I live just north of Milwaukee, WI. I was monitoring this online, and when I found out Chicago was out of the running, I was the happiest man on Planet Earth. There is no way in hell Chicago could have pulled it off. They don't have the infrastructure and it would cost American taxpayers too much money in the long run. When I watched this live I let out the biggest laugh ever. Someone who spends a lot of time in Chicago, I was happy we did not get the bid, but a first round elimination was just too funny.
Did Chicago really want the Olympic Games?? The 2010 Vancouver games are actually still going on, (the para-olympics) but to outside Vancouver the Olympics are like dead and forgotten until the next 16 days in 2012 come around. The only plus for Chicago is actually during the 16 days of the Games. Otherwise the Olympics are like a bad Marriage!, The Wedding and Honeymoon are great but then the suffering and derpression sets in!
What gets me about Chicagoans is that they just refuse to accept that they are just as "fly over" as the rest of the midwest. The only people who buy into some sort of "world class cosmopolitanism" are Chicagoans themselves. The reality is it is NY's and LA's world and the rest of us follow in their wake. Really, Chicago is barely in the second tier anymore as most major cities still continue to grow while Chicago contracts.
What gets to me about New Yorkers and Southern Californians is their belief that nothing exists outside of their metropolitan areas and vacation destinations.
Remember, LA is just a smog riddled tinderbox that is filled with too many people.

America is a melting pot of cultures, religions, ideals, and languages. The idea that it has no culture because it doesn't have one dominating homogenous culture is ridiculous. America's a great country, with all the good and bad ideas from around the world. It certainly has plenty of culture, but a lot of people are extremely intolerant and can't stand that ideas they don't agree with are represented in the USA.
Chicago really had nothing to offer. Rio is much more exotic and tourist friendly. I mean all Chicago offers is apes and if the internationals wanted to see them they have their own zoos for that.

My mother, who already passed, lived her entire life in Rio and have never been mugged, and I know other people like here.
