to "Sugar Mountain," so it makes sense that she'd talk about Neil's song in her intro to hers.
