Please don't hate, but I actually prefer Mumford to the Avetts. But lately I've been listening to Laura Marling and find her to be my favorite. Now I'm trying to expand my tastes and enjoy the Avett brothers as well as other folk artists. Is there some angle I should approach these guys from? Like a specific video I should watch? I can't seem to understand the appeal. Is it just me?

Go to a live show and you'll be blown away! I went to see them in Pittsburgh and I hadn't really listened to them too much in the past. However, after that show I've been listening to them ever since. I think they are a real true to heart band that plays from the heart and soul. I like Mumford too but comparing them to the Avetts is like comparing a cup of juice to a glass of alcohol. One will still quench your thirst but the other will give you a complete experience!

@safarichick101 think of...i mean. Mumford and Sons i feel definitely appeals to more of the masses. Basically, listen to the few avett brothers songs you like, really like, a decent amount, and then branch out some. listen to Murder in the City, The Greatest Sum, Swept Away (sentimental version), Will You Return?, Die Die Die, and Backwards with Time. You just have to realize how...free they are. You'll realize, over time, how much each song and lyrics means.

It comes from the Latin "degenerare", fall from ancestral quality.
