What's so striking is how Postgate emphasizes quietness. The scene where Ivor is alone on the bridge is almost meditational...a pity such an approach is basically now illegal in kids' TV - ALL TV, in fact.
This brings back so many memories of very happy times. First time in a very long time have I felt this emotional for times past. Many thanks for the post CharlieCharlie08
I'm reading Oliver Postgate's autobiography at the moment, and was fascinated to see this episode, which he describes making in the book. Apparently they got 125 (not a lot, even then) for each episode, and out of this had to pay for materials, the choir and the bassoonist.
These b&w episodes are available on the VHS video from the BBC - "IVOR THE ENGINE - The First Story" have a look on ebay its about 90mins long and also has an intro from Mr Postgate and some colour episodes
It's wonderful these have survived, given how many archives were lost over the years. Am I right in thinking this one was reworked or bits were reused for one of the colour stories?
This was the very first Ivor series. It was followed by two further b/w series made in the late 1950's. In the 1970's, the two longer b/w series were re-made in colour with modifications to the stories, but the colour series did not retell the content of this original series.
It would be nice to see the longer b/w series again, but I have never seen them available anywhere.

just finished watching a documentary about Oliver Postgate on BBC3, and got in the mood for some Ivor the Engine.
i grew up watching these in colour during the 70's and never saw any of these B+W ones.

Wow a Black and white version of Ivor. I used to watch the colour ones back in the 70's. I had no idea that they were a re-make...
... thanks for uploading!

Let me add my thanks to the list. It was wonderful to relive those memories.
"It must be a good life, in a quiet sort of way, being a railway engine... I'd change with him any day". Brilliant!
If you have any other gems, I'm sure we'd all love to see more.
Thanks for your contribution.

Charlie do you access to the other two 1950's series? Lost in this gentle world. I'll have coal then.
