@SnowGigi As far as the spoken language, Mandarin is hard, Cantonese is harder, and Vietnamese is harder than both of them! Cantonese was more fun to learn for me than Mandarin, but not nearly as practical.

@Lexicanoe Because it's usually thought of as implicit that Chinese people are highly intelligent, eager to explore the world and capable of many things especially learning English; Whereas white American people are usually limited to only one language, and are not interested in the rest of the world.
And also the percentage of foreigners who come to America with multiple language capabilities is much higher than the percentage of white people going to China attempting to embrace Chinese.

@rockmyvw: that's cause she's a pre-teen *surrounded* by another language. Pre-14 year-olds (ons or abouts) kids, for reasons of brain development, will pick up the "2nd" language and speak it "accent" free cause it has to do with the development stage of the brain of children.
It's very well known by science that a person learninng a "2nd" language BEFORE the age of (about) 14 year-old will universally speak the "2nd" language "unaccented".

@rockmyvw: what that means is if you're a parent in say France or Mexico and you want your child to speak fluent Hindi, you'd "immerse" the child in Hindi language classes from the age of around 6-7 till the age of around 12 or 13 and that child/person will speak unaccented Hindi for the rest of their lives.

@Lexicanoe Well additionally, English is the universal language, that's why China and Japan (not to mention MANY other countries) attempt to learn it/incorporate it in their education system, and so it's more common to see them speaking English as opposed to an American kid speaking Chinese.

I've done both and I could speak both languages fluently with no accents :D
In my opinion English is quite easy to learn; only took me 4 years to have my Language arts grade higher than native Canadian :P

Just to clarify this is my niece and she had only been in China for about a year and bit at the time this was taken . She was not born or raised there and had never spoken Chinese before that. So I think it pretty amazing, but yes I am biased.
