  • What's so striking is how Postgate emphasizes quietness. The scene where Ivor is alone on the bridge is almost meditational...a pity such an approach is basically now illegal in kids' TV - ALL TV, in fact.

  • Fantastic ! Oliver Postgates autobiography "seeing things" is also an excellent read, thanks for posting brings back all the childhood memories..

  • This brings back so many memories of very happy times. First time in a very long time have I felt this emotional for times past. Many thanks for the post CharlieCharlie08

  • I'm reading Oliver Postgate's autobiography at the moment, and was fascinated to see this episode, which he describes making in the book. Apparently they got 125 (not a lot, even then) for each episode, and out of this had to pay for materials, the choir and the bassoonist.

  • That 200 gallons was a bit bloody quick! Love it all the same.

  • Fantastic, thank you

  • These b&w episodes are available on the VHS video from the BBC - "IVOR THE ENGINE - The First Story" have a look on ebay its about 90mins long and also has an intro from Mr Postgate and some colour episodes

  • Wow I had not seen these first 6 its amazing how jones shrunk and ivor developed

  • Wow, same cut-n-paste animation technic Terry Gilliam of Monty Python and the first South Parks used

  • just finished watching a documentary about Oliver Postgate on BBC3, and got in the mood for some Ivor the Engine.

i grew up watching these in colour during the 70's and never saw any of these B+W ones.

    great

  • Wow only just came across these older episodes, fantastic, shame they don't make cartoons like these anymore! :)

  • Wow a Black and white version of Ivor. I used to watch the colour ones back in the 70's. I had no idea that they were a re-make...

    ... thanks for uploading!

  • This episode was great!

  • What a pity they never released this episodes on DVD as well!

    It's absolutely fantastic, this stuff.

  • Let me add my thanks to the list. It was wonderful to relive those memories.

"It must be a good life, in a quiet sort of way, being a railway engine... I'd change with him any day". Brilliant!

If you have any other gems, I'm sure we'd all love to see more.

    Thanks for your contribution.

  • Charlie do you access to the other two 1950's series? Lost in this gentle world. I'll have coal then.

  • Sad to hear that Oliver Postgate has died. 50 years after this episode was made. A Great man.

  • the were made by oliver postgate and he sold the rights to smaillfilms and then he remade them

  • It's wonderful these have survived, given how many archives were lost over the years. Am I right in thinking this one was reworked or bits were reused for one of the colour stories?

  • This was the very first Ivor series. It was followed by two further b/w series made in the late 1950's. In the 1970's, the two longer b/w series were re-made in colour with modifications to the stories, but the colour series did not retell the content of this original series.

It would be nice to see the longer b/w series again, but I have never seen them available anywhere.

  • At first glance, Dai Station looks like he's not wearin' trousers!

  • It brought a little tear!

     Especialy the chapel bit!!

  • Wow! This is very excellent! Very, very excellent! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

  • Absolutely cracking stuff!!! Fantastic, I'd love to know how you came by these! Keep up the good work.

  • Brilliant video,

All children's shows should be this good.

  • This is the first tv show that I saw, or at least, the first worth remembering. Many, many thanks for posting it.

  • Really great!
