I can't describe the insanity with which I anticipated the Matrix sequels. I thought they were gonna change everything. I was just super-hyped for them. Even though I enjoyed them they could never actually have stood up to my expectation, and on reflection they're pretty bad films. The Animatrix, on the other hand, holds up 100% as a work of art. the first part with the boy was my favorite one of the series of shorts, most of which I didn't really like. I remember when I first saw it, I just saw the last scene and it was so haunting that I decided to rent it. As I said I was disappointed with most of it. The animation was too choppy and cheap looking for some of the segments.

Nope, wind isn't viable. Differences in temperature/pressure between hot and cold is what fuels wind power. No sun energy = no shifting climates = no wind. Rotation of the planet is the second fuel to Wind, but its all mostly pressure differences. Its a safe bet that in the Animatrix world no hurricanes or tornadoes exist.

This is really neat, I do admit, although sort of a shame to me the artist/creator here couldn't find a good way to incorporate all of the animatrix clips into this vid. what is the animation style called that is used in the animatrix? its the same in "kill bill" and "gothem knight" and its not standard anime. its darker... with more distortion in the figures, gives it a creepy tone.

The style, for the most part, is traditional frame by frame enhanced through CGI. While that's the animation style, it isn't what gives it that dark look. That comes from the drawing styles used. I would suggest looking up hand drawn art styles for comics and manga. Some artists put tutorials online of their drawing styles, so searching for those may help as well.

whats the drawing style? i did some research and all i got was "rough line" drawing.

But all the distortion in the faces and the fluid, rather than crisp, movement makes the whole thing really creepy. especially in kill bill. I LOVE IT!

I'm not too sure which way the animators did do it, but I have a couple ideas of how they may have approached it. First would be the traditional frame by frame. Frame by frame can create very fluid animation if the inbetween frames come very close to looking like the key frames or neighboring inbetween frames. The more frames drawn like this, the smoother the animation. However, it needs to synch with the animation speed. Too little and it's choppy, too much and it's slow.

As for the second animation approach, it would be CGI editing. CGI editing can improve a hand drawn image alot and save time by simply altering the image. However, CGI may only have been used for stuff like camera effects (zooming in, bluring). The problem with CGI is that if it's used too much, the movement will become distorted and the detail will be ruined. I doubt the distortions were done through CGI simply because doing so will greatly reduce the animation quality.

As for the drawing distortions, I'm not sure what the style is called. I've only mentioned looking up drawing tutorials and such because usually the style is mentioned. For all I know, it could just be the artists getting inspiration from another animators' works. Face distortions can be done in alot of different ways and so many animators have their own methods that some styles aren't categorized.

I'm not too sure on what methods they may have used.

The Animatrix is a compilation of 8 different stories each using different styles of animation. The stories vary greatly. Some of the stories tie directly into the movies with explanations and histories but most are random stories of unique characters throughout the Matrix universe.

The girl at 2:00 is Yoko. She's a unique character in the segment titled "Beyond". It's about ordinary people in the matrix finding a house full of glitches.
