the best of our lifetime is definitely not our current president but it's irrelevant...why do you guys turn a great video and song into a political discussion?
@dleechristy I hope you are not talking about odumbo! The worst preside-ent in the history of the United States! Even black folks here are sick of him! Oh, and Roosevelt? Today, he would be a Republican since sometime in the 50's or 60's the sides swapped. Current day democrats are losers!
Came across the audio version of the song some time ago and have played it loads of times but seeing the performance of Natalie and Michael on You Tube has enhanced this and made it one of my favourites.
@healingypsynurse ... heya ! if you look on youtube.com, type in "To Sir With Love Natalie" (without the quotes, of course) and it'll come up. i listen to this song a few times a week and have for a few years.
@tracyq144 ya ive been looking for that video too and haven't found it. I just remember her wearing red and michael stipe in his hat and they performed that song with a lot of energy and it was really good. I saw it up on youtube like a month ago but now it's missing.
I remember watching this live on TV. Natalie is so stunning, wow. Red is such a beautiful color on her. I always loved this song from the movie and when Natalie and Michael covered it, it was a dream!
nothing better than this, pure energy, good feeling, thanks, lulu, mike, maniacs, natalie,i keep coming back to this for a good feeling, when sad, much love ,dave.
In case anyone is interested, this is from one of the Clinton Inauguration Balls in Jan. 1993. I remember it fondly, as it seemed the dawn of a new day after 12 years of Reagan/Bush.
@vikingivor I remember watching this the night it aired. How exciting it was, both to have a new President, and also a President whose musical tastes reflected my own (a first at that time). He used a Fleetwood Mac song as his campaign theme song, named his daughter after a Judy Collins song, and had people like Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant at his inauguration. (not to mention, he played a mean saxophone himself!) As someone who grool!ew up listening to rock and roll, that was very c
I love the song, and the performance, and I hate to be a spoilsport, but I think Michael Stipe was better when you couldn't tell what he was singing, and I think Merchant was better when she was singing around Peter Buck's lead guitar.
In a parallel universe, I'd like to think that Stipes and Merchant wed and produce an offspring of super gifted magical musicians that rule over the planet for eternity.
Obrigado a vcs!
I am reading Clinton's book. He didn't mention Natalie and the 10000 maniacs in his book. Where was he? One of the best voices God put on this planet ! Michael Stipe is excellent too! However, Natalie is the total package! Natalie's new CD is fantastic!
Isn't this from the Clinton inaugural ball? I remember Chelsea requesting 10,000 Maniacs play, and this was their song to Bill Clinton. I taped the whole broadcast but haven't watched it in years.
This brings me right back to the MTV Inaugural Ball in 1993. The two of them together was magic and there was so much excitement about the direction of the country under Clinton. This song is on a 10,000 Maniacs CD "Few and Far Between" but there is nothing like seeing this on here. Love it!
Pretty cheesy in parts, but I think Natalie does this song real justice. I remember hearing a version of this by them on the radio a good bit as a teenager, so I'll always like their rendition because it introduced me to this great song.
That's what I call a wonderful duet! Two talented and sensitive musicians singing beautifully this delicated song. Oh, and they dance together for a brief moment! (sniff, sniff)
Agreed, wow! this actually made me tear up a bit lol. And I'm a 48 yr. old dude haha.. Just listen to that crowd when Mike comes out! I love the classic Lulu song in a higher key but this is really special. Both Michael and Natalie are 2 of those rare singers that when you hear them you instantly know who it is.
She always sings this song in the key of "A", as does Lulu. She moved it down to "F" to accomodate Stipe, unselfishly, for the sake of this great performance.
I respect your opinion. I would like to take this opportunity to correct myself, because this has been bothering me. I believe that the correct key notations are "G" for this version and "B" for the original.
@charlesgs I beg to differ. The actual key signature may well be G Maj., but the first chord is F, next is G and then Bb. The break is E minor and A minor back and forth followed by G, C and D. The chorus is G to F back and forth, then finishing up with C to D. F# is nowhere to be found.
@refugee1234567890 I know this is in key of F# and I can prove it. At .19 the guitarist at stage right is clearly playing the F# bar chord, not the F chord...proof positive. This song is played in standard tuning so I know the F# is accurate. All of the chords you mention need to be stepped up one semitone. Thus the chords of the song are: F#, Aflat, C and the break is Eflat Minor/BflatMinor, etc...
@charlesgs With all due respect, you've proved nothing. I cannot see clearly what he is playing and you don't know what his tuning is. In the few glimpses of the various musicians fingerboards, they appear to be playing what I said. All you have to do is get a properly tuned instrument, sit in front of the computer and play along. You will find that the chords which I have described sound perfect, and the chords you put forth don't. On a lighter note, Merry Christmas to you.
They did this for one of the Clinton inauguration balls. It was a big deal at the time since REM was one of the biggest bands in the world and they hadn't toured in a few years. Stipe rarely appeared in public and there were rumors he had AIDS. Now they're half the band they were then and they won't stop touring!
I went to school at Fredonia in the early 80's and the maniacs wouls play at BJ's pub-smaller than your living room...She would swirl around with her dress flying all about-what atrest- Natalie looks awesome
I have this on VHS...this was performed live at one of the Inaugural Balls for Bill Clinton...daughter Chelsea was a big Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs fan and their appearance was by request. A lovely cover with nice chemistry going on between Stipe and Merchant.
